Rolla--Few people receive a new half-ton pickup when the retire, but the Morton County Garzing Association thought Earl Milburn deserved it. Milburn, a Rolla native will be 73 on June 28, began working for the association as a cowboy back in 1948 and retired 1 April. He was surprised with the gift last week at a supper at Rolla High School. The Morton County Grazing Association leases federal land along the Cimarron River and elsewhere, from the Colorado state line to north of Rolla and land southeast of Wilburton and Rolla. Four riders, headed by foreman Bill Barnes, work cattle and maintain windmills and fences. However, Earl Milburn hasn't exactly retired, his wife Jean said: "He's been out working cattle nearly every day helping neighbors in the area." It's his life: "Those were all good years, and good people," said Milburn.

Earl Sylvester Milburn died on 18. Apr. 1997 at Elkhart, Morton County, Kansas, at age 88.

OBITUARY

Earl S."Fat" Milburn, 88, of Rolla, died April 18 at the Morton County hospital, Elkhart, after a short illness. He was born June 18, 1908 on his parents' homestead in Morton County. His parents were Pete & Lilllus (Gillum) Milburn. Fat's was a lifetime resident of Morton County and had worked for the Madador Ranch (in Texas) for four years and the Morton County Grazing Association for 30 years. He was one of the last orginial cowboys for that Association. He married Jean Biggs on May 11, 1938 in Clayton, NM. She survives. Graveside services were held April 21 at the Rolla Cemetery.

He was buried on 21. Apr. 1997 at Rolla Cemetery, Rolla, Morton County, Kansas.

Memorial services for Emma Stoner were held at the Burlington United Methodist Church at 10:30 Thursday morning, Oct 20, 1994 with Rev. Robert Spears
officiating. "I Walkedd Today Where Jesus Walked" and "Will There Be Any Stars in My Crown" were sung by soloist Rusty Sexson and the congregation sang "How Great Thou Art". Organist for prelude and songs was Billie Hinkhouse. Casket bearers were grandsons, Mike Stoner, Tom Stoner, Loren Tryon, Monte Keil, Kent Messenger and Ira Messenger. The eulogy was given by Mrs. Stoner's son-in-law, Clifford Messenger, and special memorials were spoken by her daughters, Claudine Messenger and Maxine Kindred. Interment was in the Claremont Cemetery, Stratton. Emma Fanny Milburn Stoner was born Dec. 11, 1909 in Morton Co., Kansas to Pete and Faye Milburn and grew up on a farm north of Rolla, Kansas. Emma and Galen Stoner were married on Aug. 28, 1926, and made there home in this area also, where five children were born to them. Their first child, Revah Beryl, died as an infant, then three daughters, Maxine (Kindred), Carolyn (Tryon), Claudine (Messenger), and son, Ronald. The family moved to the Smoky Angle Community south of Stratton in 1942 and then to Stratton in 1945 and soon purchased the Tom Kennedy farm north of there. Emma joined the Evangelical United Brethern Church, which later merged with the Methodist Church. She taught children's Sunday School, was active in Ladies Aid, worked in 4-H, as well as helping with all phases of farm work. She was a seamstress and made clothing for her family and others. In 1959, they sold their farm and moved into Stratton, where Galen worked for the Stratton Co-op and Emma worked in the school lunch room. Galen retired in 1970 and they moved to Grand Junction and later purchased a small property in a retirement village at Parker, AZ, and spent the summers visiting children and relatives in Colorado and Kansas. During the summer of 1976 they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary, rejoicing with most of their family and a host of friends at the St. Charles Hall in Stratton. After Galen passed away in 1979, Emma moved to Burlington, to be near her daughter and son-in-law, Maxine and Leo Kindred. She transferred her membership to the United Methodist Church and became active in United Methodist Women, the Quilters, Sunday school and church and with the senior citizens and RSVP group. For a time, she helped prepare meals at the Burlington Rest Home because she felt she had too much time on her hands. In 1989 she moved to Mesa and later to Payson, AZ where she resided until her death Oct. 15, 1994 after a short illness. She leaves to mourn four children, Maxine Kindred of Burlington, Carolyn and husband Ralph Tryon of Fort Collins, Claudine and husband Clifford Messenger of St. George, UT and Ronald and wife Evelyn Stoner of Payson, AZ, 14 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter, three brothers, Elver, Earl and Tom Milburn of Rolla, Kansas, two sisters, Alma Myers and Grace Drew of Hugoton, Kansas, numerous extended family and a host of friends and acquaintances.

Emma Fanny Milburn died on 15. Oct. 1994 at Payson, Gila County, Arizona, at age 84. She was buried on 20. Oct. 1994 at Calremont Cemetery, Stratton, Kit Carson County, Colorado.

