NEWSPAPER ARTICLE: (paper not identified, date was 9 Nov. 1923). "JAMES P. HERBERT, MILLTOWN'S NEW MAYOR, YOUNG IN YEARS, BUT HAS WIDE EXPERIENCE. MILLTOWN, Nov. 9,--James P. Herbert, the newly elected mayor of Milltown, comes from an old Republican family, whose principals were to follow the doctrines of the G.O.P. for the best interest of the people of the country. This doesn't mean that the Herbert family ignores a good man on the opposite party, but shows that they are staunch Republicans, yet always working for the interest of mankind. The borough's new chief executive, who will take office on January 1, is a man of great ambition. He is only thirty-six years of age and politically speaking, he has seen a veteran's life. Mr. Herbert was born at Dunham's Corner and later moved to what is known as Herbert's Corner, between here and South River. Nine years ago the newly-elected mayor moved to the borough and while new to some people at the time was considered practically a home boy as all seemed to know him. Mr. Herbert received his education in several places in East Brunswick. He went to Fresh Ponds school for a time, then to Dunham's Corner school and finished his grammar course at Helmetta, after which he took a course in the New Brunswick Business College, from which institute he was graduated. In his political life, he served on the election board in East Brunswick township for a number of years. Five years ago he was elected to the borough council here and two years ago was reelected to the office. His victory on last Tuesday keeps his slate clean, and he has yet to be defeated for a public office. The support given him last Tuesday by the people reveals the confidence they have in him. His experience in the council should be of great benefit to him in the discharge of his higher duties. He apparently will experience no opposition in his work as he will have a Republican council of four members out of six to back him and the two Democratic councilmen will no doubt give him their support. The elected chief executive is the local expressman and therefore will be in a position to see what Milltown needs. Never in the history of the borough have a people been stronger for a political candidate than for Mr. Herbert, which truly shows his popularity."





OBITUARY: from The Daily Home News, New Brunswick, NJ, April 11, 1962. "MEMORIAL OBITUARY. MILLTOWN. James P. Herbert, 75, former mayor of Milltown, who lived at 311 N. Main St., died Tuesday afternoon in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Janet H. Hopf, 31 Maplewood Ave., Newton, Mass., following a lingering illness. He went to live with his daughter last October when he became ill. Born March 19, 1887 in East Brunswick Township, he had lived here since 1913. His late wife, Ethel M. (nee Weller) Herbert, died Dec. 5, 1956. Mr. Herbert was a retired employee of the Anheuser-Busch Co. of Old Bridge. He served on the borough council from 1919-24 and as mayor, elected on the Republican ticket, from 1924 through 1925. The Cottage Avenue Firehouse was built while he was mayor. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Milltown and for many years an active member of the Milltown Fire Department. At the time of his death he was a member of the Milltown Firemen's Exempt Association. He was a member of Palestine Lodge 111, F and AM, New Brunswick. He is survived, besides his daughter, by a son, James Stewart Herbert of Arcadia, Calif; five grandchildren, five greatgrandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Sadie Conover of West Hartford, Conn., and Mrs. Blanche Kuhlthau of Milltown; six brothers, Frank C., Charles H., Russell B. and Daniel H., all of East Brunswick; Henry S. of South River and Milton L. of Brooklyn, NY. Funeral services will take place Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Crabiel Home for Funerals, 170 N. Main St., Milltown with the Rev. Herbert Sr., 94, the former manager of the Middlesex County Fair, who died Tuesday at his winter home in Cape Coral, Fla. Services will be 2 p.m. at the Selover Funeral Home, 555 Georges Road, North Brunswick, with the Rev. Glen C. Bachelder, pastor of the Georges Road Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Van Liew Cemetery, North Brunswick. Mr. Herbert, who also had been a farmer and township official, was a longtime manager of the Middlesex County Fair. He was involved with the fair from 1937 to 1980. His second wife, the late Helen Heyl Herbert, also was one of the fair's strongest supporters. Mr. Herbert was a lifelong resident of East Brunswick. He farmed and lived on Ryders Lane, retiring in 1961. Beginning in 1960, Mr. Herbert maintained the fairgrounds, cutting the grass, setting up water and power lines, and overseeing the maintenance of the grounds. He pressed for the purchase of the current property on Cranbury Road. When the fair moved, in 1965, from its old Grange hall grounds location on Dunhams Corner Road, the Herberts were honored by the fair association for "their untiring faith in Middlesex County and East Brunswick Township, and their leadership." He was a trustee and life member of the Middlesex County Fair Association. Mr. Herbert had been tax assessor of East Brunswick from 1920 to 1941. He also had served on the East Brunswick Board of Health and the East Brunswick Board of Education. For more than 50 years, he was a member of Union lodge No. 19 F & AM of North Brunswick. He was also a member of the East Brunswick Grange No. 151. E. Blanche Herbert Kuhlthau of Harrison Avenue died yesterday morning at her home. She was 87. She was born in East Brunswick, and was a Milltown resident most of her life. Mrs. Kuhlthau was employed by the Russell Playing Card Co. many years ago. She also worked for the Personal Products Co. during World War II. She was a lifetime member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Milltown, and was a member of its Women's Guild. Her husband, Russell William Kuhlthau, died in 1963. She was also predeceased by 11 brothers and sisters. Surviving are a daughter, Evelyn K. Junker of Milltown; a brother, Russell B. Herbert of East Brunswick; and two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bronson & Son Funeral Home, 152-156 N. Main St., with the Rev. Mervin S. Gerhart, pastor of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be at Van Liew Cemetery, North Brunswick. Hodapp. Anna married James Herbert Smith, son of Foreman Walton Smith and Evelyn Taylor Herbert. Anna Margaret Weller died on Mar 10, 1946 at South Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, at age 56. Anna was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, South Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.

      Sarah Van Cleave was born circa 1804 at Shelby County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of John H. Van Cleave and Margery Kerns. Sarah Van Cleave died in 1884 at Clay or Montgomery County, Indiana.
     She was also known as Sally Van Cleave.

      Ruth Van Cleave was born on Mar 2, 1802 at Shelby County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of John H. Van Cleave and Margery Kerns. Ruth Van Cleave was born on Mar 10, 1802 at Shelby County, Kentucky. Ruth married Gabriel Mitchell, son of Daniel Mitchell and Mary Overstreet, on Jan 4, 1821 at Shelby County, Kentucky. Ruth Van Cleave died circa 1846 at Brown Twp., Montgomery County, Indiana. She died on Jun 30, 1887 at age 85.
