Harold Webster Brainerd, member of the well known mercantile firm of Brainerd, Marshall & Miller, of Grafton, is one of the most progressive and influential men of Jersey County. He was born at Grafton, Ill., July 1, 1883. He attended the village schools until he was nineteen years old, having attended the Ann Harbor ( Mich), high school for two years. Going to St.Louis, Mo., he was in the employ of the Sumner Hardware Company, leaving this concern in the spring of 1903 to engage in business for himself, under the firm name of Amburg & Brainerd. This firm conducted a general merchandise establishment, and built up a large trade, the association continuing until it was served by the death of Mr. Amburg. His interest was then bought by J.S. Marshall and the firm of Brainerd & Marshall was formed. The style continued as above until July, 1915, when H. C. Miller bought an interest and it was changed to the present form of Brainerd, Marshall & Miller. The business has grown from one of $3,000 to $12,000, and the territory covered is a wide one, customers coming in from a long distance. The partners are all sound and experienced business men and their connections are such that they are able to offer a fine and varied stock at prices as low as is consistent with the quality of their goods.

On September 29, 1909, Mr. Brainerd, Mr. Brainerd was married to Miss Bertha Elizabeth Voorhees, a daughter of George R. Voorhees, born at Jerseyville. Mr. and Mrs. Brainerd have the following children: Stattira Lucile, who was born November 27, 1910; Webster Lee, who was born July 12, 1911;Virginia, who was born June 7, 1915, and Benner Voorhees, born December 3, 1917. He is a Republican and was the first city treasurer of Grafton. The Methodist Episcopal Church holds his membership. The record Mr. Brainerd has made is one worthy of emulation, and his success has come through close applications, strict integrity and natural ability.

HAROLD WEBSTER BRAINERD, JR. a resident of Holiday Island, Arkansas was born August 8, 1922 in Chautauqua, Illinois a son of Harold Webster. Sr. and Elizabeth (Voorhees) Brainerd. He departed this life Monday, November 27, 2000 in Fayetteville, Arkansas at the age of 78. Mr. Brainerd owned and operated Brainerd Chemical Company in Tulsa, Oklahoma for many years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Holiday Island and the Eureka Springs Masonic Lodge Basin Springs #386. On December 2, 1944, he was united in marriage with Mary Jo "Scotty" (Scott) Brainerd who survives him of the home. He is also survived by three sons, Stephen Scott Brainerd of Rowlett, Texas, Harold Webster Brainerd III of Tazewell, Virginia and Mathew Allen Brainerd of Tulsa, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren; one brother, Benner Brainerd of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; two sisters, Virginia Fairbanks of Springdale, Ohio and Statira Miller of Madison, Wisconsin; many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Webster Brainerd. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, November 30, 2000 at the First Presbyterian Church in Holiday Island with Rev. Bob Huston and Rev. John Kovalcik officiating. Interment will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 1, 2000 at the Redman Cemetery in DeQueen, Arkansas. Local arrangements were by Nelson Funeral Service.

A heavy blow has fallen on this community in the death early on Friday morning of William Russell Silvers. Mr. Silvers had been suffering from pneumonia, and had a terrible fight for days Doctors from hightstown, Cranbury, Princeton, two specialists from Philadelphia and two trained nurses being engaged in his case, but the end for him had come, although to his friends he was the much-needed man.
Mr. Silvers was the only son of the late William S. and Annie Silvers, and the nephew of the late John S. Silvers. He was thirty-two years old, and on June llth, 1912, he married Miss Christella Milne, daughter of the late Alexander Milne, of White Plains, N. Y., and Mrs. Jessie Milne, who now, resides in Cranbury, His wife and two children, Jack and Jeesie, survive him. He dearly loved his home and was a most devoted husband and father. Most of his life was spent in Cranbury, he having in his boyhood attended the town school, then Lawrenceville Preparatory school, and afterwards Princeton University from which he graduated in 1909. While there he was a member of the Princeton Glee Club, and was known as a fine tenor soloist.

After his graduation he engaged in business, and at the death of his uncle, John S. Silvers, he became the President of the J. S. Silvers and Bro. Company, of the American Mills, and has carried on the business in the most approved way.

Not withstanding this, he has given much attention to the affairs of the town. He was an active member of the Second Presbyterian Church, a member of the choir, solo work being prominent, a grand mover in all noncial(sp) matters, its treasurer and and general helper. He was a teacher in the Sunday school and leader of the singing. Very much interested in the Jr. Y.M.C.A., in fact anything for the moral uplift. As a member of the Appolo Lodge F. and A. M., he was most highly esteemed for his ability along all lines.

He was Vice President of the First National Bank of Cranbury, and an acknowledged leader in ??? public and private. As a mover in behalf of the Liberty Loans he was a great factor, and on the evening of the evening of the drive for the Fourth Liberty Loan he was so earnest and sang so inspiringly that it is with difficulty his friends realize that if it is his last appearance before them.
Summing it up we must leave him and ourselves with our maker. A good man has gone, and who shall take his place. The funeral will be on Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock.

      Elston Hunt Bergen 3rd was born on Feb 14, 1921 at Glen Ridge, Essex County, New Jersey. He was the son of Elston Hunt Bergen Jr. and Marjorie Flanagan. Elston married Nancy Jane Wigg, daughter of Elmer Elsworth Wigg and Edith Crane-Hedge. Elston Hunt Bergen 3rd died on Mar 29, 1991 at Farmington, Hartford County, Connecticut, at age 70.
     

ELSTON DIED Mar. 28, 1991, at the Univ. of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Conn. He was 70.

Born in Glenridge, NJ., he lived in West Hartford, Conn. before moving to Farmington five years ago. Bergey also had a summer residence in Holderness, N.H.

Elston graduated Blair Academy in Blairstown, NJ., and entered Princeton in 1939, graduating in 1943. During WWII he served in the European Theatre as a captain of Army Special Forces. His business career was devoted almost entirely to advertising. Bergey served as an account executive for K.S. Shenton and Co. and Wilson Haight & Welsh, both of Hartford.

While on campus, Elston belonged to Cloister. At the time of his death, he was a member of Farmington Country Club.

He is survived by his widow, the former Nancy Wigg; three sons, E. Hunt Bergen IV and his wife Jane, Richard E. Bergen and his wife Eileen, and Gordon C. Bergen; a daughter, Dr. Elizabeth J. Bergen; a brother, Eugene; four grandchildren; a niece and nephew. To all, we offer our most heartfelt condolences.
