Grinnell lost one of its real pioneers when Mrs. Laura Vanderveer passed away Monday morning at 10:30 o'clock at her home in this city. Mrs. Vanderveer would have reached her 95th birthday next September. She was born in Warren county, New Jersey, but had spent most of her life in this community.
Her daughters, Mrs. Ada Anthony of Sheridan, Mrs. Lillian Batdorf and Mrs. Anna Penfield, were at home at the time of her death. A son, Ralph Vanderveer of Marshalltown, and his wife also reached Grinnell soon after she passed away.
Funeral services will be held from the residence, 1232 Main Street, Friday afternoon at 5:00, conducted by Rev. Robert Inglis. Burial will be in Hazelwood.

      Lillian Vanderveer was born on Oct 30, 1861 at Carlisle, Warren County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Uriah Vanderveer and Laura Burnett Lanning. Lillian married Harry M. Rains on Jul 15, 1885 at Rock Island County, Illinois. Lillian married John W. Batdorf on Feb 28, 1910. Lillian Vanderveer died on Jun 11, 1937 at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, Iowa, at age 75. Lillian Vanderveer Batdorf, daughter of Uriah and Laura Vanderveer, was born at Carlisle, Ohio, Oct. 30, 1861 and passed away June 11, 1937, at the age of 75 years, 7 months and 11 days, after a long illness. When about 15 years of age she came to Grinnell with her parents to make her home. On July 15, 1885, she was united in marriage with Harry M. Rains of Rock Island, Ill. To this union, one son, Ruel Harry, was born.
Her second marriage occurred Feb. 28, 1910 to John W. Batdorf of Wellsville, Kansas, where she resided until a few years after her husband's death. She was a member of the Methodist church of Wellsville. Later she came to make her home with her mother at Grinnell. After her mother's death two years ago she continued to reside at the old home with her sister, Mrs. Anna Penfield.
She leaves to mourn her loss one son, Ruel H. Rains and wife and one grandson,Ruel Eric Rains of Kansas City, two sisters, Mrs. Ada J. Anthony of Kellogg and Mrs. Anna B. Penfield of Grinnell and one brother, Ralph U. Vanderveer of Marshalltown. One sister, Mrs. Eva M. Card, passed away March 11, 1930. Three nieces and four nephews also survive. One niece, Mrs. Hazel Saunders, passed away two years ago.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock.

Pall bearers nephews of the deceased, were Emory Anthony of Haven, Ray Anthony of Brooklyn, Leslie Anthony of Cedar Rapids, David Anthony of Sheridan, Wallace Cloyd of Kellogg, and Harry Kenner of Sheridan.
Burial was at Hazelwood cemetery.
Those from a distance attending the funeral were Ruel H. Rains, wife and son of Kansas City, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Vanderveer of Marshalltown, Dr. and Mrs. Frank Vanderveer of Blue Grass, Iowa and Leslie Anthony and daughter of Cedar Rapids.

      Ada Jane Vanderveer was born on Sep 24, 1865 at Postown, Butler County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Uriah Vanderveer and Laura Burnett Lanning. Ada married Lincoln Ellsworth Anthony, son of David Anthony and Elizabeth (Unknown), on Jan 1, 1891 at Grinnell, Powshiek County, Iowa. Ada Jane Vanderveer died on Jun 22, 1961 at Chelsea, Tama County, Iowa, at age 95.
      SHERIDAN RITES CONDUCTED FOR MRS. ADA ANTHONY
Services were held Saturday, June 24th from the Sheridan Methodist church for Mrs. Ada Jane Anthony, 95, of Chelsea, who died June 22nd at the Hilligas Nursing Home in Chelsea. Burial was in the Sheridan cemetery.
Officiating at the services was the Rev. C.E. Kingsley, pastor of the First Baptist church, Grinnell. Music was furnished by Mrs. Fred Weaver, pianist, and Mrs. Floyd Johnson and Mrs. Charles Horrigan, vocalist.
Pallbearers were grandsons, Charles Anthony, David Anthony, Earl Anthony, Thomas Anthony, James Johnson and Robert Saunders. In charge of flowers were Mrs. Grace Brown and Mrs. Alice Wolcott.
Born Ada Jane Vanderveer in Post Town, Ohio, on Sept. 24th, 1865, she was the daughter of Uriah and Laura Vanderveer. Mrs. Anthony moved with her parents to Grinnell in 1876.
She was educated in the Grinnell schools, graduating from high school with the class of 1883. She taught school until her marriage in 1891 to Lincoln E. Anthony of Sheridan. They lived most of their married life in Sheridan.
Mrs. Anthony was a member of the Sheridan Methodist church at the time of her death. She also belonged to the Sheridan W.S.C.S. She had been in the care of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kenner of near Haven since breaking her hip in 1955.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1929 and a daughter. She is survived by seven children: Emory Anthony, Mrs. Harry Kenner and Mrs. Laura Johnson, all of Chelsea, David Anthony of Tama, Ray Anthony of Brooklyn, Leslie Anthony of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Wallace Cloyd of Newburg.
Also surviving are 30 grandchildren, 72 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, and a brother, Ralph Vanderveer of Marshalltown. on Jun 23, 1961.

