EXETER, New Hampshire — Robert Smallwood Black, 92, of RiverWoods, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, in Exeter Hospital.

He was born Jan. 13, 1909, in Zanesville, Ohio, the son of Robert S. and Dollie (VanVoorhis) Black. He retired to Cape Neddick, Maine, in 1970 moving to Exeter in 1993.

He received his bachelor of arts degree from Dartmouth College and his master's degree from Columbia University.

He was a U.S. Naval Reserve veteran of World War II.

Mr. Black entered the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State in 1947 and was assigned to Washington, D.C., Egypt, Japan, Mexico, Indonesia, Canada and Thailand, serving until retiring in 1970. Before the war he had taught at the secondary school of the American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon, and for five years at the Friends School in Wilmington, Del.

The widower of Barbara (Bell) Black, his wife of 52 years who died in 1993, is survived by several cousins.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time and will be announced by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

A spiritual experience she told Sheila of was something that happened wen we were camping in Alberta after we had celebrated mom and dad's fiftieth wedding anniversary-- We had had a testimony meeting this one night and then om (Sadie) went to bed. During the night she woke up with a start and in her mind she heard these words--you really blew it. She asked blew what? and the thought
came to her that she had let her children know of her love for them but she had not let them know of the love she had for Jesus Christ and her testimony of him. Then she wondered what she could do about that and really felt the presence of the Savior than she had ever felt it before and all she could dowas cry. She said she wept for a long time and was feeling very upset that she had let this
opportunity go by.

The next day it was a bit windy and she decided to eat her breakfast in her motor home. As she went to go in she saw Cindy (Grandson Wayne's wife)and with no other thought than to ask her into the motor home to eat with her.They had no more got into the motor home and mom started talking about the gospel. After a while she told Cindy that was not what she had asked her in there for and
Cindy said that was great because if she hadn't told her about thechurch Cindy
was there to ask!

Soon after this experience the Seattle Temple was finished and someone approached Mom and Dad to see if they would like to go with a group of young adults to see the temple. They were only the second couple to go and as it happened when she called Wayne and Cindy to see if they could stay at their place Wayne said it was great that they were coming as Cindy was being baptized
that weekend. Dad and mom were able to be at Cindy's baptism and dad confirmed her. Mom was sure that whoever asked them if they wanted to go was really lead by the spirit as they would not have known of the baptism otherwise.

Another time that mom told me of when she came down for Karalee's wedding was when dad was in the hospital with bowel blockage. There was a fellow in Jim in the room with him. Everyone like Jim and when John and Dallas weregiving Dad a blessing mom asked Jim if he would like one too. He wanted one and Dallas was the mouthpiece and he wanted more than anything to tell Jim that hewould be ok and that he would not have to loose his feet and legs. But that was not to be and he simply blessed him that he may "be fine" His surgery went remarkably well and he did well after. Mom and dad continued to keep in contact with him and shortly they felt it was time to send the missionaries to Jim and his wife-- which they did and Jim whole heartedly accepted it and he and his wife were baptized and until his death Jim was very active.
