On an unknown date In 1884, he invented the first practical Bean Harvester, much the same as the one still in use, and he made the first flat divider board that was used on the Reaper. To his great disappointment he never realized any financial benefit from his invention because of his faith in a man he hired to make his machine. The original model of his Bean Harvester is in the Museum of the Caledonia Historical Society.
Philetus Ruliffson died on 27. Jan. 1909 at age 81. He died on 29. Jan. 1910 at at the home of his son Allen, Caledonia, Livingston County, New York, at age 82.

Cassius Cheselden Rulifson married Mrs. Florence Cochran in 1927. Cassius Cheselden Rulifson died in 1937. Moved to Iowa, Illinois, and finally on to Oregon. Traveled with his mother and father to the Isthmus of Panama, San Francisco, and on to OR on the ship Oriflamme. Told Mary Alice Rulifson about himself and another youngster having ten cents to spend in San Francisco on the dock. They each bought a pear; the fruit was so green they could not eat it. Mary Alice Rulifson thinks they boarder the Oriflamme on the west side of the Isthmus of Panama. Mary Alice Rulifson also believes that an uncle of Cassius Cheselden Rulifson [a brother of Bangs Penny Rulifson] and the uncle's family also came up to Portland on the Oriflamme; that the brothers disagreed seriously; and that the unknown brother went south to the Wilamette Valley. Mary Alice remembers that C C Rulifson raised Jersey cattle and draft horses on his ranch outside Carrolls Point, Washington. He leases horses to commercial fisherman who used them to haul in great seining nets from the Columbia River. With time the horses' hooves would become softened from the constant immersion in water. Her grandfater would then send the horses up to his ranch in Morrow County, Oregon, a few miles from the village of Ione. There the horses would work the wheat fields until their hooves were healed again. C C Rulifson owned a fairly large general store in Carrolls Point, Washington. The store stood partly on the shore and partly on pilings over the Columbia River. With the store there was a dock into the water; immediately in front of the store on the land ran the railroad. The river boats on their way to and from Portland stopped at the dock. Mary Alice remembers going to Portland on the Steamer Beaver. They also went by train, with the train from Seattle stopping to pick them up. Her father operated the store for his father; Uncle Dean frequently helped. C C Rulifson was known to his business associates and his friends as "Chet."

Tillamook street, who died at his home Thursday, will be held Monday at 11 a. m. at Holman & Lutz Colonial mortuary, N. E. 14th avenue and Sandy boulevard. Interment will be in Rose Valley cemetery at Kelso with Masonic services. Mr. Rulifson was born February 16, 1859, in Illinois. He came to Oregon by way of California in 1876, coming from San Francisco to Portland on the steamboat Oriflamme. In 1882 he married Sarah Alice Adams at Carrolls, Wash., where the couple lived for several years. While there he was prominent in political affairs, serving on the board of county commissioners of Cowlitz county. He was also a pioneer member of the Rulifson & McKenney mercantile firm. Following the death of his wife in 1921, he moved to Portland. In 1927 he married Mrs. Florence Cochran. He was a Mason for more than 50 years, joining in Kalama Wash. Besides his widow he leaves six children by his first marriage, Mrs. C. E. Welch, Corvallis; Grace Boehm, H. G. and R. E. Rulifson, Portland; Mrs. George L. Wolfe, Longview, and D. L. So while he was affiliated with the Methodist Church, he was not a strong church member. He was, however, a very active Mason. Reported to Johns F Rulifson 22 September 1991. Rulifson will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Nov. 20, in First Methodist Church parlors, beginning at 2 p.m. Miss Pearl F. Huls and Charles H. Rulifson were married Nov. 18, 1906, at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Huls, south of Fayette, by Rev. Weatherwax, the Methodist minister of Fayette at that time. They started farming on a 200-acre farm southwest of West Union where they lived until 1947, when they moved to their home in West Union. Four children were born to them, Ralph, Agnes, Veda, and Charles. Ralph died July 16, 1962, and Agnes on Oct. 1 1963. Veda, Mrs. Carlton Kelsey, Sarasota Fla., and Charles and family, Omaha, Neb., are expected Saturday, Nov. 19, to help make this day a memorable one. The Rulifsons also have eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A special invitation is extended to all their friends and relatives to attend, and they ask that there be no gifts. A history of West Union reports "Chas. Rulifson, the oldest member of the Lodge at 88 years, is a very active member." DoscherHJ, p 62. "At 85, Charlie Still Enjoys High Places" West Union - Charlie Rulifson has been working in high places most of his life, 85 years so far. He climbs to the top of a 40-foot extension ladder on top of his pickup truck to paint the gables of a church or a house, puts up scores of storm windows, and has been known to shingle a barn roof on Christmas day. He did at least a dozen storm window jobs last fall and painted a half