Mrs. Russell (Bernice) Stoutenborough, 69, of in Decatur died at 8:27 a.m. Sunday in Decatur Memorial Hospital.

She was born in DeWitt County on June 8, 1899, a daughter of U. G. and Ida Thorpe Davis.

A resident of Decatur for 18 years, she was affiliated with the Presbyterian Church.

She married Russell C. Stoutenborough on Oct. 24, 1923 in Clinton, IL. He survives.

Besides her husband she leaves a son, Charles G. of Maroa, and a daughter, Mrs. Charles L. (Betty) Ritchie, of Springfield.


Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home, with burial in Maroa Cemetery. Calling time is after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

MAROA -- Barbara Charlene Stoutenborough, 78, Maroa, passed away Wednesday (Nov. 5, 2008) at Decatur Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Maroa United Methodist Church, with Bob Kaufman officiating. Interment will be at Maroa Cemetery, Maroa. Visitation will be at the church two hours prior to the service Saturday. Calvert Funeral Home, Maroa, is in charge of arrangements.

The family requests memorials to the Maroa United Methodist Church.

Barbara was born Nov. 9, 1929, the daughter of Thomas L. and Ruby McCoy Troy in Decatur. She married Charles G. Stoutenborough on Nov. 27, 1949. He preceded her in death on Sept. 24, 1983.

Surviving are her sons, Thomas C. Stoutenborough and his sweetheart, Toni Hesse, Mattoon; and James R. (Lisa) Stoutenborough, DeLand; grandsons, Drew J. (Lisa) Stoutenborough, Cuba City, Wis; Kyle A. Stoutenborough, Greenville, Iowa; Troy G. Stoutenborough, Maroa; Travis R. Stoutenborough, West Lafayette, Ind; and Tyler J. Stoutenborough and friend Brittney Cope, Maroa; step-grandchildren, Allison Riggs and Ian Riggs, DeLand; and one great-granddaughter, Kaylee Jo Stoutenborough, Maroa, as well as another great-grandchild on the way. She is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck; son, Richard L. Stoutenborough; and her parents.

Barb and Chuck raised their three sons and farmed west of Maroa until his death.

Nothing was dearer to her than her children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter, and ?Grams? was always in attendance at their many activities.

Barbara was a former member of the Illinois Angus Auxiliary and was currently an active member of the Maroa United Methodist Church.

Walter Schenck Stoutenborough, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Stoutenborough, died at the family residence at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon following an illness of less than 24 hours. He was taken ill at school during the afternoon Monday with stomach trouble and his condition was serious during the night. He had gone to school only six days starting in with the school year September 5.

Walter Schenck was born October 25, 1921, being the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Stoutenborough. He leaves one half sister, Dorris, and one half brother, Charles, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Schenck Stoutenborough.

Dorothy (Dottie) was born November 29, 1925, in Greensburg, KY, the daughter of Worley and Eula (Loveall) Arnette. She married William Robert Stoutenborough on April 9, 1949. She was affiliated with Grace United Methodist Church. Dottie was a devoted mother and wife to her family. She loved to travel with her husband in their motor home and spent most winters in Florida. Dottie moved as a child with her family to Towanda, IL where she graduated from Towanda High School. She attended college at Illinois Wesleyan University where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. There she made many life-long friends. In her senior year she transferred to Illinois State University to obtain her teaching certificate. She taught for many years, primarily in Physical Education. Dottie loved to read, play bridge, golf and was a tremendous homemaker and mother. She was women's club champion at the Clinton Country Club. She was a member of a Decatur Study Club for seventeen years, Books Between Bites at the Decatur Public Library, and a bridge club member of a special group in Maroa, IL for many years. Dottie and her family lived in Maroa, IL until her husband retired from the Stoutenborough Insurance Agency. At that time they moved to Forsyth, IL. Surviving is her husband Bill of Forsyth; daughters: Roxanne Stoeckel and her husband Rusty of Orlando, FL, Mary Kathryn (Kit) Paulin and her husband Peter of Forsyth, IL, Tracy Scherer and her husband Dr. Thomas Scherer of Huntington Beach, CA; son-in-law: Pat Penhallegon of Mt. Zion, IL; sister: Elizabeth Schultz and her husband Harry of Towanda, IL; Also surviving are her six grandsons she adored: William Grider of Casselberry, FL; twins Andrew and Nicholas Grider both serving with the U.S. Marine Corp, Patton Penhallegon of Huntington Beach, CA, Prescott Paulin serving with the U.S. Marine Corp, and Parker Paulin of Colgate University, Hamilton, NY.
