HELEN FOWSER NIXON

Helen Fowser Nixon age 88 of Quinton passed away on Saturday of a Cerebral Hemorrhage. Born in Lower Alloway's Creek, she was the daughter of the late Wyatt and Anna Pedrick Fowser.

She was a graduate of Salem High School and a former member of Salem Grange. A member of Quinton Baptist Church since her youth, she had served there in several ministries. She was a devoted wife and mother.

Her husband Jeffery W. Nixon and eight brothers and sisters predeceased her. Surviving are her daughters, Patricia N. Fox of Quinton Township and Pamela N. Pratt of Cherry Hill, grandchildren, Brian Fox, Timothy Fox, Eliza
beth Tavit, David Pratt and six great grandchildren.

Services will be held 12 noon Tuesday in Woodside Funeral Home 34 Oak Street Salem where friends may call after 11 a.m. Burial will be in Salem Baptist Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideon's International, Box 258, Salem, NJ 08079.

Edith D. Nixon

Edith D. Nixon, who lived with her husband, Harold, in Alloway for nearly 60 years will return to her beloved South Jersey for burial on Sunday, December 7. Born at Penton Abbey Farm, Alloway Twp., on June 22, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Walter R. & Jennie C. Dickson. She died at the age of 84 on November 30 at Brook Grove Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Sandy Spring, MD.

Edith attended Alloway Twp. Public Schools and graduated with the Class of 1936 of Salem High School. She attended the 67th Class Reunion in October 2003. A homemaker most of her life, she worked as a bookkeeper for the H.O. Plasket Insurance Agency, Salem, while her sons were in high school and college. She was a life member of the Salem Seventh Day Adventist Church, where for many years she taught children's Sabbath School classes and volunteered at the Community Services Center.

Surviving are sons, Robert W. Nixon of Clarksville, MD & W. Jay Nixon of Silver Spring, MD; sister, Gladys Bullion of Ft. Myers, FL; 4 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren. Her husband of 62 years, Harold L. "Piggy" Nixon & her brother, Walter R. Dickson Jr. predeceased her.

Services will be held 1pm Sunday in the WOODSIDE FUNERAL HOME, 613 Salem-Quinton Rd., Rt. 49, Quinton Twp., where friends may call after 12 Noon. Burial will be in Marlboro Seventh Day Baptist Church Cemetery.

Doris F. Nixon, age 80, of Salem, died Friday, October, 8, 2004 in her home with her family by her side.

Born in Woodstown, she was the daughter of the late George and Jeanette Pierce Filer.

A homemaker, Mrs. Nixon attended Woodstown High School.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, M. Eston Nixon; her son, Mayhew E. Nixon Jr. of Pilesgrove; her daughters, Jo Ann Miller of Santa Anna, Calif., Gale Nixon of Media, Pa., and Doris Windle of Burlington Township; her step daughter, Joyce Morris of Salem; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Nixon’s memory may be made to the Liberty Fire Co. #2, Fifth St. and Griffith St., Salem, NJ 08079.

Dorothy N. Counsellor, age 84 of Salem, died Saturday, August 2, 2003 in the Salem County Nursing Home in Mannington.

Born in Mannington, daughter of the late Warren and Angeline Weatherby Nixon, she had been a lifelong Salem County resident.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donald "Jack" Counsellor, in January of 1990.

She is survived by her son, Donald Wayne Counsellor of Niantic, CT; her granddaughter, Jacqueline Grady of Avon, CT; two great grandchildren, Katherine and Jack Grady; and her brother, Eston Nixon of Salem, N.J.

Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 6th in Lawnside Cemetery in Pilesgrove.

There will be no calling time prior to the graveside service.

Arrangements are under the direction of the H. T. LAYTON & SON HOME FOR FUNERALS in Woodstown.

Raymond E. Stiles Jr., age 65, of Salem died suddenly on Tuesday at his home. Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Raymond and Erma Nixon Stiles. Mr. Stiles was a truck driver who drove for PPG Industries and Ross Enterprises. He was a Marine Corp. veteran. He was a member of the Mannington Gun Club, the Salem County Marine Corp. League and an exempt fireman of North Bend Hose Company No. 4 of Salem. He enjoyed boating, fishing and was an avid gardener.