dozen or so houses during the summer. Charlie is no steeplejack, he says, but climbing came naturally to him -- not because he likes it especially, but out of necessity. He was a farmer 4 1/2 miles southeast of West Union until 1947. At the age of 62, he and his wife came to West Union and retired, supposedly. Rulifson had been born on that farm. He farmed the 200 acres he owned and another 120 he leased. In West Union, Charlie had ideas far beyond the rocking chair. He bought a rundown property and fixed it up. It was their home for three years. They built a new brick house on Walnut street in 1950, Charlie doing a lot of the work himself. Over the years Charlie has bought several properties, restoring them for rental. Charlie, in his work, climbs to high places a good many younger men refuse to. Started on Farm It all started on the farm, he guesses. "Any high climbing at the farm, I had to do it," he recalls. "Very few of the hired men were able to." He climbed on barns and windmills, fixed hay track troubles. "I was the lad that always did it." Charlie is a wiry man, slight of build and slightly bent over from years of toil. He says he once weighed as much as 150 pounds, but his weight now is only 130, although he sets his height at 5 feet 8 inches. In November, 1919, a barn on the farm burned to the ground, just ahead of winter's arrival. They got the frame of the new 36 by 60-foot barn up before snowfall, but on Christmas day, there was Charlie -- up on the roof shingling alone all day. The Rulifsons had four children, a son Ralph, who died of a heart attack in 1961 [Leona Spiller Rulifson correction: 1962]; a daughter, Mrs. Robert Lohr, who died of multiple sclerosis in 1963; another daughter, Mrs. Carleton Kelsey of Sarasota, Fla., and another son, E. Charles, of Iowa City, who is a traveling salesman. Mrs. Rulifson died in 1968, but not before the couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. She had suffered a stroke in 1966. Charlie has eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Ralph, who had served as a naval officer, returned to the farm after World War II, and was successful in its operation, but eventually bought a feed business in Manchester. His widow lives there now. Charlie sold the farm in 1950. In High Places Among the high places Charlie worked on in West Union are the Methodist church and the Lutheran church. "The Lutheran church is 50 feet into the south gable," says Rulifson. "I had to put my 40-foot ladder on top of a triple box on my pickup." He also had 117 windows and the cornice to paint. The Methodist church as another challenge. He again needed the 40-foot ladder atop his pickup and when it came to the trim on the stained glass windows he set up a ladder at each end with a 2 by 6 across and a ladder up to that. How old was he then? "Well," Charlie chuckled, "I think that was two years ago." Charlie is amused that he does things that men much younger can't do because of their inherent hear of heights. "I've done much painting here in town," he said. "Just this year there was a big house. This man wanted to burn the paint off. He could burn the paint off from the lower part of it, but when he got up about eight feet he was done. "I burned the paint off the upper part of the house and painted it. He did the lower part. "He was a very fine fellow, but I suppose he was 30 years old. "I guess it's kind of a joke around town that I do high climbing." A good man like that is hard to find. "I had a house here a couple of years ago, a young fellow, 25, I guess, would put on the lower storm windows, but he wouldn't put on the upper ones. "I worked on the top of his house, two full stories with a big garret above, repairing his chimney a couple of years ago. He can't do it." A Lot of Work Charlie still does a lot of roof, shingling, and plastering. "Two years ago we had trouble with the Methodist church roof leaking. I got up on top of that to shovel snow and ice off so it wouldn't leak." Charlie's 40-foot ladder got him up part way. He set up another 14-footer to go to the top. Just last winter, Charlie says, "I bet I shoveled a carload of snow off the top of the Masonic temple." A few weeks ago, before driving to Manchester for a picnic with relatives, he dug a ditch for the neighbors who were having trouble with their drain "and saved them $45," as he put it. Charlie seldom uses any help on his jobs, "because the majority of fellows you get to help you want to talk. And I want to work and pay attention to what I'm doing." Asked what the secret of his getting to such a ripe old age, and in such good condition, is, Charlie replied: "I really think if I'd retired to West Union and sat down and not done anything ... I don't think I could have done it. Bounce Like Rubber Ball "I think being active all the time kept me strong and able bodied." Charlie has never tasted liquor or tobacco in any form. "I think it's a proven fact today," he said, "that although individuals go along through the years saying 'Smoking don't hurt me', I think that on the other hand it takes something off the end of their lives. "I'd call it just good common sense." Charlie has had four or five operations in his 85 years, but he's never had any serious illness. Ever been hurt? "No, not very badly. One time we