HISTORY OF METHODISM IN MINNESOTA by CHAUNCEY HOBART, D. D. 1887

"METHODISM IN MINNESOTA

HAMPTON, VERMILLION AND FARMINGTON, 1855-64.

The conference of 1861, appointed Benjamin Crist to the Farmington Circuit. ... During the time of the war, differences of opinion and political animosities broke up several of these classes. Brother Crist was succeeded by Brother C. T. Barkuloo. The circuit was large, too large to be traveled and cared for as it then required, and with Brother Barkuloo's best efforts the work did not grow and increase in spiritual power as he desired.

Brother Peet spent about fifteen months on this work (building a parsonage), finished up the parsonage the second years, and built up the Vermillion Circuit until it was a strong and pleasent charge. In 1863, Rev. C. T. Barkuloo, who was then living on the circuit, supplied the work, Mr Peet having been appointed chaplain a colored regiment in Louisiana. The next year, 1864, this circuit, now known as Farmington Circuit, was supplied by J. Gardner and C. T. .Barkuloo.

CLEARWATER, 1855

Revs.... , C. T. Barkuloo, ..., have labored on this charge, and these have all testified that to make Methodism the power of God to salvation more spirituality was needed; a deeper consciousness of obligation to God, in pastors and people, together with a better financial system and a willingness to sustain the cause of God.

LONG PRAIRIE, 1866

In the fall of 1867... A Methodist class was organized by Brother C. T.Barkuloo."

Loved poetry (Dad & I have several of her books)

Poems written down by Ella Barkuloo (most likely written by her), held by Richard Birkebak:

"Teaching Public School

1. Forty little urchins leaning through the door.
Pushing, crowding making a tremendous roar.
"You must keep more quiet -
Cant you mind the rule"
Bless me this is pleasant
Teaching public school.

2. Forty little pilgrims on the road to fame,
If they fail to reach it,
Who will be to blame.
High and lowly stations,
Brought together here
On a common level
Meet from year to year.

3. dirty little faces,
Loving little hearts.
Eyes so full of mischief,
Skilled in all its arts
"That's a precious darling"
"What are you about?"
Half a dozen asking,
"Please my I go out."

4. Anxious parent drops in
Merely to enqure,
Why her olive branches
Do not shoot up higher.
Spelling, reading, thumking
Those who break the rule,
Bless me this is pleasant,
Teaching public school.

Beautiful Home

1. There is a home eternal,
Beautiful and bright,
Where sweet joys supernal
Never are dimmed by night;
While robed angels are singing,
Ever around the bright throne;
When, O when shall I see thee,
Beautiful, beautiful home.
Chorus
Home, beautiful home, Bright beautiful home,
Home, home of our Savior, Bright Beautiful home.

2. Flowers forever are springing
In that home so fair,
Thousands of children are singing
Praises to Jesus there;
How they swell the glad anthems,
Ever around the bright - throne,
When, O when shall I see thee
Beautiful, beautiful home, Chorus.

3. Soon shall I join that anthem,
Far beyond the sky;
Jesus became my ransom.
Why should I fear to die?
Soon my eyes shall behold him,
Seated up on the bright - throne
Then, O then shall I see thee,
Beautiful, beautiful home, Chorus."

HISTORY OF THE Hamline University of Minnesota WHEN LOCATED AT RED WING, MINNESOTA FROM 1854 TO 1869. 1907

"WILLIAM H. BARKULOO.

William Harmon Barkuloo was born June 10th 1843, in Logan, Indiana, of Methodist lineage, and is a member of the North(crossed out) Minnesota Conference. He was at Hamline University three years from and after the opening of the school year in 1864. He afterwards took a course of lectures at Garrett Biblical Institute and since then, a period of almost forty years, he has been constantly engaged in preaching. He joined the Minnesota Conference at Centenary Church, Minneapolis in 1869. He says if the choice of a calling were once more offered him, he would again choose to be a minister of the Gospel. He comes of good American stock. His Great(hand written) Grandfather was a German and fought under Washington. He put his name down for the Union Army, but the surgeon's Certificate of Health prevented his mustering. He married Esther A. Booth, of Mansfield, Ohio September 1st, 1869. His daughter Ella was graduated from Hamline in 1893.

'I owe much of my success in life to "Old Hamline." About two and a half years, I enjoyed its blessings and associations, the influence of which has followed me all throught life. No better class of students has any school in Minnesota ever sent out to their life work than the early studnets of Hamline at Red Wing. They have entered into every callings with marked success. About sixteen of them went out as successful ministers of the Gospel. I have spent thrity-seven years in the intinerant ministry. These years of experience and toil are more valued by me than as though I had accumulated great wealth in worldly pursuits. All Hail to "Old Haline" and God speed the new'. (signed W H Barkuloo)"

Dear Sir and Bro:-
For a number of years you have gone out and in amoungst the people of Hamline in the service of our Lord and Master and the church we all love. You have supplied our pulpit and led prayer meetings when the service was much needed and you have done it without renumeration other than that which comes from a sense of duty well done.
The matter of your value to the church has frequently been commented on by the officiary and at a Brotherhood meeting a committee consisting of Brothers J. G. Johnston and J. S. Sweitzer was accorded the pleasent duty of arranging for an expression of appreciation.
In my official relation as church treasurer, I have the great pleasure of enclosing herewith the committee's report.
Very cordially yours,

MINNESOTA CONFERENCE, held at Pipestone Minnesota, METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 1917, Official Minutes. Information provided by David M. Morehouse.

"Memoirs
WM. H. BARKULOO
The Rev. Wm. H. Barkuloo was born in Logan, Ind., June 10, 1843. He was educated at the Old Hamline University at Red Wing, Minn., and at Garrett Biblical Institute. In 1869 he married Esther Booth, of Mansfield, Ohio, and joined the Minnesota Conference the same year. Their first pastoral charge was at Eyota, Minn. Brother Barkuloo spent thrity-eight years int he effective ranks of the Minnsota conference. His last charge was at Bellingham. He leaves his devoted wife and three children, Mrs. J. J. Bickerbank, of St. Paul, Minn., Paul A. Barkuloo, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Wm. C. Barkuloo, of St. Paul, Minn., who have reason to rejoise that they with us have been privileged to feel the influence of his genuine Christian life. Brother Barkuloo was a man of God. He went his way modestly and quietly, preaching the gospel in the out-of-the-way places, but with never a murmur, considering that the humblest schoolhouse appointment was an opportunity that angels might envy. And his work has been bearing fruit. There are several preachers of the gospel who point to Wm. H. Barkuloo as the servent of God who so inspired their hearts that they caught the vision of service, and gave themselved to God's work. His last sermon was preached in the Hamline Church, about five years ago. He was a great sufferer druing the last years, but he found the same grace that was sufficient for th pioneer preacher in the storms of winter on the bleak prairies was sufficient to sustain him amidst the storm and stress when the body was racked with pain, and he left a triumphant testimony of the power of Christ to save. And when the summons came;
'Tranquil amid alarms,
It found him on the field,
A vetern slumbering on his arms,
Beneath his red-cross shield.'
H. F. Ackerman."
