"James Whitcomb Ross, second son of Abner L., Sr., was born in Lebanon, in 1838; he was one of the first scholars of Holbrook's Normal School. At the first call for volunteers to suppress the Rebellion, James was one of the very first to follow the drum and fife to Washington Hall, and put his name on the list; he was chosen for a second lieutenant in Company F, Twelfth Ohio Regiment; after one of the first battles in Virginia, he was elected first lieutenant; and at the battle of South Mountain he was promoted to Captain of Company H, of the same regiment. He served with honor and distinction until the very close of the war. In October, 1865, he married Miss Melsena, the eldest daughter of Peter Wikoff, of Mason, Ohio; to them was born one son, Pete Wikoff Ross. James was soon elected Auditor of Warren County, in which office he served two years, and retired on account of failing health from confinement to indoor work. He then joined Polk Wikoff in conducting one of the largest stores ever in Mason. He died in 1869, and was buried in the Mason Cemetery with military honors."

ANOTHER PIONEER GONE -- Mrs. R. B. Conover Goes to Join the Great Majority of Pathfinders Passed On. In the death of Mrs. R. B. Conover Wednesday night at her home, 1528 Asylum avenue, another pioneer has ended her long journey. Mrs. Conover, whose maiden name was Therza Rozell, was born March, 1841, near Connersville, Indiana. She was married in 1861 to R. B. Conover who, with two children, Frank of Butte, Montana, and Miss Lula, of this city survive her, one child having died in infancy, and another daughter Daisy, a beautiful girl of 20, dying some seventeen years ago.
In 1872 Mr. and Mrs. Conover came to Oregon, coming to San Francisco and thence northward by sailing vessel. She was a devoted wife and mother, and a loyal member of the Presbyterian Church. She been ailing for some time, but the end came unexpectedly at about 10 o'clock Wednesday night, when she was seized with heart failure, and passed away in a short time.
No arrangement have been made for the funeral pending the arrival of her son Frank from Butte, Montana. Chapman Scrapbook, pg. 134. [Salem newspaper -- hand-written date, Wed. Mar. 28, 1907].