HUGOTON - Grace Drew, 89, died Dec. 10, 2004, at Stevens County Hospital, Hugoton.
She was born Aug. 5, 1915, in Morton County, the daughter of Pete Ervin and Lilus Faye Gillum Milburn. A lifetime area resident, she was a homemaker, farmer and rancher.
On Sept. 17, 1933, she married Howard A. Drew at Hugoton. He died Jan. 5, 1974.
Survivors include: two daughters, Emma Berniece Musgrove, Rolla, and Vera Jean Stoops, Hugoton; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Laura LaRue Bressler; three brothers, Elver, Earl and Tom Milburn; and two sisters, Emma Stoner and Alma Morgan Myers.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Christian Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Greg Lindenberger presiding. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, both at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton. Burial will be in Richfield Cemetery.

Grace Mary Milburn was born on 5. Aug. 1915 at Morton County, Kansas. She was the daughter of Pete Ervin Milburn and Lillus Faye Gillum. Grace Mary Milburn married Howard Alexander Drew on 17. Sep. 1933 at Hugoton, Stevens County, Kansas. Grace Mary Milburn died on 10. Dec. 2004 her last known address was at Hugoton, Stevens County, Kansas, according to the Social Security Death Index.

Thomas Charles Milburn, 77, of Rolla, died December 6, 1998 at the Stanton County Hospital in Johnson. He was a farmer and loved the land.

He was born June 25, 1921 in the Dermont Community of Morton County, Kansas, the son of Pete Ervin and Lillis Faye (Gillum) Milburn. He went Antelope Valley School; Rolla High School and Graduated from Hugoton Hig School in 1940. He was presently a member of the Rolla United Methodist Church; Cimarron Basin Advisory Committee. He ;has served and was an officer on the following boards including District #23-Dermont Schoo; United Methodist Church; Morton County Hospital, Morton County Fair Board; Dermont 4-H Cllub leader; Morton County Extension Board; Rolla Co-operative Association; SW Kansas Irrigation Association; SW Kansas Groundwater Management-Distraict #3.

He married Dorothy Scott on July 30, 1949 and to this union were born two children, Gary James Whaley of Dallas, Texas and Kreisstine Diane (Whaley0 Fuller of San Antonio, Texas. This marriage ended in divorce in 1955 and the children took the last name of Whaley from their step-father. The children were reunited with their father in 1995 after 40 years of separation.
On Feb 1, 1959, he married Dorothy Eleanor Higgins at the United Methodist Church at Rolla. To this union was born one daughter, Shurma Rae Messenger of Hugoton and two sons, Mervin Dale "Pete" Milburn of Rolla, Jeffrey Lynn Milburn of Elkhart. All survive. Other survivors include three grandsons, Garret and Russ Messenger of Hugoton, Joshua Kreklau of Elkhart; three granddaughters, Nikki, Heather and Lacy Varner ofo Elkhart; two sisters, Alma Myers and Grace Drew of Hugoton; one brother, Elver C. Milburn of Rolla.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, Earl S. Milburn and 1 sister, Emma F. Stoner. Buried Richfield Cemetery, Richfield, Kansas.

Farrel T. Miles was born July 27, 1926, in Lewiston, Utah, to Harvey Miles and Effa Melvina (Tippetts) Miles. He married Peggy Jean Pitcher on Aug. 16, 1945, in the Logan LDS Temple. They are the parents of five sons, 18 grandchildren and three-plus great-grandchildren.

Farrel graduated with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Utah State University in Logan. Farrel and Peggy moved to Southern California in 1950 where Farrel established Miles Engineering in Beverly Hills and later in Van Nuys, Calif.

Farrel served as bishop of Hollywood Ward, Los Angeles Stake and Northridge 2nd Ward, Chatsworth Stake. He also served on two High Councils, six Stake Missions and in seven bishoprics.

Farrel passed away quickly and quietly early Friday morning, June 11, 2004, as he prepared to go to the office. He is survived by his wife, Peggy, and their family listed below:

Children and (spouses), Drew Farrel, deceased in 1982 (Linda Bowen), Gregory Lance (Connie Sessler), Kevin Sterling, Stefan Gram (JoAnn Visser) and Brett Paul (Sharon Paddy).

Miles grandchildren: Garret (Amy Mask), Eric, Robert (Melissa Roit), Julie (Mark Dunnihoo), Paul, Kellie (Daniel Wagner), Melissa, Christopher, Lindsay, Olivia, Drew and Gavin.

Fernandez grandchildren (Children of Rick & Linda (Bowen Miles) Fernandez): Adam, Leslie, Brian, Diane, Mary and Scott.

Great-grandchildren: Bailey Miles, Alex Miles, Hailee Wagner and Drew Dunnihoo (expected October 2004).

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2004, in the Smithfield City Cemetery. There will be a viewing prior to services from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 S. Main St., Smithfield. Condolences may be extended to the family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com.

He was buried at Smithfield City Cemetery, Smithfield, Cache County, Utah.
