I, Arthur Barcalow, of the Township of Upper Freehold in the County of Monmouth and eastern division of the state of New Jersey being very sick and weak in body, but of sound mind memory and understanding, blessed be God for the same, do make and publish this my last will and testatment in manner and form following to wit;
Principally and first of all I commend my immortal soul into the hands of God, who gave it and my body to the earth, to be buried in a decent and Christian like manner at the discretion of my Executors herein after named and to such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give and dispose of the same in the following manner to wit,
First, I give and bequeath to my daughter, Sarah Barcalow to take her choice of one of my best beds with the bedding and curtains to the same and three of the best of my cows and I give her one of my negroe girls which of them she chooses until she is thirty years of age and then the said negroe wench to be free, also I give my said daughter $166.66 to be paid to her one year after my death or sooner if she wants it.
Secondly, I give and bequeath to my son Derrick Barcalow one bed and bedding and curtain the next choice after the above said Sarah and the nimrod colt and my gun and two hundred dollars the money to be paid when he arrives at 21 years of age.
Thirdly, I give and bequeath to my son John Barcalow $60 to be paid 6 months after my death.
Fourthly, I give and bequeath to my son William Barcalow a coal jackett and breeches that formerly belonged to his uncle Lefferd Polhemus.
Fifthly, I order and direct my executor, hereinafter named to sell all the residue of my estate both real and personal in one year after my death.
Sixthly, my will further is that the negroe wench left after Sarah has her choice my live with any (of) my children if she chooses till she is thirty years of age and then she is to be free and whom of them she chooses to live with are to pay my executor for her the value thereof.
Seventh, my will further is that after all my estate both real and personal be sold as above mentioned and my funeral charges and just debts paid all the residue and remainder thereof I give and bequest to my six children namely, first Elenor Beard, secondly William Barcalow, thirdly Tobias Barcalow, fourthly John Barcalow, fifthly Sarah Barcalow and sixthly Derrick Barcalow to be equally divided among them to be paid to said Elenor Beard and William Barcalow their shares six months after the sale of my said estate and the others shares in 18 months after the sale. I appoint James Brewer, my son Tobias Barcalow and my brother, David Barcalow executors of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 4th day of March in the year of our lord 1800.

Obituary; COMMODORE THOMAS A. CONOVER.
Published: September 30, 1864

This gallant officer entered the navy from the State of New-Jersey, in January, 1812, and had consequently been in the service nearly fifty-three years. His first cruise at sea was on board the frigate Essex, commanded by the notable Captain DAVIS PORTER, in the war with England. His next service was under Commodore MCDONOUGH, on Lake Champlain, where he participated in achieving that glorious victory ever the English fleet, on the memorable 11th of September, 1814. Promoted to a lieutenantcy shortly after, he served with his gallant chief on board the Gurrierre in the Mediterranean, and subsequently in other vessels in various portions of the world until his promotion to a Commodore, about 1835, in which capacity he commanded the John Adams, sloop-of-war, some years. In 1848 he was promoted to the rank of Captain, and in the years 1857-8 he commanded the Coast of Africa Squadron, the old Constitution being his flag-ship. In July, 1862, on the creation by law of the grade of Commodores in the navy, he was commissioned as such.

Few men have departed this life leaving a more enviable reputation among those who personally knew and survived them, than the subject of this brief notice. Courageous in fight, a patriot in every sense of the term, he was the beau ideal of a gallant officer. He married, about the year 1822, the eldest daughter of Col.
