`It is with sincere regret The Dial chronicles the death of William G. Reynolds, a highly respected resident of this city and one of the few remaining Civil War veterans.

Deceased was born near Ellenboro, this county, July 13, 1848, and departed this life at his home in Boscobel April 8, 1933, aged 84 years, 8 months and 25 days. His passing removes another pioneer settler of this section and a valiant veteran of the Civil War, who served 13 months in Co. I, 50 Reg. Wis. Vol. Inf. A greater portion of his useful life was spent in Crawford County. April 5, 1868, he was united in marriage to Emoline Drake, whose demise but a few weeks since - Jan. 12th, 1933, was a deep affliction. They engaged in farming until seven years ago when they gave up strenuous labor incident to farm life and moved to Boscobel to spend their declining days.

Nine children survive, (listed). His memory will also be cherished by 43 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren, one brother, Sam of Bremerton, Wash., and a multitude of other kindred.

A loving husband, affectionate father, obliging neighbor and true friend, his presence will be greatly missed.

Funeral services were held Monday at the M.E. church, Rev. J. T. Agema officiating and a guard of honor from John P. Blake post headed the cortege.

Burial took place in the Boscobel cemetery.'

He was buried on 10. Apr. 1933 at Boscobel Cemetery, Boscobel, Grant County, Wisconsin.

William Guthrie, (named for his step-mother's brother), was born along the Platte River in southwest Grant County, Wisconsin. He was the fifth of nine children born to his parents, George Reynolds and Sarah McCord, shortly after they moved to Wisconsin from Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

On January 28, 1865, at the age of 16, William enrolled in the Union Army for service in the `War of the Rebellion', the Civil War. He enlisted in Madison, Wisconsin for a period of one year. Being too young to fight, he was a water boy and drummer. His military records describe him as being 5 feet 6 1/2 inches tall with a fair complexion, dark hair and grey eyes. He was private in Company I, 50th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry Volunteers. After being camped at Madison for about 2 weeks, he became sick with the measles. It was very cold in Madison at that time and, after being exposed to the weather, he also caught cold. He returned home to Boscobel to recover, but was to be plagued by lung problems for the rest of his life. He returned to headquarters in Madison after about 5 weeks and rejoined his regiment. On or about the 15th of September, 1865 while at Camp Leavenworth, Kansas, he was again taken sick with `general debility' and was admitted to the hospital. Records indicate that after 20 days in the hospital there, he was placed on a hospital boat and taken to Fort Randall hospital. He remained there until his honorable discharge on February 22, 1866.

Around 1880, he made a claim for invalid pension benefits and was eventually granted benefit payments, (amount unknown). Affidavits filed by himself and others support the fact that he remained seriously affected by lung ailments after his discharge. A statement sworn by Chauncey Steele, `age 30 years, a resident of Scott in the County of Crawford and State of Wisconsin' states:
`that I know the claimant and live about fifty rods from claimant's house and I saw him after he came home from the army that he was gratly (sic) reduced in flesh and scarcely (?) able to move about. That about ten months after he came home from the Army I went after the Dr. for him and several times after wards went after the Dr. and brought medicine (?) for him. That about six years ago when the claimant was very low and I believed he was going to die I folowed (sic?) the Dr. again after the Dr. had examined claimant I asked the Dr. if he thought claimant would recover that the Dr. said claimant's loungs (sic) was badly affected and that by good care he might recover but claimant would haft (sic) to take good care of himself if he did get up and speshly (sic) when it was wet wether (sic). There has not been scarcely a week has past since the first time I saw him after he caim (sic) from the Army but I have heard him complain of pain in the loungs (sic) thus judging from these symtoms (sic) that he is troubled with loung (sic) disease.' It was said he was not able to do `one half of a man's labor in any one day'.

William married 16 year old Emoline Drake in the town of Marietta, Crawford County, Wisconsin by S.S. Ferrel. William and Emoline had 12 children between 1869 and 1894, three of whom died when young. They farmed in the town of Marietta early in their marriage, and by 1880 had moved to a farm in the town of Scott, also in Crawford County, Wisconsin. They raised small grain to feed their cattle, plus a few hogs and chickens. Emoline kept a big swarm of bees for `pin money'. Although both were hard workers, much of the day to day responsibility fell on Emoline because of William's poor health. She was a strong and willful woman who devoted much time to the smooth running of her large family. In moments of relaxation she would often sit by the kitchen cook stove and whistle or hum a tune. She would move her feet in time to the music in a kind of sit-down-dance. She once told her grand-daughter, Edith, that the tune she hummed was called `The Eighth of January'. Edith remembers that Emoline smoked a corn cob pipe filled with Indian tobacco.

After many years of labor on the farm, William and Emoline moved to a home in Boscobel, Wisconsin in 1926. Emoline became sick in early January of 1933 and on January 12 she died of bronchial pneumonia. She was 79 years, 3 months and 26 days old.