      Mary Eva Vanderveer was born on Dec 30, 1867 at Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Uriah Vanderveer and Laura Burnett Lanning. Mary married Clayton J. Card on Feb 17, 1910 at Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa. Mary Eva Vanderveer died on Mar 1, 1930 at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, Iowa, at age 62. The death of Mrs. Eva Mary Vanderveer-Card quite suddenly Tuesday morning removed from Grinnell one of its early settlers. Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, December 30, 1867, she came to Grinnell with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Uriah Vanderveer, in 1876, and for fifty-four years this has been her home.
She grew here into active and interesting womanhood, and was recognized by all who knew her as a woman of great work, modest, quiet, and helpful.
In February 1910 she was united in marriage to C.J. Card, a well known successful business and salesman of Grinnell and one of the proprietors for many years of the Card Shoe Store.
Her death occurred quite suddenly at her home in Grinnell where she had lived with her mother for several years.
Relatives surviving her are three sisters, Mrs. Lillian Batdorf and Mrs. Anna Penfield of Grinnell and Mrs. Ada Anthony of Haven. Her mother also survives her and one brother, Ralph Vanderveer of Marshalltown.
Out of town friends attending the funeral were Mrs. J.M. Fredrickson of Estherville, Fred M. Card of Burlington and son, Clayton, of the same place, Mrs. Ruel Rains and son Ruel of Kansas City.
Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Edmund Vittum and Dr. W.W. Bolt were held from the home Thursday afternoon. Music was a solo by Mr. E.B. Spencer. Bearers were F.C.Clayberg, Pete Staffanou, Peter Duke, Wallace Grounds, Carl Phelps, and Dr. C.V. Lawton.

      Anna Bowne Vanderveer was born on Mar 1, 1874. She was the daughter of Uriah Vanderveer and Laura Burnett Lanning. Anna married Wilfred Penfield on Nov 26, 1903 at Grinnell, Powshiek County, Iowa. Anna Bowne Vanderveer died on Dec 18, 1951 at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, Iowa, at age 77. Mrs. Anna B. Penfield, daughter of Uriah and Laura Lanning Vanderveer was born March 1, 1874 in Post Town, Butler county, Ohio and passed away Dec. 18, 1951 at the Community hospital in Grinnell.
When 2 years old she moved to Grinnell, which had been her home until she was married to Wilfred E. Penfield of Grinnell Nov. 26, 1903. They lived in Little Falls, Minn., for several years. After her husband's death she moved back to Grinnell and resided here until her death. She was a member of the Congregational church, the Cemetery association, the Daughter of Union Veteran's and Sunset Club.
She was preceded in death by her father, mother, two sisters, Mrs. Lillian Batdorf and Mrs. Eva M. Card. Those who survive are one brother, Ralph U. Vanderveer, one sister, Mrs. Ada Anthony and numerous nieces and nephews.

      Ralph Uriah Vanderveer was born on Apr 29, 1879 at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, Iowa. He was the son of Uriah Vanderveer and Laura Burnett Lanning. Ralph married Estella Sparks on Apr 7, 1908 at Winterset, Madison County, Iowa. Ralph Uriah Vanderveer died on Mar 29, 1963 at Marshalltown, Marshall County, Iowa, at age 83. Ralph was buried at Hazelwood Cemetery, Grinnell, Poweshiek County, Iowa.

Ralph U. Vanderveer,83, of Marshalltown, former Grinnell resident, died at a Marshalltown rest home Friday, Mar. 29th, where he had been a patient the past two years.
Funeral services were held Monday, Apr. 1st, from the Estel-Perrin funeral home in Marshalltown with the Rev. James Delahooke, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Burial was in Hazelwood cemetery here.
Pallbearers were Carl Anthony, Roger Clayton, Earl Anthony, Clifford Anthony, Lawrence Lang, and Charles Anthony.
Born Apr. 29th, 1879, at Grinnell, he was the son of Uriah and Laura Lanning Vanderveer. He received his education and grew to manhood in this community.
On Apr. 7th, 1908, he was united in marriage with Estella Sparks and they made their home in Winterset and Grinnell before moving to Marshalltown in 1j910. Mrs. Vanderveer preceded him in death in 1961.
For many years Mr. Vanderveer was a shoemaker and cobbler in Marshalltown and in recent years had sold nursery stock and novelties.
He was a member of the Golden Age Club and attended the Methodist Church.
Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.