Surviving him is his wife, the former Barbara Sutton; son, Raymond and wife Cindy of Pennsville; sister, Joyce Coleman of Perry, Missouri and grandson, Colin.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday January 14 in WOODSIDE FUNERAL HOME 34 Oak Street Salem where friends may call after 12 noon. Burial will be in Lawnside Cemetery, Pilesgrove. Mr. Trotter was married in 1903 to Mamie Conover, the daughter of John D. and Ellen (Weible) Conover. Mrs. Trotter's mother was born in Cape May county, New Jersey, in 1831, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann (Heritage) Weible. In 1840 her parents moved to New Albany, in this state, where they lived until 1870. Her father was a boat-builder in the ship yards there. In 1853 Mrs. Trotter's mother was married to Samuel Conover, the son of J. D. and Soffronia Conover. Samuel Conover was engaged in clerical and commercial work at New Albany, and his death occurred there in 1861, leaving his widow with three small children, William, Walter and Lydia. William lives in Indianapolis; Walter died in his seventeenth year and Mrs. Lydia Walker lives in North Salem. Some years after her husband's death, Mrs. Conover married John Conover, of Ohio, a steamboat man on the river. In 1870 they established their home at North Salem, in this county, and Mr. Conover continued to work on the river as captain of a steamboat until several years later, when he retired from active work and permanently settled at North Salem, where he lived until his death in 1882. To the second marriage of Mrs. Conover there was one daughter born, Mamie E., now the wife of Oliver Trotter. In 1887 Mrs.Conover married John W. Clements, a native of Kentucky and long a resident of North Salem. He was a soldier in the Civil War in Company C, Seventh Regiment Volunteer Infantry, and served three fullyears in the war, after which he lived the life of a farmer in this county until his death, which occurred in North Salem, March 24, 1905...

Former Pendleton Resident Dies

Pendleton, May 12 (Spl)---Mrs. Laura E. Bolinger, died Sunday evening at 8:30 p.m. at Jackson county hospital, Seymour, following a three year illness. Her husband, Charles Bolinger, succumbed in 1949. Mrs. Bolinger was a former resident of Pendleton and at that time she operated a millinery shop and was co-owner of the Lantz Drygoods store. She was born in Salem, Ind., and was a member of the K. of P. and Pythian Sister Lodge.

Surviving are two brothers, William W. Walker of Seymour, and George Walker of Hazelgreen, Mich., and one sister Mrs. Lottie Grint of Clyde, N.C.

The body will arrive at the Cornell Bright funeral establishment at Pendleton Tuesday where friends will be received after 1 p.m. Funeral rites will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Ralph Beckner officiating. Interment will occur in the Grove Lawn cemetery at Pendleton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Ruby Geraldine "Jerry" (Van Cleve) Conover, in 1997.

Dr. Skardon received his BA with honors from the College of Charleston, and his MA and PhD from the University of Chicago. Urban History was his field of specialization, and, he was Professor of History at Youngstown University, was visiting Professor of History at Louisiana State University, and was visiting Instructor of History at the College of Charleston.

He was a member of the Organization of American Historians, Urban History Group, American Society of Church History, Southern Historical Association, American Historical Association and was past President of the Guild of Scholars. He was a member of Episcopal Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul.

He served in the U.S. Army, was captured by the German Forces during the Battle of the Bulge, and was liberated by the Russians May 1945.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Wahtola Scheren; and his two brothers, Ambrose Hooper Skardon and Stephen Lee Skardon.

He is survived by two stepchildren, Peter Scheren of Jupiter, Fla., and Anne Fortin of Hartford, Conn; a sister, Genevieve Skardon White, of Allendale; two brothers, Beverly Norton Skardon of Clemson and James Warren Skardon of Walterboro; 20 nieces and nephews; and 32 great-nieces and nephews also survive him.

Memorials may be sent to Episcopal Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul, 126 Coming St., Charleston, SC 29403.
