REPORT:

Dr. Holmes Wikoff is a graduate of the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania. He practiced his profession until the fall of 1870, when he determined to enter the naval service. In order to make himself more efficient, be attended an additional course of lectures at that institution. During this course he reached, on the 14th of Feb­ruary, 1871, the age of 26 years, beyond which age a regulation of the Navy Department declared him ineligible. In view of the fact that the session of lectures did not terminate until March of that year, a request was presented to the Secretary of the Navy to waive the regulation ap­plying to the case of Dr. Wikoff, which be did in December, 1870, in a letter addressed to ex-Governor Newell of New Jersey. Relying upon the assurance of the Secretary, Dr. Wikoff did not present himself be­fore the naval board of examiners. On the 3rd of March,1877,Congress passed a bill in conformity with the regulation, and Dr. Wikoff was debarred from applying for admission as assistant surgeon, although only three weeks beyond the legal age. He was afterward examined as acting assistant surgeon and was admitted to the Navy in that capa­city, having sustained a creditable examination. Since that time be bas been in active service, and is at present under orders to proceed to the East India station. These facts are certified to by the Secretary of the Navy. In vew of the circumstances of the case, the Committee on Naval Affairs recommend the passage of a bill authorizing the Presidentto appoint Dr. Wikoff to be an assistant surgeon in the Navy, sub ject to an examination for that position.

Dr. Harvey Earl Horel died on Jul 28, 1955 at Augusta, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin, at age 71.
     

DR. HARVEY E. HOREL

Funeral services for Dr. Harvey Earl Horel were conducted from teh Methodist Church Sunday, July 31, 1955 with the Rev. Jordan officiating, with Masonic rites. Burial was in the East Lawn Cemetery, Augusta.

Dr. Harvey Earl Horel, son of Martha and James Horel was born October 1, 1883 in Augusta and attended school in Augusta. After graduation from High School he attended the Chicago Veterinarian College of Chicago, Illinois.

After graduation, inthe year 1911 he started his pracie in Fall Creek, for a period of four years, at which time he moved back to Augusta, where he continued his practice until the time of his passing.
On June 27, 1906 he was united in marriage to Bessie Madge Paddock who receeded him in death March 26, 1949.

"Doc" as everyone knew him, was active in all organizations which would be beneficial to this community. He was a member of the County Board for the past 20 years. He served on the County Park Board Commission since 1937 and was also a member of the Salary and Insurance Committee. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 181 of Augusta, the Eau Claire Elks, Augusta Lions Club, Augusta Booster Club, the Eau Claire Lake Association, a member and one time president of the National Veterinarian Medical Association and Fire Chief for the City of Augusta for 25 years.

Dr. Horal [sic] has been in poor health for the past five years, due to a heart condition, and on July 3 suffered another attack and passed away at 8:55 that morning at the age of 71 years, nine months and 17 days.

On December 1, 1952 he was united in marriage to Alvina Henning who with his three sons, Jim and Dr. Jack Horel of Augusta and Ned of Washington, D.C. and seven grandchildren mourn his passing.

Kathryn Arvilla Bryan, 84, died on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, at Luther Hospital.

Kathryn was born in Marshfield to Ewald and Theobe (Dudenhoefer) Steinberg on Aug. 24, 1923. The family moved to Eau Claire during Kathryn's childhood and she remained a resident of Eau Claire. Kathryn married Bernard Bryan in Eau Claire.

She is survived by her daughter, Janice Hobart of Eau Claire; half sister, Evelyn Jungenberg of Rockford, Ill; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Jeanne Weiberg; son, Dennis Bryan; sister, Marie Duffy Wehrenberg; half sister, Helen (John) Lindrud; stepsister, Margaret Pfefferkorn; and half brother, Owen Sparley.

Graveside services will be held at Lakeview Cemetery on Friday, Jan. 4, 2008.

Smith Funeral Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.