     Harry married Lillian Vanderveer, daughter of Uriah Vanderveer and Laura Burnett Lanning, on Jul 15, 1885 at Rock Island County, Illinois.

      Raul H. Rains was born on Apr 19, 1886. He was the son of Harry M. Rains and Lillian Vanderveer.

     John married Lillian Vanderveer, daughter of Uriah Vanderveer and Laura Burnett Lanning, on Feb 28, 1910. John W. Batdorf died on Jan 21, 1918.

      Lincoln Ellsworth Anthony was born on Apr 29, 1863 at Warsaw, Hancock County, Illinois. He was the son of David Anthony and Elizabeth (Unknown). Lincoln married Ada Jane Vanderveer, daughter of Uriah Vanderveer and Laura Burnett Lanning, on Jan 1, 1891 at Grinnell, Powshiek County, Iowa. "A man, stalwart in mind as well as in stature passed out of life last Friday evening when a car in which Lincoln Ellsworth Anthony was driving was struck by a train on the Northwestern tracks at Tama and Mr. Anthony was killed. The accident happened about 6:20 o'clock. A freight train had just pulled east and a freight train was coming west which Mr. Anthony could not see. As he moved forward the special train struck his car and killed him instantly. This was a special "coast to coast silk train" and one of which Mr. Anthony could not know.
The death of Mr. Anthony would be a serious loss to any community, but to his old neighbors and friends where he has lived for half a century it was a severe shock, as the news of his death reached them. On all hands were heard words of regret at the loss the community had suffered and kindliest thoughts of the manly man who had been so suddenly called to his eternal rest.
Lincoln Ellsworth Anthony, oldest son of David and Elizabeth Anthony, was born at Carthage, Illinois, May 29, l863, and died at Tama, Iowa, June l4, l929, aged 66 years and l6 days. When he was 4 years of age he came with his parents to Tama county and later to Poweshiek where practically all of his life has been lived with the exception of the past two years spent near Haven where he resided at his death.
On January l, l891, he married Ada J. Vanderveer of Grinnell, Iowa. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife and eight children: Emory, Ray Leslie, David, Mrs. Hazel Saunders, Mrs. Myrtle Cloyd, Mrs. Laura Johnson and Mrs. Harry Kenner, all of whom were present except Ray who is in San Jose, California, and was unable to come. He also leaves l9 grandchildren. When but a young man he united with the Sheridan Methodist Church and remained a member until his death. He was also a member of the Modern Woodmen and Odd Fellow lodges of Sheridan.
Funeral services were held at the home near Haven at one o'clock Monday and further services at the Sheridan Methodist Church at 2:30 with burial in the Sheridan cemetery. The services were in charge of Rev. W.B. Kight of Maxwell, Iowa, a friend of Mr. Anthony in the 90's when he was pastor of the Sonora-Sheridan circuit.
Songs were sung at this service by Mr. Earl Soth, Mrs. C. E. Dexter, J. F. Shope and Henry Schultz and bearers were nephews, Joe Haynes, Earl Haynes, Ellis Haynes and Robert Haynes, Joe Deedrick and James Spire. The services were in charge of the Sheridan Odd Fellows lodge of which Mr. Anthony was a member of this order also includes within its ranks the Modern Woodmen of Sheridan. Mr. Anthony being a member also of that lodge.
Mr. Anthony's life was one worthy of note. He was an active and successful farmer. Though quiet in his manner he always carried with him the evidence of strong character and determination. He was a worth man living up to the religious principles inculcated by the church of which he was a member. He leaves in his large family a group of young men and women, an honor to any father and mother, and who remember with gratittudefullness the example which was set for them by a devoted father and a conscientious earnest worker."

      Emory Vanderveer Anthony was born on Nov 28, 1891 at Sheridan Twp., Poweshiek County, Iowa. He was the son of Lincoln Ellsworth Anthony and Ada Jane Vanderveer. Emory married Lottie Cole on Mar 3, 1915. Emory married Mary Remsdel Reed in Jul, 1917. Emory Vanderveer Anthony died on Jan 28, 1981 at Tama, Tama County, Iowa, at age 89. Emory was buried on Jan 31, 1981 at Haven Cemetery, Tama, Tama County, Iowa.

