"NEAL WINFIELD, 65-year-old former Ponca City resident, died Friday evening, June 24, 1988 in Enid where he was residing. Born Jan .20, 1923 in Billings, Mr. Winfield was raised by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Winfield and attended schools in Lamont.

He and Thelma Mae Walton were married Jan. 27, 1942 and made their first home in Enid. They later, came to Ponca City where he was employed by Conoco until his retirement. The family returned to Enid at that time.

Mr. Winfield was a past deacon of the Community Christian Church, past commander of the American Legion Post 14, commander of the Northwest Chapter of Ex-POW's in Enid, a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and West Division commander of the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, Thelma, of the Enid home; three daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Virginia) Cross and Mrs.Peggy (Ron) Newman, both of Enid, and Mrs. Mary (Terry) Page of Goltry; a son, Danny Winfield of Germany; two brothers, Cecil Landes of Ponca City and Don Landes of Lake Park, Fla., 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be 1p.m. Monday in the Community Christian Church here with Dr. Don Parsons, minister, officiating. Grave side rites will be conducted at 3:30 P.M. in Enid's Memorial Park Cemetery under direction of A.M. Trout Funeral Home.

Casket bearers will be Homer Heausel, Ralph Bobbit, Otis Hess, Oliver Wilson, Leo Hendricks and Ray Steiferman. Honorary bearers will be members of the American Legion, VFW, Ex-POW's and the DAV.

Mike Sokoll of the American Legion and Kenneth Bufton of the VFW will conduct military rites at the cemetery.

The family will be at 2028 Mary in Ponca City."

The funeral for Thelma Winfield, 80, will be 2 p.m. Monday atFirst Assembly of God Church. The Revs. Dan Barrick and Robert Florence will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by Anderson-Burris Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

She was born March 14, 1922, in Hennessey to Roscoe "Pete" and Daisy Driskell Walton, and died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at her home.

She was raised by foster parents, Jeff and Lula Craighead, at Mutual, and attended school at Richmond and Woodward.

She married Neal Winfield Jan. 27, 1942, at Enid. They made their home in the Enid and Ponca City area for many years. She was a homemaker and a waitress. They returned to Enid in 1985 . He died June 24, 1988, after 46 years [of marriage]*. She was a member of Junior Thrift Extension Club, American Legion Auxiliary, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Disabled American Veterans and Ex-POWS. She was a member of Community Christian Church in Ponca City and First Assembly of God in Enid.

Surviving are three children, Mary Page of Goltry, Danny Winfield of Midwest City, and Peggy Newman of Enid; two sisters, Jewell Smith of Illinois and Goldie Presley of Kansas; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Neal, one daughter [Virginia Cross]** and four brothers.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice Circle of Love, with the funeral home acting as custodian of the fund.

Adelene Nelson (1905-2007)

Adelene Nelson, longtime resident of Ponca City, died Thursday, June 28, 2007, at Shawn Manor. She was 101.

Adelene was born Dec. 22, 1905, in Dennison, Kan., the daughter of Frank and Flora Blaikie. On June 5, 1923, she married Glen M. Nelson in Bentonville, Ark., and they made their first home in Billings, Okla.

They raised their seven children on a farm north of Tonkawa where Adelene maintained a vegetable garden, canned the produce and prepared meals for the farm hands. After moving to Ponca City in August of 1942, Adelene used her excellent skills as a seamstress to make military uniforms during World War II at Mid-America, a wartime factory in Ponca City.

Adelene was a member of the First Christian Church. She continued to enjoy keeping flower and vegetable gardens and sewing. She was a fantastic cook and always invited visitors in for coffee and cake. Adelene was a friend to everyone. She had a smile for everyone and had a great sense of humor.

She is survived by one son, Eldon Nelson of Cedar Vale, Kan; two daughters, Evelyn Greer and Velma Poplin, both of Ponca City; 18 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren as well as three great-great-great-grandchildren. In addition, survivors include numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and best friend of nearly 70 years, Glen Nelson, on Dec. 30, 1991; three daughters, Jeannie Fredricks, Maxine Mathews, and Evon Green; one son, Ervin Nelson; two brothers; and four sisters.

A graveside service will be held Monday, July 2 at 1 p.m. at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery with her grandson, Bennie Mathews, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.

The family will be at 2805 Meadow Lane.

Daniel married Matilda Dey, daughter of William Perrine Dey and Hannah Marie Clarke, in 1857. Daniel McLean Voorhees died on Dec 23, 1908 at Hightstown, Mercer County, New Jersey, at age 75. Daniel was buried at Brainerd Cemetery, Cranbury, Middlesex County, New Jersey.
     

