Harpers Weekly Jun 14 1862

HON. MOSES F. ODELL.
THE HON. MOSES F. ODELL, the patriotic Member of Congress from the Brooklyn District, was born at Tarrytown, Westchester County, on the 24th of February, 1818. His family removed to New York City shortly after his birth, and here and in Brooklyn Mr. Odell grew up, receiving his education in the common schools of the city. Early in life he received an appointment in the Custom-house, where he soon proved himself a peculiarly valuable public servant, and for merit was promoted step by step till he was made Assistant-Collector, which post he held during the Administration of President Polk. Being a Democrat, when the Taylor Administration came in Mr. Odell was removed from his post and put to another desk. He was, however, shortly replaced, notwithstanding his politics, the Collector finding him indispensable. He continued to hold his place under Collectors Bronson and Redfield till he resigned, under the latter. During this long tenure of a responsible, laborious, and often irksome office, he gained and retained the esteem of the merchants of this city, and achieved a reputation for clear-headedness and the ability to transact a great amount of business, in a manner satisfactory to all with whom he came in contact, and which has made him a great favorite with the business community of New York. Under the Administration of Mr. Buchanan he held the post of Public Appraiser in this city.

Mr. Odell has always been a Democrat. In early life he was for a short time President of the Brooklyn Empire Club, and all his life he has taken a strong interest in the success of the Democratic party, though never seeking office. Last fall he was nominated, on the Douglas ticket, for Congress. The chances for his election were not good. The member of Congress from the District, Mr. Humphreys, was a Republican, and a gentleman of unexceptionable character, personally liked by his constituents; and the Breckinridge wing of the Democratic party nominated a candidate, and thus caused that horror of politicians, a "split ticket." Nevertheless, Mr. Odell was elected over both his competitors, his sterling character and great personal popularity carrying him far ahead of his ticket. He was, we believe, the only Democrat elected on the ticket.

He did not take his seat in Congress till the meeting of the extra session, on July 4, 1861. Meantime the rebellion had broken out. Brooklyn hastened to send a regiment to defend the capital and the Union; and in those first days, when Democrats and so-called Union men were still looked at with some degree of suspicion, he took his stand in a speech delivered to his constituents and to the soldiers going away to the war. The following short extract from that speech is an index to his conduct ever since. He said: "The position I stand in toward the Government and toward you, makes it right that you should know my views....I am for the Constitution of the country and for the enforcement of the laws—for the Stars and Stripes—for the flag which has protected us all. That flag has been trailed in the dust and spit on by those whom it protected. I have no apology to make for those who did this, and I have no quarter to give until that insult has been avenged. It is well known to you, gentlemen, that I was elected as a Democrat. I have been identified with that party since I came to Brooklyn—more than twenty years ago; but I have no party here to-night. I stand by the Union. I shall be summoned to Washington—I believe I shall get there [it was doubtful at that time]—and I shall give my support to any measure that will defeat the foes of the Government. I did what

I could to prevent the election of the President. I labored as earnestly against him as many of you did for him. But he was elected—legally, fairly, honestly elected President of this country. He is its President. I shall sustain the President in every thing which I believe to be right, and calculated to put down the men who have made war upon our flag and trampled it under foot....I am with you in this inspiring movement which has spread over the North. My prayers are with those who have gone forth to defend the country, and I believe and pray that God will defend them; for the right is with them, and they will prevail."

He has well kept his word. When Congress met it was expected by many who knew his peculiar experience and abilities that he would be placed upon the tariff and tax committees. This was not done, probably because the Speaker did not know him. But he was reserved for as important a work. His patriotic speech attracted attention, and, we have heard, gathered around him quite a number of Congressmen, Republicans as well as Democrats; and when it was determined to appoint a Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War, Mr. Odell was wisely selected as one of its members. Here he has labored earnestly and effectively ever since, to improve the effectiveness of the army, to expose and prevent frauds, and to aid the Government in its immense labors. We have reason to know that his conduct has secured him the affectionate regard of the President, who values his advice as that of an honest, clear-headed, and single-hearted man, such as Mr. Lincoln is himself.

