      URIAH VANDERVEER CALLED HOME

Uriah Vanderveer was born January 27, 1840, at Carlisle, Warren county, Ohio. He was the son of Benjamin and Jane Vanderveer, one of a large family of whom only a sister, Mrs. Phebe J. Wikoff of Middletown, Ohio, now ninety-one years old, survives him.
On Dec. 5, 1860 he was united in marriage to Laura B. Lanning at Dayton, Ohio. To them five children were born, four daughters and one son, all of whom are living. On Dec. 5, 1910 they celebrated their golden wedding, the children all being present.
Mr. Vanderveer enlisted in the Union Army in the fall of 1861, and served three years and three months in the Fifth Ohio Cavalry. Returning to his home, he resumed his trade, that of a blacksmith, in his own home state.
In 1876 he came to Grinnell, where he continued in business until about twenty years ago when on account of failing health, he retired from active business.
He united with the Congregational church in April, 1887. He has long been an honored member of the Gordon Granger Post of the G.A.R. To him Christian and Patriot, the call came just before midnight, Wednesday, November 4th, calling him from the field of service and conflict to the eternal home, at the ripe age of 74 years, 9 months, and 8 days. The funeral services were held in the home Sunday afternoon, Rev. Frank H. Webster officiating. The bereaved wife, and the children, all of whom were present, have the sympathy of a large circle of friends. Interment was in the family lot in Hazelwood cemetery.
