“…Uncle Solomon had married my father’s sister several years before my father’s marriage - so long, indeed, that when I and my twin brother were born, we had several cousins in Uncle Solomon’s family, some of whom were in their teens. To further introduce my uncle a brief personal description and a few facts in his history will suffice.
I do not know his exact age, but think he probably was born about the 1785, perhaps a few years later. He was raised in Western Ohio, which was then frontier, and like many others raised on the frontier had little opportunity for aquiring an education, or if he had the opportunity, it was not improved for he could neither read or write. Yet he possessed a fund of native common sense that enabled him to sustain himself among his neighbors, many of whom were as illiterate as himself. In his own estimation he was a man of superior judgment and wisdom, and in my childhood’s estimate he was a very paragon of wisdom. … [T]he lectures on domestic economy and duties of parents to children, which my uncle sometimes gave my parents in my hearing, have something to do with my estimate of his great wisdom. He was a man of medium height, stoutly built and muscular, of florid complexion, and was physically considered a good speciman of pioneer manhood.
