In the name of God amen, I Mathias Lane of the Canajoharie in the County of Montgomery and State of New York being weak in body but of sound Mind & perfect Memory and knowing that it is appointed for all Men once to die make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say I recommend my Soul to God who gave it in humble hope of a gracious reception through the Merits of our lord Jesus Christ and my body to the dust to be buried in a decent Christian manner at the discretion of my Executors herein after mentioned and named. With regard to my worldly affairs wherewith it hath pleased the lord to bless me I dispose of them in the manner following - I will order and direct that my funeral charges and all my just Debts of every description be first paid by my Executors immediately after my decease. - I give and bequeath unto my beloved Wife Margareth all my household furniture and Implements of household - Also one Room in my dwelling House that is the Room above the cellar Kitchen together with the privilege and use of one fourth part of the cellar in my now dwelling House with free ingress, egress & regress. I do further give and bequeath unto my said Wife the Sum of one hundred and two Dollars and fifty Cents annually to be paid out of my real Estate and I do hereby will and order that the said Sum of one hundred and two Dollars & fifty Cents shall be paid by my Devisees annually in the following manner that is to say I will that my six sons John, Gilbert, William, Cornelius, Phenix & Mathias their heirs or Assigns shall pay to my said Wife Annually the sum of ten Dollars and fifty Cents each and I will and order that my five Daughters Polly, Sally, Elenor, Margareth & Harriet shall pay they their Heirs or Assigns unto my said wife annually the sum of seven Dollars and fifty Cents each and I do will and order that my said beloved Wife shall be entitled to the different Legacies and annual payments during her widowhood and no longer. - I give and bequeath all my real and personal Estate (except such as shall be herein after excepted and not aboved disposed of) unto my Sons John, Gilbert, William, Cornelius, Phenix 7 Mathias and my Daughters Polly, Sally, Elenor, Margareth & Harriet to be devided in the following proportion that is the Sons to have each three parts and the Daughters each two parts out of five that is to say, if the Sons have three hundred Dollars a piece the Daughters are to have two hundred Dollars each and so in that proportion. - It is my will however and I hereby order and direct that in apportioning my Estate among my Children such Sums or Estate shall be deemed and taken as part of my Estate and shall be deemed a part of his or her proportion who has been so advanced so the all my Sons may be equal to each other and all my Daughters may be equal to one another this devise of my real Estate to them my said Children their Heirs and Assigns for ever. It is also my will and I do further direct and order that such improvements as have been made by my three oldest Sons namely John Gilbert and William in erecting buildings on any of my Estate such buildings shall not be valued or deemed a part of my Estate but they who have so build shall be allowed the exclusive profits of such building according to the value thereof over and above his equal proportion. - It is further my will and order that two Acres of land on which the Saw Mill is erected be reserved out of my real Estate aboved devised and the two Acres of land are hereby excepted in such a Shape form and situation as to contain the said Saw Mill - the Dam the water Courses necessary to & for said Mill the yards for logs & Boards together with necessary Roads to & from said Mill which last said two Acres of land together with the said Saw Mill I give and devise unto my five Sons to wit, John, William, Cornelius, Phenix and Mathias to be apportioned among them in the following manner that is the equal one third part thereof unto my son John his Heirs and Assigns for ever and the further equal one third part thereof unto my Son William his Heirs and Assigns for ever, and remaining equal one third part thereof - unto my Sons Cornelius, Phenix, and Mathias their Heirs and Assigns forever. Mathew was the owner of 100 acres of land near Pluckemin, and besides being a store-keeper, is said to have been the first postmaster of Pluckemin. He was well educated and wrote a clear business hand. His store adjoined his residence. During the revolution, after the battle of Princeton, when Washington went to Pluckemin, "in the Mathew Lane house, it is said, the thirteen captured (British) officers were placed under guard." His personal property was inventoried at $7, 266.82, and included five slaves inventoried at $765, showing that he was for those times, a man of means.