Mr. Odell is not a speaker, but a man of action. He has not made a speech, in Congress, yet; but he has given all his time to the important labors of the Committee room. During his residence at Washington he has greatly endeared himself to the soldiers by his constant and personal care for their comfort. After the battle of Bull Run he looked after the sick and wounded who crowded the city, and especially those of the gallant 14th (Brooklyn) regiment, many of them young men who had grown up under his eye, in business and in the Sunday-school of the Sands Street Methodist Church, of which he has been for many years the efficient and beloved superintendent. The following paragraph from a recent number of the Washington Intelligencer shows that it is not only soldiers whom his active benevolence seeks to help:

"We referred yesterday to the commendable zeal and ability of Senator Wright in the Sabbath-school and other benevolent enterprises. It is our pleasure now to add to that worthy class of Christian philanthropists the name of Moses F. Odell, who represents the Brooklyn District, New York, in the House of Representatives, and contributed on Sunday very materially to the interests of the Sabbath-school exercises at the 'Foundry.' The accomplished wife of Mr. Odell has been a teacher of the Bible class in the same school ever since their residence in Washington."

Congressman Moses Fowler Odell was buried on 6. Jun. 1866 at Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York; lot 16552 section 55.      He died on 13. Jun. 1866 at Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, at age 48.

ODELL, Moses Fowler, a Representative from New York; born in Tarrytown, Westchester County, N.Y., February 24, 1818; completed preparatory studies; appointed entry clerk in the New York customhouse in 1845 and became public appraiser; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-seventh and Thirty-eighth Congresses (March 4, 1861-March 3, 1865); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Treasury (Thirty-seventh Congress); appointed Navy agent at the city of New York in 1865 and served until his death in Brooklyn, N.Y., June 13, 1866; interment in Greenwood Cemetery.

Charles Lee Odneal and Tudie S. Dedrick appeared on the census of 6. Jan. 1920 at Sherman, Grayson County, Texas.

Charley, as he was called, ran the grocery store for his father and was a night watchman at the flour mill. When his father died he inherited the grocery store, the house he lived in and the seven houses the Negro workers lived in. In the 1920 census he is listed as a repairman at the Oil Refinery in Sherman, TX. In 1927 his brother Harry invited him to come to McCamey, Texas and sell Chryslers. So he, his wife and two sons (Charles was now in college) moved to McCamey, Texas. He sold cars for about six months but that work didn't suit him so he went to work for the Humble Oil Co. refinery in McCamey. In 1930 Humble closed the refinery, as it wasn't profitable having to truck the oil out to the coast for shipment, and moved all the employees to east Texas. Charley was moved to Panny in the tri-city area. Later the three cities, Panny, Goose Creek and Old Baytown were incorporated into what is now called Baytown. He continued working for Humble as did two of his sons Jack and Harold. Jack was sometimes his fathers relief off his shift of fueling the ships and Harold became a welder At some time the name was changed to EXXON and is owned by Standard of New Jersey.

Earl owned a feed and seed store in Sherman TX and owned the house of his father . He also had a large vegatable garden and raised leghorn chickens. The Negros lived in houses in back of the main house and took care of the chickens. Earl’s children Billie and Wilbur lived with their Eatherly grandparents after their mother died. When Earl remarried Alberta, Billie came back to live with them and took care of her five step brother and sisters. The death of her mother was especially difficult for her. and as a result much of her Odneal memories are gone. She does remember very well the fureral. Thelma was laid out on a rolled red velvet couch and was only placed in the casket before being sealed in the wall of the Odneal Mouseleum. Billie remembers going up to the third floor of the house and watching the court house burn as a result of a mob after a Negro. The story is the Negro had raped a white woman and hid in the courthouse. The mob burned the courthouse down in order to get him to comeout. He was then dragged through the streets and lynched. This is why early records of Sherman are hard to obtain as they were burnt up in the fire.

