Harvey Gearhart Moore was born on 26. Sep. 1844 at Richwood, Union County, Ohio. He was the son of
John Harvey Moore Jr. and
Martha Anne Gearhart.
During Civil War soldiers were drafted or enlisted at age 20. Harvey enlisted at 18 giving false info and re-enlisted again at age 20. He enlisted as a Private of Captain James W. Field's Company B, 86th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry at age 19, July 10, 1863. Discharged February 10, 1864 at Camp Cleveland, Ohio. It was noted that he was born in Madison County, Ohio. He gave incorrect information.
Second time he enlisted as a Private of Captain William Hunter's Company C, 12th Regiment of the Ohio Calvary Volunteers on October 10, 1864 to serve one year, discharged in Tennessee. In a note made by Isabella, his wife, "Harvey was at Cumberland Gap and helped capture John Hunt Morgan in wartime. He was helping tear down a bridge when Lincoln was shot in 1865. He was in many southern states." Harvey served in the Civil War with his brother, Hylas and was with General Sherman on his march to the sea according to family tradition. They served in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky. Description of Harvey: 5 ft. 7 1/2 inches tall, light complexion, gray eyes, light hair.