were moving a house at the farm ... we had the building loaded on a truck. I don't remember why I was up on top of that house, but I was, and I came down all in one piece. "I was kinda bruise up. "I've always told people that if I fall I just bounce like a rubber ball." Charlie lives alone now, and does his own housework, as well as keeping the house in trim inside and out. But he says: "I dread the fact that I'm getting old and I just wonder how long I'll be able to take care of myself." He believes that one thing very beneficial has been his activity in Masonry. He took all of the degrees in 1928. "I was so taken up with the work that I was determined I'd learn the work. I learned the entire Masonic ritual and passed the examination on it in 1932. Ready for Exam "I still am authorized to teach the ritual in any lodge in Iowa." Still remember all of those thousands of words? "I'm ready to take an examination on it any day." He is a four-time past master of the lodge in West Union. He will put on two Masonic schools this winter. "It keeps the cobwebs off you brain," he says. Farming has changed, of course, since Charlie was a youth on the farm. "We put in long hours. You can go out today and do in a day what we used to take a week to do. "We kept eight horses, did most of the farming with horses. "I never had a tractor until 1937." "Rulifson believes that the best farming conditions were in the early 40s, during World War II. The 30s were the worst. "In the 30s I had an encumbrance on the farm and I didn't sell enough that year to pay the interest." Charlie has some definite opinions about the government's farm program. "I think the farm program they have now is the silliest thing that I can imagine. "For instance, you go down the road here and you'll find the government tiling land, improving land, so they can raise more. "And then you go a little farther down and you find they're paying a big price to let the land stand idle. "I can't see any sense in it. "You see it on every hand, paying these fellows so much in subsidies for crops they don't raise." Much To Do With There's a real good reason Charlie doesn't want to retire. "I don't want to retire as long as I'm able to work," he says. "I have so much to do with. I've probably got a dozen ladders and more, besides step ladders and scaffolds, to work with. "I'm like David Harum told about the dog. He said: "'A certain amount of fleas is good for a dog. It keeps him broodin' over bein' a dog.' "I've kept busy and I think it has been perhaps good for me." He does a lot of reading and watches Lawrence Welk on TV, but of television in general, he added: "I don't care for so much of this razzle-dazzle, what you call it." The interview drew to a close and Charlie got ready to go out and put up a dozen more storm windows. "I marvel at it myself," he concluded. "I used to think that when a man got [to] be 50 or 60 he was real old." Charlie was born on a farm S.W. of West Union, Iowa on December 18, 1885. He attended country school with his 3 brothers and 4 sisters. At the age of 15 Charlie moved to Juliette, Illinois, where he finished grade school. He attended high school in Juliette, during which time he worked in a paper mill. He returned home to help his father build a new barn, during which time he got a piece of steel in his eye and lost the sight of one eye. Charlie decided to remain on the farm and in 1906 he married Pearl Hulo [sic]. They were blessed with 4 children. After their oldest son returned from the navy, Charlie and Pearl moved to town, and their son took over the farm. Charlie then began his career as a painter and carpenter. Pearl passed away in 1968. Charlie continued in his new career until September of 1974 at which time he fell and fractured his hip. Charlie made his home with us until February 19th, when he was able to return to his own home. What a great day for Charlie. We will miss seeing him, but we feel proud when one of our residents return to this home. After the payment of my just debts and funeral expenses, from moneys and bonds of which I may be possessed at the time of my death, I give, bequeath and devise my estate and property as follows: 1. I give to my wife, Catherine D. Rulifson, and all of my personal property after payments are made as above stated" This includes moneys, bonds, credits and household equipment, except shop tools and safe. I further give to my wife, Catherine, my home lots Nine, Ten Eleven and the south one-half of Twelve, in Smithfield Addition to West Union, Fayette County, Iowa; and am leaving in escrow deed covering the same. All of above bequests are in lieu of dower. 2. I give to my son, Claude K. Rulifson, Eighteen Hundred Dollars, to be paid as hereinafter provided. 3. I give to my daughters, Mrs. Lida W. After premises are sold my executors shall pay to Charles H. Rulifson his equity of ten thousand dollars, and shall include him among the beneficiaries for eighteen hundred dollars, or pro rata share thereof. 5. I give to my grandson, Orrin T. DeLong, eighteen hundred dollars, as provided for in Clause (4). 