John Hale Conover Jr., 76, a former mathematics teacher in Vershire, died at his home February 1, 2000, in Passumpsic, Vermont. He was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, on June 17, 1923, and served in the Navy during World War II, seeing action aboard the U.S.S. Texas off Okinawa during the landing there. He received a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University in 1949, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Zeta. In 1967, he earned a master’s degree from Wesleyan University. Mr. Conover will be remembered for his many years teaching secondary school mathematics at Kent School for Boys, St. Johnsbury Academy and the Mountain School Program of Milton Academy in Vershire, from which he retired in 1992. He also served as the moderator on the school board and as town
moderator in Barnet, Vermont. In his retirement, Mr. Conover enjoyed hunting frogs with his great-grandson Michael. He was heard to observe, on occasion, that life is a circus and that, whether he was in the center ring performing or in the bleachers watching, he was enjoying the show.

PORT MURRAY -- Winifred Cyphers, 85, of Port Murray died Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at Easton Hospital in Wilson Borough, Pa.
Born May 10, 1922 in Bushkill, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Harry and the late Sadie Moser Arnold.She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Cyphers in 2004, and sister, Madeline Smith.
She retired in 1987 from Leacock Company of Washington. Before that, she was a manager/supervisor of the cafeteria at the Mansfield Township Elementary School in Port Murray.
Winifred was a member of Anderson United Methodist Church. She participated in the Anderson United Methodist Church Women where she was a Sunday school teacher, was treasurer and served on the Board of Trustees. She also was a member of The Mother's Club of Anderson.
She graduated from Nazareth High School in 1941.
Surviving are a daughter, Carol Sawyer of Port Murray; a son, Harry D. Cyphers and his wife, Stella of Bangor, Pa; seven grandchildren, Dennis & Kimberly Cyphers, Bruce, Brian and Gary Eckhardt, Dennis Sawyer and Kimberly Damian; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday at DeVoe Funeral Service Inc. Interment followed afterward in Port Murray Cemetery, Port Murray, NJ.

Harry S. Cyphers, 83, of Port Murray, NJ, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004 in Hackettstown Community Hospital, Hackettstown, NJ. Born: On March 25, 1921, in Karrville, NJ, he was a son of the late Carl C. and Dorothy Conover Cyphers; and a stepmother, the late Mabel Kornfield Cyphers. Personal: He and his wife, the former Winifred Arnold were married for 62 years. Harry was a carpenter who helped build many houses. In his early years, he worked for the Port Murray Dairy. His main employment was working for the Road Department in Mansfield Twp., NJ until he retired in 1983. After his retirement, he worked for Mayberry Sales and Service as a mechanic. He was a Staff Sergeant in the Army serving with the 559 Army Air Force Base Unit. Harry received the Good Conduct medal, the American Defense service medal, and the European African Middle Eastern service medal with seven Bronze Stars. He loved hunting and fishing with his grandson, Dennis Cyphers. Memberships: He was one of the founding members and past Chief of the Mansfield Fire Co. #1, Port Murray, NJ. He was one of the members responsible for the fire company joining the NJ State Fireman's relief association. He was an original member of the Anderson Rod and Gun Club. He was a life member and former board chairman of the Anderson United Methodist Church in Mansfield Twp., NJ. He also held many offices and served on many committees within the church. Survivors: In addition to his wife, Winifred, he is survived by a son, Harry and his wife, Stella of Bangor, Pa; a daughter, Carol Sawyer of Port Murray; two brothers, Charles "Bert" of Hackettstown, Carl "Bo" of Washington, NJ; seven grandchildren, Dennis and Kimberly Cyphers, Dennis Sawyer, Bruce, Brian and Gary Eckhardt, Kimberly Damian; and 20 great grandchildren. A sister, Charlotte died earlier. Services: Family and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Monday at 1 p.m. in the DeVoe Funeral Service, 136 West Washington Ave., Washington, NJ, with the Rev. Reggie Corfield presiding. Calling hours will be on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Port Murray Cemetery, Port Murray, NJ. Carl C. Cyphers Jr.
WASHINGTON -- Carl C. Cyphers Jr., 82, died Friday, March 18, 2005, in Warren Hospital, Phillipsburg.
Born on May 14, 1922 in Mt. Bethel, he was a son of the late Carl C., Sr. and Dorothy Conover Cyphers.
He was the husband of the former Jean Zimmer.
Carl was a truck driver, employed by Pryslak Trucking, Great Meadows. Carl had also worked for Ingersoll Rand, Phillipsburg and the Port Murray Dairy. He served in the Army during World War II in the European Theatre, and was involved in D Day. Carl loved fishing and was also a handy man who loved his wife, family, and friends. Carl will be missed by all who knew him.
He was a member of the Anderson Methodist Church in Port Murray.
In addition to his wife, Jean of Washington, he is survived by a son, Craig, and his wife, Grace, of Enola, Pa; a brother, Charles "Bert", and his wife, Betty, of Hackettstown; a sister, Charlotte, and three granddaughters, Jamie, and her husband, Chad, Ashley, and Courtney.
A daughter, Gwen, died earlier.
Services were held in the church, Port Murray. Arrangements were by the DeVoe Funeral Services, Inc., Washington. Burial was in Port Murray Cemetery, Port Murray.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church, Route 57, Port Murray, N.J. 07865.

      Col. Nelson P. Conover was born on Jul 23, 1932 at Spring Hill, Butler County, Alabama. He was the son of Louis Stephen Conover and Margaret Louise Perry. Nelson married Elizabeth Jones on Oct 6, 1953. Col. Nelson P. Conover died on Oct 16, 2006 at Columbia, Howard County, Maryland, at age 74.

Nelson P. Conover, retired colonel in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, died Oct. 16 in Columbia, Md., following a heart attack. He was 74.
Col. Conover was born on July 23, 1932, in Spring Hill, Ala. He received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Auburn University in 1953, soon after which he accepted a regular officer's commission in the U.S. Army.
He later earned a master's degree in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1960.
He also graduated from the Command and General Staff College in 1968 and the Army War College in 1973.
Col. Conover's service began in Korea with the 1343rd Engineer Battalion, and included two combat tours in Vietnam -- with the 1st Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division in 1966 and as the commanding officer of the 588th Engineer Battalion along the Cambodian border in 1970.
Col. Conover also served three years in Germany, and his other notable military postings included being on the staff of the Safeguard Ballistic Missile Defense Program; district engineer of the Walla Walla District in Washington state, where he fought to protect Hells Canyon as a National Recreation Area; and commander of the 4th Advanced Individual Training Brigade and later chief of staff at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri.
He also served as director of the Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg, Miss.
Col. Conover retired from the Army Corps of Engineers in 1980, and worked for another 15 years as a consulting engineer and construction project manager for the firm Walk, Haydel & Associates Inc. in New Orleans.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Bettie of Columbia; two sons, Charlie Conover of Chesapeake, Va., and Kirk Conover of Columbia; and two granddaughters.
