SAN ANGELO: Madelle Hale Polhemus, 85, of San Angelo passed away Thursday, May 5, 2005, in a local hospital. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7, in Fairmount Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Hedges officiating. A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepard with the Rev. Keith Adams officiating. The church is located at 3355 W. Beauregard Ave. The memorial service will be followed by supper in the Parish Hall.

Madelle was born Jan. 12, 1920, in Newport, Texas, to Barney and Alice Hale. She was an extraordinary woman full of life and adventure. She graduated in 1937 from Polytechnic High School in Fort Worth, continuing her education at the University of Texas in Austin, graduating in 1941. She completed Clinical Pastoral Education in 1979 at St. John?s Hospital in San Angelo and the School for Spiritual Directors at Our Lady of Guadalupe Benediction Monastery in Pecos, N.M., in 1995. She also attended five summer sessions at the Einsiedeln Conference in Switzerland, where the sessions were taught by teaching analysts from the C.G. Jung Institute, Kvenacht, Switzerland. The subject matter was theology, analytical psychology, mythology and fairy tales.

Madelle's special interests were psychology as it related to theology, cooking and traveling. She married the love of her life, Dr. J.G. Polhemus, D.D.S., on Dec. 25, 1941, in Wichita Falls, Texas, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 28, 1993. She was proud to be the wife of a Lieutenant in the Navy during World War II and a Major in the Air Force during the Korean War, and she remained devoted to her husband as he practiced dentistry in San Angelo for 47 years. Madelle and J.G. traveled for pleasure for many years.

Madelle worked at the beginning of World War II as a private secretary to the head of the legal division of the Office of Price Administration, Southwest Region of the U.S., in Dallas, Texas, having to do with rationings. She did this while her husband was in professional school and retired when he graduated and spent the rest of her life being wife and mother. Madelle considered herself the truly ?liberated woman. Life was good.

She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in San Angelo where she was very active in the Healing Ministry of the Order of St. Luke.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dr. John Glenn Polhemus Jr., D.D.S; brothers Edward Allen Hale, Chester Lee Hale, Barney Hazael Hale Jr. and Robert Preston Hale; and sister Anne Oleta Hale Massengale.

She is survived by her two sons, John Glenn Polhemus III and wife Mollie and Mark Christopher Polhemus and wife Jean, all of San Angelo; six grandchildren, Katherine Pilar Polhemus Henry, John Glenn Polhemus IV, Marshall Polhemus, Martha Virginia Polhemus, Taylor Anna Polhemus and Preston Sloan Polhemus; and five great-grandchildren, Martha Flores, Don Van Nguyen, Dan Van Nguyen, Boyd Henry and Kendyl Paige Henry.

Memorials may be sent to Good Shepherd Episcopal Church for the Mexico Mission Fund, 3355 W. Beauregard Ave., San Angelo, Texas, a ministry very dear to Madelle, or to a favorite charity.