6. I give to my grandson Bertram R. Olson, the sum of eighteen hundred dollars, as provided for in Clause 4; and select his aunt, Carrie Olson, to act, without bond, as custodian of his funds during his minority. She may use the funds for his education or betterment as may seem best to her. 7. I give to my grand-daughter, Evalyn Krueger, the proceeds of sale of wood lot, being North one-third of south three eights NW 1/4 of southwest quarter of Section 2, Township 94 North, Range 9, Fayette County, Iowa, and am leaving in escrow to Mrs. Lida W. Harms, of St. Paul, Minnesota, trust deed covering the same, directing her to sell the described lot and use the funds received for Evalyn's betterment as may seem best to her. No bonds required. As to the sixteen hundred dollars running to my executors, as provided for in Clause 4, I desire it to be used for erection of a monument on my cemetery lot, expenses of administration and such other expenses as are not herein provided for; any remainder may be equally divided among my living grandchildren. I appoint my wife, Catherine D. Rulifson, to be executor of my Last Will and Testament, and W. C. Harms, of St. Paul, Minnesota, to act as associate executor. W. C. Harms will act as custodian of deeds left in escrow and kept for safety, with my Will, in my safe. He will deliver deeds at earliest authorized moment. Both my executors may serve without bonds. He died on 4. Dec. 1927 at West Union, Fayette County, Iowa, at age 74.

Herman Malon Rulifson was born in Boone County near Belvidere, Illinois, February 3rd, 1853, and departed this life December 4th 1927 at the age of seventy-four year, then months and one day. He was the son of Ralph and Maria Rulifson and was educated in the public schools of Belvidere, Illinois, was a graduate of the Normal College of Joliet, Illinois, took a degree at the University of Bloomington, Illinois, and was Superintendent of Schools in Illinois and Wisconsin for ten years. On December 25th, 1873, he was united in marriage to Carrie Randall Hammond of Joliet, Illinois, who preceded him in death in March 1921. To this union, there were born the following eight children: Claude King of Galesburg, Illinois, Lida W. Harms of St. Paul, Minnesota, Charles Herman of West Union, and Elsie M. Krueger of Oelwein, Iowa; the other four having preceded him in death, Alice Rosemond, Ralph Willard, Laura Isabelle, and Frank Herbert. In April of 1881, he, with his family, settled on a farm in Windsor Township where he resided till March 1st, 1916 when he moved to his present residence in West Union. On August 15th, 1922, we was united in marriage to Catherine Des Camps Elford of Chicago. He was a man of broad understanding, being very well read, not only in current topics but on any scientific problem. He possessed a keen mind and was a man of high caliber, being a great lover of music, books and flowers. There is left to mourn this departure his wife, four children, eleven grandchildren, one great granddaughter, two brothers, Dr. Grant F. of Chicago, Illinois and Frank A. of Belvidere, Illinois, one sister, Elle F. Howe of West Union, and a host of friends. Rulifson Dies West Union Resident Reaches End of Life At Age of 74 Came Here in 1881 Long a Farmer in Windsor Township -- Survived by Four Children H. M. Rulifson, aged seventy-four died at his home in West Union at 5 o'clock Sunday Afternoon, Dec. 4, his las illness dating from September. The prospect of his death had been imminent for some weeks. Mr. Rulifson was well known in this locality, having resided in the county since 1881 and in West Union since 1916. H. M. Rulifson was born Feb. 3, 1853, near Belvidere, Boone county, Ill. He gained a degree at the university at Bloomington, Ill., and taught at Savanna, Ill. and Darien, Wis., before becoming a superintendent of school at Joliet. Mr. Rulifson came from Joliet to Fayette county on April 20, 1881, located on a farm in Windsor township, and prospered in his calling. He retired from the farm eleven years ago on account of ill health. He spent last winter in Florida in his health's interest, but gradually failed during the present year. He was married to Miss Carrie Hammond Dec. 25, 1873, in Illinois. Her death occurred March 5, 1921, after a married life of forty-seven years. He was married Aug 15, 1922 to Mrs. Catherine Marian Des Champs Elford of Chicago, whose care of him during his last days has been all that affection would dictate or strength permit. Mr. and Mrs. Rulifson were the parents of eight children, four of whom are living: Mrs. Lida Harms of St. Paul, Mrs. Elsie Krueger of Oelwein, Claude Rulifson of Galesburg, Ill., and Charles H. Rulifson of Windsor township. Two grandchildren also were reared in the home -- Orrin De Long and Bertram Olson; there are nine other grandchildren, and one great grandchild, Joyce DeLong. Mr. Rulifson also is survived by two brothers and one sister -- Dr. G. F. Rulifson of Chicago, who is too ill to come to the funeral, and Frank Rulifson of Palm Beach Fla., at too great a distance; and Mrs. Ella Howe of West Union. Mr. Rulifson has been for many years a member of the Episcopal church. He was a past grand of the I.O.O.F order, but had not been active in that order for some years, owing to deafness. He was a man of both practical disposition and clean habits. He loved the birds and flowers. The funeral was conducted from the Methodist Church at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon by the Rev. E. I. Selden.

