Jean McAllister Herbert was born on 27. Oct. 1914 at San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. She was the daughter of Col. William Dey Herbert M. D. and Maud Rue Smith. Jean McAllister Herbert married Preston Steele, son of Capt. Theophilus Breckiridge Steele and Elizabeth Cram. Jean McAllister Herbert married Charles Louis Willard Jr., son of Charles Louis Willard Sr. and Margaret Elizabeth Deshler Shearer. Jean McAllister Herbert died on 28. Dec. 1968 at San Mateo County, California, at age 54. Jean and Preston married in California about nine months before the birth of their first child, which happened to be in Dec of 1934. She was just barely 20 years old when her first child was born. They had two children, both still living. Jean had a third child with her second husband Charles Willard. She was very creative and artistic. One Christmas, San Francisco Chronicle columnist Herb Caen wrote about her upside down Christmas tree hanging in the front window of her home in San Francisco. Every year was another suprise where the Christmas tree was concerned. Jean was buried at the Golden Gate National Cemetary in San Mateo Co., CA (Plot B 331A) on 2 Jan 1968. Also buried there are her parents, Col. William D. Herbert and Maud S. Herbert.
