He joined the army olf General Putnam, whose headquarters were at Princeton, NJ, at which place and at Kingston he was staitoned as a gurad on the lines, and was out in scouting parties to protect the inhabitants from the incursions of the British occupying New Brunswick in Dec. 1776 at York County, Pennsylvania. He joined the Shakers at Pleasant Hill, Mercer County, Kentucky, Mar. 1807. He and Dyna Dorland removed to at Pleasant Hill, Mercer County, Kentucky, in Mar. 1807. Samuel Banta resided at at Mercer County, Kentucky, in May. 1833.

He was a Justice of the Peace Squire John I. Banta a 1832 at Schraalenburgh, Bergen County, New Jersey. He married Cornelia Blauvelt on 29. Jun. 1836. Squire John I. Banta died in Nov. 1852 at age 61; the name on his tombstone is John Banta, Esquire.