Rulifson and W. C. Harms, executors of the above estate and make this their final report and petition for discharge and state: That Herman M. Rulifson died testate, a resident of Fayette County, Iowa on the 4th day of December, 1927. That these executors gave notice of their appointment on the 28th day of December, 1927; that thereafter they filed a list of heirs and real estate and inventory of the personal property, and the statutory preliminary inheritance tax reports. That they procured the relief of this estate from appraisement for inheritance tax purposes and that this estate is not liable for the payment of any inheritance tax. Rulifson has complied with the conditions imposed upon him by paragraph 4 of the will of decedent and paid to these executors the sum of sixteen hundred dollars ($1600.00) as provided in said will. That these executors have delivered to Charles H. Rulifson, the decedent's safe and shop tools. That Catherine D. Rulifson, the widow of decedent, has filed her election to take the provisions made for her under the will of decedent and that she has used the Sixteen Hundred Dollars ($1600.00) received from Charles H. Rulifson for the purposes provided in Paragraph 8 of the will of decedent. That said item was insufficient to pay the outstanding indebtedness together with the monument and expenses of administration and that the balance necessary to pay all of said items of indebtedness has been advanced by said Catherine D. Rulifson from the personal property given to her under the will. That the following is a correct list of the name of the surviving spouse and heirs of decedent, together with their relationship and present addresses, to wit: Catherine D. Surviving Mr. Rulifson are, his wife, Mrs. Mabel Strunk Rulifson; two sons, Raymond S. Rulifson and John Kermit Rulifson of Jamestown; two brothers, Melvin W. Rulifson of Salem, Ore., and William W. Rulifson of Mumford, Monroe county and one grandson, Robert Raymond Rulifson of Jamestown. Mr. Rulifson was born November 1, 1861, in the town of Wheatland, Monroe County. His early education was obtained at Belcoda, Monroe County, and later he attended a medical college in Lincoln, Neb. In 1881, he and his brother, Melvin W. Rulifson, operated a sheep ranch near Lincoln, Neb., and in 1888 had a real estate office in Kansas City, Mo. In 1889 he returned to Wheatland, where he engaged in farming and worked at contracting in and around Central New York until he came to this city. Mr. Rulifson married Miss Mabel Strunk on May 1, 1895, and last Sunday was their 37th wedding anniversary. He came to Jamestown in 1892 at the invitation of the late Charles H. Wicks and engaged in the contracting business. Later Mr. Rulifson worked at contracting in Sharon and McKeesport, Pa., returning to Jamestown to open an architectural office in 1903. He continued to engage in that profession until stricken with his last illness. He was a registered architect. Laura Isabelle Rulifson married Milo Olsen. Laura Isabelle Rulifson died on 4. Oct. 1919 at Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, at age 36. Obituary from West Union Newspaper 15 Oct 1919 Death of Mrs. Olson Mrs. Milo Olson, formerly of this county, died at 2 o'clock Sunday at her home in Mason City. after a two weeks illness, which began with meningitis and ended with brain fever. The remains were brought to West Union, to the home of her parents,Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Rulifson, and the funeral was held from the Rulifson home at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, conducted by Rev. William Mitcheil of Wadena. Mrs Olson. whose maiden name was Laura Rulifson spent her life in this community. San and her husband resided for some time a few miles west of West Union. leaving here about two years ago for Huron, S. D. , and had lived in Mason City for about a year and a half past. They have one son Bertram, aged twelve years. Mrs. Olson was a woman of fine character and attainments, and devoted to her family. She was a consistent member of the Presbyterian church. Mr. Olson and son returned today to their home at Mason City. At the sa.me time Mrs. Olson's brother, Claude Rulifson of Galesburg, Ill., and her brother-in-law, W. C. Harms of St. Paul, left for their homes after coming to attend the funeral. Mrs. Harms remained to visit a few days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Rulifson.