Matthias Lane was baptized on 26. Feb. 1723. He married Elizabeth Sutphen, daughter of Guisbert Sutphen and Geertruy Aertse Van Pelt, on 18. Nov. 1743 at Marlboro, Monmouth County, New Jersey. Matthias Lane Captain of the First Regiment of Artillery in 1777. He a Colonel in 1780. He died on 17. Jan. 1804 at Bedminister Twp., Somerset County, New Jersey, at age 82. He died on 17. Jan. 1804 at Bedminster, Somerset County, New Jersey, at age 82; The will of Matthias, dated 5 Nov 1801 and probated 30 Jan 1804 bequeathed his farm of about 350 acres and the 25 acre wood lot to his youngest son, Peter but required him to pay 200 pounds to his widow Elizabeth and provide her with sufficient maintenance and support. To Matthias, he gave his silver watch; to Guisbert the farm 'whereon he now lives in the County of Albany, New York' 'which I purchased of Nicholas Hoofman of the city of New York, containing about 145 acres,' for his life and children afterward, but if no children, same to revert to Matthias other children.. There were also bequests to his children of 50 to 200 pounds each, Derick and Aaron each receiving the larger sum named. Matthias was known in his latter years as Matthias Sr. Most of the Lanes living during the past half century in Bedminster have Matthias for their ancestor. On the late Isaac Voorhees farm is what is known as the Lane Family Burying ground,' where both Matthias Sr., his wife, Elizabeth Sutphen, his sons, Matthias Jr. and Peter and their wives, together with some thirty other of their descendants are buried. It is still in use for burial purposes and should be cared for by a permanent endowment. Matthias was an elder of the Bedminster Dutch Church, when it was incorporated, on 12 Sep 1791. He was first made elder in 1789, and again in 1793 and 1797. This church was located about two miles east of his farm and was the nearest Dutch church which he could attend. It was organized in 1758 and a building was erected in 1760. During the Revolution, Matthias was beyond the age for soldier work at the front, but he sent three of his sons, Matthias Jr., Guisbert and Derick, the latter becoming a Captain, and serving throughout the whole war. As to Matthias Sr., himself, the following from the pen of the late Dr., A. W. McDowell is most interesting. Speaking of a British cavalry raid upon Pluckeim, and the excitement it caused the neighborhood, he says: 'Peter Lane's father, Matthias Sr. was appointed to collect up all the pewter plates and dishes, which were much in use those days, and deposit them at certain recognized places, viz: Pluckeim and Larger Cross Roads. They were then melted into bullets to shoot the British. Lead was scarce, and these pewter bullets, run in common moulds, were the substitute.'
The following inscription was on the tombstone of Matthias: 'In memory of Matthias Lane, born Janr y 18th 1721 who Departed this life Janr y 17th 1804 Aged 83 years An healthful Body Cheerful in mind Useful in Life In death Resign'd His trust was placed In Christ Alone And by his works his' Worth was known.

In a conveyance of land in 1808 his name appears as Mathew M., and this name appears on the Baptismal record of his son 'William' at Bedminster, in 1804. A Rev. Mr. Lane writes: 'With my parents I visited grandfather in Pa. when I was three years old (1835). Grandfather had died before the visit and grandmother came home with us to Mt. Pleasant (near Milford) N.J., and remained with us for several months. I remember her as a jolly, good, kind, old lady, quite fleshy and fond of children; I thought then the best grandmother there was. Grandfather had moved from N.J. to Pa.. They both died in Pa.'

Matthias Lane Jr. married Gertrude Wyckoff, daughter of Simon Wyckoff and Alche Van Dorn. Matthias Lane Jr. was buried c 1819 at Lane Family Burial Ground, Bedminster, Somerset County, New Jersey. He died c 1819 at Bedminster, Somerset County, New Jersey; His will was dated 25 Nov 1816 and probated 30 Nov 1819. It was signed 'Matt Lane' and mentions his 'last deceased wife, Charity Wyckoff;' his sons Mathew, Guisbert, Peter, John, Derrick and his daughters, Catherine, 'Widow of John Demund,' Elizabeth, 'wife of William Craig,' Margaret and Eleanor, 'wife of Peter Hammer'. In this will his wife's name was stated to be 'Charity Wyckoff', but on her tombstone and in her mother's will, and on Wychoff records, it is given as Gertrude. Evidently she went by the name of 'Charity,' which was often used for Gertrude.
After his death the farm was sold (7 Feb 1822) by his executor's to his son-in-law William Craig, who at once (7 Feb 1822) deeded it to Matthias' three sons, Guisbert, Derrick and Peter. Matthias had served as a private in the revolutionary war (as per Trenton records) but in what regiment and how long is not stated. In 1793 and 1797 he was deacon in the Bedminster Dutch Church and in 1808 and 1814 was an elder. He was a prominent man and was frequently called upon to settle estates. He had a large family of eleven children, all by his first wife, Gertrude Sutphen.