George Conover Odneal was born Sept 22, 1846 in Moniteau Co., MO. I believe he went by Conover. He attended the Felder public school and Prairie Home College.
Although George was not yet 15 years old when the Civil War began, according to Confederate records, he was in the army from 1861 until the end. He was a private in Co. D of Shelby's Army serving in Missouri, Arkansas and Texas. Their is a good chance that he and his cousin William Jefferson were at the battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas in December of 1862. It is likely George and William Jefferson knew the James Brothers and the Youngers before they became outlaws as they were a part of Quantrails Guerrilas, a support group for Shelby's Army. He appears on a prisoner of War roll for Company's C, D & E of 9th Elliotts Regiment Missouri Volunteer Calavery. Confererate States Army, Commanded by Capt. Davenport surrendered at New Orleans, LA by Gen. E. K. Smith, C. S. A. to Maj. Gen. E. R. S. Canby U S Army, May 26, 1865 & paroled at Shreveport, LA June 14, 1865. Residence given as Cooper Co., MO. Conover had some narrow escapes, was severely wounded, and carried a piece of shell in his side for many years after the war before having it removed.
After the Civil War he spent all his life in Cooper Co., North Moniteau Township, MO engaged in farming and stock raising. On Sept. 30, 1875 Conover married Martha Jane Harris. They had four children; John Porter died at age ten, the other children, Nora Alice, Flara Mae, and Thomas Aubra all married and had families. Conover's farm was located on the corner of what is now Hwy WW and Felder Rd. Conover died April 15, 1924 and Martha died Jan. 25, 1932, they are both buried in Harris Cemetery, located 2.5 miles South West of Prairie Home, MO on Hwy W.

; real estate value 10,000.00. Harry Thomas Odneal died on 30. Apr. 1934 at age 45; suicide. He died on 4. May. 1934 at age 45.

Harry was born Feb. 1889 in Sherman, TX. He married Lelia Faulkner about 1909 and they homesteaded two sections of land in West Texas in what is now Upton County. They lived in a tent until they could build a more substantial house. Their hree daughters were all born here, Vivian (1910), Ada (1914) and Margaret, (1918). The town of McCamey was built on this land, with Harry owning several of the businesses in the town. Some of them were the Chrysler dealership and garage, and movie theater. Once while his nephews Jack and Harold were watching a western in this theater a Texas dust storm came up. The dust entered the theater through a large fan used for cooling, since this was before the days of central air. This may have been the first time real effects were used to enhance the feeling of a movie, even though it was not done on purpose, in that you were looking through real dust to see the dust of the movie. Harry was also the Lawman for the town. At this time there was no jail, so Harry would bring troublemakers to the garage, have them put their hands around a large pole, going to the roof in the center of the building, and then put the cuffs on. Next morning or whenever they were to be turned loose he would uncuff them.
The family moved southwest to Fort Stockton sometime about 1930 where they built a large two story house and Harry continued working as a peaceofficer. He hired an unempolyed artist from California that happened to be passing through to paint wildlife scenes throughout the interior of the house. The murals were quite good. In 1931 Harry became a Texas Ranger and in 1933 he was made Captain of Company B of the Rangers. He was known by his big cowboy hat and a .45 on his hip. It has been said that he was good friends of Govenor Ma Ferguson at that time and that was one reason he was put in that position. After becoming Captain he and the family moved to Fort Worth, Texas. In 1934 while riding in a Patrol Car they went over some RR tracks and he came down on his .45 with his tailbone. Perhaps they were in pursuit of someone as it would seem the car was going very fast. From that time on he was in considerable pain. On April 30, 1934 Harry could take the pain no longer and committed suicide in their bedroom. Leila heard the shot and ran upstairs but when she got there, there was nothing she could do.

He had been a peace officer since he was 19 when he became a deputy sheriff of Grayson Co., TX. Later he bought eight sections of land in Pecos Co., TX and ranched for a time but it was not long before he was serving as deputy sheriff at Fort Stockton, TX.
While still a young man he entered the Ranger service during the lawless days of West Texas. As a sergeant under Capt. Monroe Fox he took part in cleaning up the Big Bend country. Although Captain Odneal seldom spoke of the "old days" tradition has it that 16 Mexican bandits were killed in one fight in which he participated.
Captain Odneal was stationed in the Ranger oil fields during the boom several years ago.
The captain was transferred to Fort Worth in March of 1933 to succeed Capt. Tom Hickman as head of the Rangers in this district. He has livied here continously ever since.
