Long-time Cozad Businessman: Wayman E. May, age 90 (1919-2010)
Wayman Elwood May, 90, long-time Cozad, Nebraska, businessman, died suddenly Sunday, June 6th, 2010, in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Wayman was born on September 8th, 1919, in Cozad, to William Elwood and DeNora Grace Harris May. He lived all of his life in Cozad, with the exception of several years in college and WW II, until moving to Las Cruces two years ago to be cared for by his daughter, Virginia May.
Wayman declared his faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age, being baptized in the Platte River near Cozad. As a very young boy, he sang on stage at a Cozad crusade. Wayman was a 60 + year member of the First United Methodist Church in Cozad. His favorite hymn became "Amazing Grace" and he sang bass in the church choir for many years, as well as playing his coronet in the Cozad Municipal Band. He had a love of music, especially classical, Big Band, and marches, a love of life and a rich, quick sense of humor, using it to put people at ease, get through difficult times, and to make his family and friends laugh.
Wayman graduated from Cozad High School in 1937 and attended Denver University as a pre-law student, an active member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, enlisting in the Army Air Corps his senior year. He was stationed at Drew Field in Tampa, Florida, where he met the love of his life, Sara Elizabeth Thomas. Wayman married Sara before he was sent overseas to France as First Lieutenant, writing many letter letters home to his "love." He received the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service, and an award for "Outstanding Service to Radio Free Europe."
Their first child, Cheryln Jean was born while he was stationed in France, returning when she was 13 months old. They moved back to Cozad in 1946 after discharge to enter the insurance and real estate business with his father. Together, he and Sara reared four more children, Randy, Ginny, Billye Jo, and Robert, participating in many school, community, county, state, and church activities. He was supportive and active in his children's lives. He loved to travel and particularly enjoyed Sara's southern cooking and "eating out." His favorite places were the mountains of Colorado, North Carolina and New Mexico, Midway and Johnson lakes, his "coffee group," traveling to children's and grandchildren's homes and events, and any musical event. Wayman never knew a "stranger," as he would strike up a conversation with people of all ages wherever he was. Wayman was particularly fond of children, animals, and taking "drives!"
Wayman served on the Cozad School Board, the Cozad Industrial Development Corporation, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Dawson County Board of Realtors, Professional Insurance Agents, VFW, American Legion, Cozad Elks, Country Club, South Central Developmental Services, Child Development Center, Methodist Lay Leadership, local and district church councils, Sunday school teacher, Boy Scout Tri-Trails Council, and was one of the original founders and board directors of Camp Comeca. He was instrumental in purchasing then raising funds in order for the Hendee Hotel to remain, which is now included in the National Historic Registry. Wayman initiated the creation of Southview Manor in Cozad, with Dr. R.A. Sitorius, which is now Golden LivingCenter, in which he resided for several years. He so appreciated the loving care he has received and the friends he made in the care homes and assisted living facilities in which he and Sara resided in recent years.
In later years, he and Sara were leaders of the Cozad CROP Walk, as well made Thrift Shop deliveries to Kearney. He owned and worked at Western Real Estate and Insurance in Cozad with his son Randy, until his health declined at age 84. He also was part owner of Foothills Photo Lab with his son Robert in Longmont, Colorado, for many years. He was a devoted husband, father, grandpa, and uncle.
Wayman is survived by his five children who will miss him greatly, Cheryln Jean Wahlgren (Dale), North Platte, Nebraska, Thomas Randall May, Cozad, Virginia Louise (Ginny) May (Louie Skogen), Las Cruces, New Mexico, Billye Jo Brockmeier, Kearney, Nebraska and John Robert May, Longmont; nine grandchildren, Lorri Goode (Scott), Daniel Wahlgren (Sandra), Cici Jo Anderson, Robyn Huffman (Jeff), Amy Uehling (Boyd), Karrie Tiarks (John), Cara Cochran (David), Bret Brockmeier, and Zoe May; 16 great-grandchildren, Jordan, Andrew and Maggie Goode, Emmie, Quinn, and Julia Wahlgren, Will, Josie, Levi, and Cole Huffman, Braden and Max Tiarks, Alexsis, Caylee and Bryna Cochran, Maddox Uehling; a niece, May La Dean Palmer, Parker, Colorado, and special cousins, Norman Harris (Janice), York, Nebraska, Dr. Derald May (Betty), Phoenix, Arizona, Geraldine Buss (Dale), Deming, New Mexico, Betty Lou Palmer of Sacramento, California and numerous other nieces, nephews, and friends.

Sara Elizabeth Thomas May
Sara Elizabeth Thomas May, 93, was born in Clover, S.C., on Jan. 14, 1914, to Joseph Ernest and Mary Elizabeth Greene Thomas and died Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, in North Platte following surgery.
Sara declared her faith in Jesus Christ as her lord and savior in holy baptism at age 12 in the Southern Baptist Church, where her parents were active members. After graduating from Bethany High School near Clover, Sara moved to Aberdeen, N.C., living with her aunt and grandmother Thomas as she worked at her cousin''s telephone company as well as a hotel at the Southern Pines Golf Course. Other jobs included secretarial and bookkeeping for a doctor and for her uncle T.M. Thomas after she completed a two-year secretarial course in Aberdeen.
Sara moved to Tampa, Fla., to work for her cousin Paul Thomas at Drew Field Air Base, where she met and married her husband, Wayman Elwood May, on May 8, 1943. Following Wayman''s return from overseas duty in World War II, they moved to Cozad in 1946 where he entered business with his father. Together they nurtured and reared five children, worked at their real estate and insurance business and participated in their children''s school and community activities, being strong advocates of education.
Sara was a 60-plus-year member of the First United Methodist Church in Cozad, participating in various church circles, teaching Sunday school and vacation Bible school, and serving. She was a longtime VFW auxiliary member and a former Girl Scout leader. Sara was a devoted wife, partner, mother and grandmother. She was a caring and loving woman who enjoyed conversing with everyone, having an especially compassionate heart for the less fortunate. She also enjoyed singing, listening and dancing to music, playing several special songs on the piano, doing crossword puzzles, and reading in her many areas of interest. She had a very special talent in story-telling, reciting poems, and telling her children and grandchildren Bible stories and verses. In later years, she and Wayman chaired the Cozad CROP Walk and worked tirelessly at the thrift shop, making many deliveries to Kearney.
Sara had a very kind heart towards animals, helping the children nurse injured and orphaned animals. She was a superb Southern cook, she shared her abundance with all, gardening and canning for many years. Her fried chicken and gravy were enjoyed regularly around the family table. She remained a ?Southern belle up north? and was called a true ?lady? by many. She was loved by her family, always taking time with the grandchildren, and her ?special touch? will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Melvin, J.E., James and Max; and great grandbaby Connor Goode.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Wayman Elwood May of Cozad, and their five children Cheryln Jean (Dale) Wahlgren of North Platte, Thomas Randall (Randy) May of Cozad, Ginny Lou May (Louis Skogen) of Las Cruces, N.M., Billye Jo Brockmeier of Kearney, and Robert (Jennie) May of Keenesburg, Colo; and brother Floyd (Gladys) Thomas of Fort Mill, S.C; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Francis Thomas and Gladys Thomas, and a host of other close relatives and friends.
