STELLA NEWMAN MOORE, 82, a life­long resident of the Toddville community, passed away at 8:14 P.M. Fri­day,Maxch 21 , 1980 in a Cedar Rap­ids hospital following a sudden illness. The daughter of Elmer G. and Della Moubry Oliphant, she was born July 5, 1897 north of Toddville. In 1914 she was married to Lloyd E. Newman who passed away in April of 1949. On January 1, 1960 at Toddville she was married to Charles H. Moore. Mrs. Moore was telephone operator for nineteen years and was member of the toddville Church of Christ, and a charter member of the Toddville American Legion Auxiliary. Surviving in addition to her husband, are two sons, Earl and Shannon Newman both of Toddville, eleven grandchildren; twenty great grand children; two great-great-dchildren, and one sister, Virgie J. Kurth of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by two sons Virgil and Max Newman.

Lloyd Everett Newman, son of Thomas B. and Emily Hoff Newman, born Jan. 16, 1892 near Toddville, passed away suddenly April 11, 1949 at the age of 57 years, 2 months, and 26 days. He was united in marriage to Stella Oliphant Aug. 5, 1914. Besides his widow he leaves to mourn his passing four sons, Virgil, Max, Earl and Shannon, and four grandchildren, all of Toddville; a brother, Oliver W. Newman of cedar Rapids; a host of relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, four sister, two brothers, and a grandson.

He was a life time resident of Linn County and through his years of failing health, his willingness to help others never ceased. He was an active honorary member of the Toddville American Legion.
Funeral services were conducted at the Church of Christ in Toddville Thursday, April 14, by Elder W. C. Wilson. Miss Beulah Wilson, Mrs. Harold Oliphant, Melvin McBurney and Calvin Wilson sang, "The Eastern Gates" and "No Night There.: Attending the casket were Darvis Newman, Artie Edaburn, Vernon Brockman, Harold Newman, Roy Edaburn and Carl Hoff. Burial was in the Dunkard Cemetery near Toddville.

     He resided at at 4737 Pleasant Ave. S., Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, on May 18, 1941. He began military service on Jul 26, 1941. He served as a Lt. Col. in the U. S. Army during WWII and Korea.

      Bessie Evaleth Stokes was born on Oct 10, 1904 at Hawkeye, Fayette County, Iowa. She was born on Oct 10, 1904 at Alpha, Fayette County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Charles Sherman Stokes and Fannie Rose Bowen. Bessie married Lloyd H. Flickner, son of Elias Henry Flickner and Lillian Blanche Oliphant, circa 1925. Dora Oliphant, daughter of Jeffie and Elmira Oliphant, was born January 15, 1878 at the Oliphant homestead near Center Point, and departed this life on February 12, 1947 at the age of 69 years and 28 days. She was united in marriage April 3, 1898 to Charles Ellis, and they became the parents of one son Clair Ellis. Mr. Ellis preceded his wife in death in 1934. Besides the son Mrs. Ellis is survivied by two brothers, Elmer Oliphant and Clement Oliphant; a sister, Mrs. Blache Flickinger, and two grandchildren Virginia and Don Ellis, all of Toddville. A sister Alice Joyce, also preceded her in death.

      Charles C. Ellis was born circa 1877 at Iowa. Charles married Dora Bell Oliphant, daughter of Thomas Jefferson Oliphant and Almira Marilla Hoglan, on Apr 3, 1898 at Iowa. Charles C. Ellis died in 1934. Charles was buried at Oliphant Cemetery, Linn County, Iowa.

Clement C. Oliphant, 66 of Urbana, a retired farmer, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, at 2:45 p. m. at his son's home near Center Point. He was born August 27, 1885 on the Oliphant homestead, where he had spent his entire life with the exception of the last four years when he lived in Urbana. He was the youngest of five children, the son of Thomas and Almyra Oliphant. He was married to May B. Walser, Sept. 5, 1906 at Center Point. To this union were born twin sons, one passing away at birth. Surviving besides his wife are a son Vern; a daughter-in-law, Bertha; one granddaughter, Verlene ; a brother, Elmer G. Oliphant all of Toddville; two uncles, Herman Hoglan of Center Point and Tilden Hoglan of Center Point; 12 nieces and nephews, besides a host of relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; a son Virgil; three sisters, Mrs. Alice Joyce, Mrs. Blanche Flickinger and Mrs. Dora Ellis.

      Maye B. Walser was born in Apr, 1885 at Linn County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Sylvester Walser and Elizabeth J. Mathes. Maye married Clement Cleveland Oliphant, son of Thomas Jefferson Oliphant and Almira Marilla Hoglan, on Sep 5, 1906 at Linn County, Iowa. Maye B. Walser died in 1956 at Iowa.

      Bertha E. Peterson was born on Mar 3, 1918. She was the daughter of James Peterson and Minnie Dronebarger. Bertha married Vern C. Oliphant, son of Clement Cleveland Oliphant and Maye B. Walser, on Jan 13, 1939. Bertha E. Peterson died on Feb 25, 2009 at age 90. Bertha was buried at Oliphant Cemetery, Linn County, Iowa.
     

CEDAR RAPIDS - Bertha Elizabeth Oliphant, 90, formerly of Toddville, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at St. Luke's Hospital, after a short illness. She had recently resided at Heritage Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Cedar Rapids. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 2, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by the Rev. Del Bear. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial: Oliphant Cemetery, rural Toddville.

Survivors include two daughters, Verlene (Joe) McCoy and Jane (Ken) Davis, all of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Troy (Michelle) Cronbaugh, Trena Cronbaugh, Kelli Davis, Kristie (Hal) Davis, Kendra (Derek) Heggebo; great-grandchildren, Tyresea, Caleb and Caitlyn, Kaisey and Kelsey, Zackary, Dylan, Karie, Jason and Kaitlin; and a brother, John Peterson of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vern, on June 4, 1997; a brother, Bobby Edward Peterson; and her sister-in-law, Helen Peterson.

Bertha was born the daughter of James and Minnie (Dronebarger) Peterson on March 3, 1918, in rural Marion. She married Vern Oliphant on Jan. 13, 1939, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She was a member of Green's Grove Church in Toddville. The couple made their home in rural Toddville farming. After Vern went to the nursing home, Bertha moved to Cedar Rapids. She received such enjoyment talking with and waving at all of her wonderful neighbors.

She will be greatly missed by those who knew her and by those who loved her.
