William Neal, one of the pioneer educators of the west end of Champaign County, was found dead in bed at his home in St. Paris Tuesday morning. while he had been in poor health for some time his condition was not considered serious and he had been around among his friends up to the preceding day. It is though that his demise was due to an attack of heart failure.
Mr. Neal, who was in the neighborhood of 65 years of age, taught school in Adams and Johnson townships for upwards of 30 years and was well and favorably known in that section of the county. About 10 years ago he retired from active work and removed to St. Paris where he since made his home. Mrs. Neal, the wife, has been dead three or four years, but three daughters remain. They are Mrs. Ira Applegate and Mrs. James Stayman of St. Paris and Mrs. W. H. Persinger of Sidney. Funeral services will likely be held Thursday afternoon and interment in St. Paris.
An obituary was printed on 15 October 1914: On Tuesday when W. H. Neal was not seen about his home by the neighbors, as was the usual custom, they notified his son-in-law, James Stayman, who went to the home and after no response could be had, a window was broken and entrance gained. It was found that Mr. Neal had died through the night. Since his wife died two years ago, Mr. Neal has lived alone. On Monday he visited his daughter, Mrs. Stayman and complained of his heart. Mr. Neal was born Mar 4, 1845 in Champaign County and passed his entire life there. In 1869 he was married to Marth J. Wooley, who died in 1876. Two daughters from this union survive. They are Mrs. W. H. Persinger of Sidney, and Mrs. James Stayman of St. Paris. Mr. Neal was married the second time to Mary L. Gibbs on Mar 19, 1879, and one daughter Mrs. Ira Applegett survives this union. Two brothers and a sister also survive. They are John Neal of Rosewood, James Neal of Palestine, and Mrs. Lizzie Wooley of Sidney. Seven years ago Mr. Neal and wife moved to St. Paris. The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church, Rev. M. F. Hawley officiating. Interment was made at Rosedale Cemetery near Carysville.
