Burnice Ransdell Jr., 74, Frankfort, retired public health administrator, died Tuesday, October 24, 2000 at Markey Cancer Center, Lexington. He was the son of the late Burnice and Lettie Fay Sims Ransdell. A native of Harrodsburg, he grew up in Lexington, attended Henry Clay High School and received a bachelor of arts degree from Transylvania University. Mr. Ransdell, regarded by colleagues as one of the most effective and successful administrators in the Kentucky Dept. of Health, was a former vice-president of the Kentucky Jaycees and a member of the American College of Hospital Administrators, the Lions Club, the VFW, the KY Retired Teachers Assoc., and a strong advocate of the Democratic Party. After teaching in the Fayette Co. public schools, Mr. Ransdell began his career with state government in 1952 as a coordinator of social services for the state's tuberculosis hospitals. ... Before retiring in 1987 as deputy commissioner of the Ky Depet. of Mental Health, he was acting commissioner of the State Dept. of Mental Health, and a consultant to the Bluegrass Mental Health-Mental Retardation Board. Mr. Ransdell served in the Marine Corps during WWII for two years on Palau Island in the South Pacific.... He is survived by his wife of 55 years Alene Prewitt Ransdell, dtr Susan Ransdell, son Joseph Ransdell, son John Ransdell, dtr Mary Ransdell, sister Mattie Meredith, numerous nieces and nephews.
