Melvin R. Conover, 94, of Sioux City died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at a local nursing home following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel (formerly Nelson Berger Morningside Chapel) with Glen Houts, chaplain of Hospice of Siouxland, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. to service time Monday at the funeral home.

Melvin R. Conover was born July 9, 1910, in Sioux City, the son of James W. and Alice (Sumner) Conover. He was raised in Sioux City and was a member of the first graduating class of East High School.

He married Mary Fern McConville on Valentine's Day, 1936. She preceded him in death on March 16, 2000. Melvin worked for 32 years at Armour Meat Packing in Sioux City and later transferred to their St. Paul facility. He retired as a foreman in 1974 after 41 years of service.

Melvin loved hunting, fishing, golfing, shooting pool and reading.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Jerry and Betty of Sioux City; three daughters, Joyce Davis of Hurst, Texas, Connie Arndt and her husband, Floyd, of Mendota Heights, Minn. and Mary Gail Howard and her husband, Loren, of West Carrollton, Ohio; two sisters, Marjorie Waggoner of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Lorraine Wallman of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Mary Fern, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Edwin and Raymond; and his second wife, Karen.

Memorials may be directed to Siouxland Senior Center, Hospice of Siouxland or McCook Lake Chapter-Izaak Walton League of America.

Edith Markle Irons Schanbacher, 96, of Spang Crest Manor, and formerly a resident of Hearthstone Manor for 7 years, died Monday, July 13, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Hospital. She was the wife of the late Edgar B. Schanbacher. Born in Lebanon on February 18, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Edith Grace Krum Irons. She retired in 1964 from Cornwall Railroad as Manager and Secretary to the Operations Vice President and General Manager. She was the only woman to have engineered the Cornwall Ore Train. She was a former member of the Quentin Riding Club. She was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Lebanon. She enjoyed the arts, loved theater, and played the violin as a young girl. She is survived by several cousins and close friends. Funeral services Thursday at 10 a.m. from Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 126 S. 9th St., Lebanon. Interment at Ebenezer Covenant Cemetery.
