Anna Seever married S. Duree in Virginia in 1771. They had 3 children and then moved to Lime Stone (now Maysville) Kentucky in 1877-8. They formed a small group with S. Deever's unmarried sister and two younger brothers of Anna's. This group erected a small dwelling/fort about 8 miles away from Lime Stone. A small guard stayed with the group while the building was being erected. The guard returned to Lime Stone to collect additional families. S. Duree and Anna's two brothers were out cutting wood when they were set upon by Indians. The two brothers were killed and S. Duree made it back to the cabin in spite of being mortally wounded by a rifle ball. Duree's sister went to the door upon hearing the commotion and was shot dead. Anna dragged her husband into the cabin. The Indians did not break into the cabin and departed. Duree told his wife to leave him and take their children and return to Lime Stone. Anna took her three children and fled into the woods in the direction of Lime Stone. A short distance from the cabin she encountered the guards returning with the other families. They all returned to Lime Stone to gather a sufficient force of men to drive off the Indians and bury the dead. A few years later the "brave and somewhat reckless" Captain Dan Banta met the widow Duree. He had already heard her story and was attracted by her bravery. He courted her and she stood by him all during their marriage.