Daniel McLean Voorhees, the ninth child of Peter J. and Abigail Voorhees, was born April 19, 1833, and is still living (1906). Up to within a few years he has followed farming for an occupation. but about 1900 he retired from the labors incident to agriculture, and is now residing at Hightstown, Mercer county, New Jersey. His farm home was in Middlesex county. He is a director in the First National Bank of Cranbury. New Jersey. He is an exemplary member of the Presbyterian church, and politically is a Republican. He has been tax collector and as­sessor of Monroe township for nine years, and served six years with credit on the school board. In 1857 he married Matilda Ann Dey, born November 28, 1834, daughter of William P. and Hannah (Clark) Dey, of Mercer county, New Jersey. Her grandfather John Hight, was the founder of Hightstown, New Jersey. The chil- dren of Daniel McLean Voorhees and wife are as follows: George Edmund, born February 26, 1858, died January 5, 1865; Martha Dey, born February 29, 1860, died January 23, 1863; William Clark, born October 25, 1864; Harvey McLean, born February 14, 1866; Sarah Ellen, born January 6, 1869; Edmund Dey, born July 20, 1870; Eva May, born October 5, 1876, died July 20, 1878.

      Matilda Dey was born on Nov 28, 1834 at New Jersey. She was the daughter of William Perrine Dey and Hannah Marie Clarke. Matilda married Daniel McLean Voorhees, son of Peter James Voorhees and Abigail Bennet, in 1857. Matilda Dey died on Aug 23, 1912 at Hightstown, Mercer County, New Jersey, at age 77. Matilda was buried at Brainerd Cemetery, Cranbury, Middlesex County, New Jersey.

      James Henry Voorhees was born on Mar 29, 1835 at New Jersey. He was the son of Peter James Voorhees and Abigail Bennet. James Henry Voorhees died after 1863; mentioned in his mother's will.

      Lydia Voorhees was born on May 26, 1840 at New Jersey. She was the daughter of Peter James Voorhees and Abigail Bennet. Lydia Voorhees died on Oct 26, 1844 at age 4. Lydia was buried at Old Tennent Church Cemetery, Tennent, Monmouth County, New Jersey.

     Nathaniel married Elizabeth Gaston.

     Elizabeth married Nathaniel Kirby.

      Charles H. Voorhees was born on Nov 10, 1839 at Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois. He was the son of Peter Perry Voorhees and Mariah Kirby. Charles married Elizabeth Gaston, daughter of Joseph Gaston and Catherine Denise, on Oct 23, 1866 at Penfield, Monroe County, New York; no issue. Charles H. Voorhees died on Aug 13, 1917 at age 77. Charles was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois.

      Elizabeth Gaston was born on Oct 23, 1844 at Penfield, Monroe County, New York. She was the daughter of Joseph Gaston and Catherine Denise. Elizabeth married Charles H. Voorhees, son of Peter Perry Voorhees and Mariah Kirby, on Oct 23, 1866 at Penfield, Monroe County, New York; no issue.
     Elizabeth Gaston was also known as Margaret Elizabeth Gaston.

     Joseph married Catherine Denise on Dec 25, 1830 at Monmouth County, New Jersey.

      Catherine Denise was born on Sep 24, 1805 at Freehold, Monmouth County, New Jersey. Catherine married Joseph Gaston on Dec 25, 1830 at Monmouth County, New Jersey. Catherine Denise died on Jan 4, 1890 at Union Hill, Wayne County, New York, at age 84.

      John B. Voorhees was born on Mar 5, 1841 at Jersey County, Illinois. He was the son of Peter Perry Voorhees and Mariah Kirby. John married Sarah H. Updike on May 18, 1864. John B. Voorhees died on Oct 27, 1906 at age 65. John was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois.

      Sarah H. Updike was born on Feb 5, 1843 at New Jersey. Sarah married John B. Voorhees, son of Peter Perry Voorhees and Mariah Kirby, on May 18, 1864. Sarah H. Updike died on Aug 31, 1894 at age 51. Sarah was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois.

      Sarah Maria Voorhees was born on Jul 30, 1842 at Illinois. She was the daughter of Peter Perry Voorhees and Mariah Kirby. Sarah Maria Voorhees died on Jun 23, 1856 at age 13.

      Abigail Voorhees was born on Jul 30, 1843 at Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois. She was the daughter of Peter Perry Voorhees and Mariah Kirby. Abigail married Guy Asa Snell, son of Dr. Asa Snell and Emalin (Unknown), on May 27, 1863. Abigail Voorhees died on Jun 30, 1916 at age 72.
     In the census on Jul 7, 1860 Abigail Voorhees was named Abby Voorhees.
