ULYSSES HENDRICKSON

“Brick” Hendrickson, as he is familiarly known throughout the county, is popular with everybody, and while holding office made an excellent and capable sheriff. He was one of the first men to move into Jasper county after the war. He came from Iowa in 1866, and engaged in
farming near Oronogo.

He is a native of the Buckeye State, and was born in Holmes county, Ohio, in the month of April, 1832. His father was Samuel Hendrickson who had been born in the State of Maryland, and emigrated from there to Ohio about the year 1812. He married Sarah Weatherby. The subject of this biography lived in Ohio till the year 1846, and then when fourteen years of age moved with his father to Iowa, and settled in Linn county of that state. There Mr. Hendrickson grew up to manhood. He was united in marriage in the year 1855, to Miss M. J. Cochran, of Linn county, Iowa. He followed farming while he lived in Iowa. The climate of that country was cold, and he determined to escape from the long boring winters and bleak winds of that northern climate to a more congenial latitude. He accordingly selected southwest Missouri as the garden spot of the world combining all the advantages of soil and climate that heart could wish, and arrived in this county, July, 1866.

Emigration had just then begun to pour in, and the country to build up again after the war, and Mr. Hendrickson was one of the first of the new arrivals about Oronogo. He began farming, and was engaged in that occupation up to the time of his election as sheriff. In 1872 he became interested also in a drug store at Oronogo, though his time was not given to its personal management. In politics he had always been a Democrat, and a staunch supporter of the old party that has come down through all the vicissitudes of American politics from the days of Jefferson and Jackson.

Knowing his worth as a good citizen, and as a man of business capacity, the Democrats in 1874 selected him as their candidate for sheriff. He was elected, and for the two years during which he filled the office he discharged its duties to the general satisfaction of the people of the county. He was a candidate for the same office on the Democratic ticket in 1876, but the whole Democratic ticket, with one exception, was defeated--there being three tickets in the field. He was the only candidate on his ticket who had but one competitor to contend with--both the other parties uniting on one man as their candidate for sheriff in opposition. It was something complimentary to Mr. Hendrickson, however, that he polled the highest Democratic vote in the county by about one hundred.

Beside carrying on farming at Oronogo he has been interested in the mining business, and has interests in mineral land at Webb City, and is of the opinion at the present time that he has struck “big mineral,” an anticipation which all his friends wish may be carried out. He is a man well known throughout the county, and is popular with a large class of people. Unpretentious in appearance, he lays claim to nothing beyond what he is--a man of the people. He is a man genial in disposition, free and open in his manners, and this element of his character contributes not a little to his personal popularity. As a public officer he was obliging and prompt, and held the old-fashioned notion that the offices were created for the benefit of the people of the county, and not for the special good of those who were elected to fill them. His integrity was never questioned, and he is known as a man thoroughly honest and reliable.

John Moody was born on Jul 21, 1828 at Sumner County, Tennessee. He was the son of Rev. Spencer Moody and Susannah Hendricks. John married Mary Dean, daughter of James Dean and Sarah (Unknown), on Jan 3, 1850 at Hancock County, Illinois. John Moody died in 1917 at at the home of his daughter Mary, Kimball, Neosho County, Kansas.
After Mary's death, John divided his time between Rosa's and Mary Hancy's home driving his old mare, Mag, between Shaw and Kimball staying two weeks with each. He happened to be at Kimball when the tragic fire occurred at Shaw.

John and Mary (Dean) Moody started their married life as a farm couple in Hancock County, Illinois. He also ran a saw mill. About 1866 they moved, with John's parents and a number of his brothers and sisters to Neosho County, Kansas. John Moody could find no place to set up a saw mill in Southeast Kansas. The story is told that he said, "I traveled for fifty miles in Kansas and could not find a stick big enough to switch a kid with:" Meanwhile, Mary's parents, James and Sarah Dean and their numerous children had moved to Barton County, Missouri where he established a sawmill on North Folk River just about two miles west of the small village of Boston. There are some reasons to believe that he moved the mill up and down the river and that the family lived for a time, at least, in the village of Alba in Jasper County, Missouri; however they owned land in section 27, Barton County, Missouri. The family remained in Missouri until 1884 when they came to Neosho County, Kansas, and established a molasses mill near Shaw, Kansas. Of the twelve children born to them six died in infancy or early childhood. The births of these children who died in Illinois may be buried at the Ebenezer Baptist Church which is south of West Point in Adams County, Illinois. It has been a family belief that the Moodys attended this church. However, they may have attended Bethel Church in the same vicinity. Mary Dean Moody's obituary states that 15 children were born--only 12 listed in the Bible.