      Hazel Burnett Anthony was born on Mar 11, 1893 at Sheridan Twp., Poweshiek County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Lincoln Ellsworth Anthony and Ada Jane Vanderveer. Hazel married Frank E. Saunders on Jan 1, 1920 at Sheridan Twp., Poweshiek County, Iowa. Hazel Burnett Anthony died on May 9, 1935 at Poweshiek County, Iowa, at age 42.
      USEFUL WOMAN OF SHERIDAN PASSES AWAY
Hazel Burnett Anthony, eldest daughter of Lincoln and Ada Anthony, was born in Sheridan township March ll, l893, and passed awzy at the home of her mother May 9, l935, at the age of 42 years, one month and 28 days. Her entire life, up to the time of her marriage, was spent on the home place in Sheridan. She attended the district school and went three months to Grinnell High School but was forced to discontinue her education on account of poor health.
She united with the Sheridan M.E. Church at the age of l4, and continued in the faith through life.
She was united in marriage to Frank Saunders on January l, l920. To this union four children were born, one daughter, Edith, having died in infancy.
She leaves to mourn her loss her husband; one son, Robert; two daughters, Mildred and Jean; her mother; four brothers, David of Sheridan, Ray of Brooklyn, Leslie of Cedar Rapids, Emory of Chelsea, three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Cloyd of Newburg, Mrs. Laura Johnson of Sheridan, Mrs. Mary Kenner of Chelsea; her aged grandmother, Mrs. Laura B. Vanderveer of Grinnell. and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Sheridan Methodist church at 2 o'clock Saturday, with the Rev. W. B. Kight in charge. She was laid to rest in the Sheridan cemetery.
Songs were sung by Mrs. Earl Soth, Mrs. Libbie Graff, J.F. Shope and Henry Schultz. Pallbearers were Lester Hendrickson, Harvey Harris, Max Hays, Charles Haynes, Charles Mayo, and Lester Spire. on May 11, 1935.

Born Feb. l8, l922 in Sheri don Township;in, the daughter of Ralph Ray and Helen Wheeler Anthony, she graduated from Brooklyn High School in l940, and married Dewain Sparrgrove on Oct. 20, l940.
Marjorie and Dewey, as he is commonly called, made their home in Cedar Rapids before moving to West Branch, where they operated a grocery store. In l978, they moved to the Traer community, where they operated the Jack & Jill Grocery Store.
Marjorie was a devoted mother and grandmother. When she was not helping Dewey in the grocery store, she was spending time with her family, sewing, reading or doing crossword puzzles. In recent months, Marjorie had been in failing health and was a patient at Covenant Medical Center when her death came.

      Wallace Edgar Cloyd was born on Nov 12, 1894 at Salisbury, Chariton County, Missouri. He was the son of Jesse Cloyd and Susan Ehrhardt. Wallace married Myrtle La Riene Anthony, daughter of Lincoln Ellsworth Anthony and Ada Jane Vanderveer, on Jan 1, 1920 at Sheridan Twp., Poweshiek County, Iowa. Wallace Edgar Cloyd died on Oct 31, 1976 at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, Iowa, at age 81. Wallace was buried at Sheridan Cemetery, Sheridan Twp., Poweshiek County, Iowa.
      WALLACE CLOYD RITES TUESDAY
Wallace E. Cloyd, 81, of Rte. 2 Kellogg, died early Sunday at Grinnell General Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with Howard Anthony and Lonzo Nealon officiating. Organist was Mrs. Lester Sayles, and vocalists were Janet Klenk, Adele Jeske, Troy Craig, and Dan Henry. Pallbearers were Charles Anthony, Earl Anthony, Richard Anthony, Jesse Carter, Dale Johnson and James Johnson. Burial was at Sheridan Cemetery.
Should friends desire, memorials in Mr. Cloyd's name may be left at the Smith Funeral Home.
The son of Jesse and Susan Ehrhardt Cloyd, he was born Nov. l2, l894, at Salisbury, Mo. He attended rural schools near his home. In l9l7, he came to Iowa to farm and later served in the U.S. Army during World War 1.j
On Jan. 1, 1920, he was married to Myrtle Anthony at her parents' home near Sheridan. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Cloyd continued to farm in the Chester and Newburg areas until his retirement.
Mr. Cloyd is survived by his wife, Myrtle; two sons, Dr. Jesse Cloyd of Springfield, Mo., and Edgar Cloyd of Hudson, Iowa; six grand-children; three great-grandchildren; and a sister Mrs. Kate Brewer of Marceline, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters, Mrs. Alva Lampe, Mrs. Willie Smith, Mary Cloyd, and Mrs. Gertrude Carter.

      Dr. Jessie Lincoln Cloyd was born on Feb 2, 1924. He was the son of Wallace Edgar Cloyd and Myrtle La Riene Anthony.

      Hilding Axel Johnson was born on Jun 16, 1886 at Grenna, Smoland, Sweden. Hilding married Laura Elizabeth Anthony, daughter of Lincoln Ellsworth Anthony and Ada Jane Vanderveer, on Jun 18, 1921 at Newton, Jasper County, Illinois.
