A memorial service for Wayne "Duty" Rowe, Jr. will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, 1302 A Avenue with Rev. Dr. Susie Cashion, pastor, officiating.
Duty passed away Tuesday, July 31 with his family by his side.
Private family burial services will be held in Highland Cemetery under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home.
Duty was born in Meers, Oklahoma on December 8, 1929 to Wayne and Idell Ferguson Rowe. He attended Cache High School, Cameron University, and Oklahoma State University (then Oklahoma A & M) where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954 before returning to Meers where he was a third generation rancher on the Rowe's U2 Ranch. He married Shirley Stovall on July 14, 1957 in Lawton.
He served the cattle industry in numerous capacities. He was president of the Oklahoma Cattlemen?s Association, a director of the American National Cattlemen?s Association, and a regional vice president of the National Cattlemen?s Association. He was appointed to the National Livestock and Beef Board by the United States Secretary of Agriculture. In 2004 he was named Cattleman of the Year by the Oklahoma Cattlemen?s Association.
Duty was a devoted member of the Lawton community and worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life here. He was appointed to the board of Comanche County Memorial Hospital in 1965 and served for 20 years. He was chairman of the board during the last eleven years of his tenure. He continued to serve the hospital as a member of the foundation. His passion and life-long goal was to help create a state-of-the art health care facility for the people of southwest Oklahoma.
Duty was elected to the office of Comanche County Commissioner in 1985 and served for ten years. Duty also served as chairman of the Cameron Foundation, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Lawton Chamber of Commerce, and the Comanche County Industrial Trust Authority. He served as a deacon and an elder in the First Presbyterian Church. Duty took pride in his volunteer work with the Meers Fire Department.
Duty was a devoted husband, father, brother and friend and will be greatly missed. Survivors include his wife, Shirley; daughter Cindy Rowe Zelbst and her husband John Zelbst, Meers; daughter Stacey Rowe McQueary, Springfield, Missouri; two sisters, Louise Rowe Green and her husband John Ray Green of Duncan, and Sally Rowe Ziegenfuss and her husband Paul of Tulsa; three grandchildren, Clay Rowe Zelbst, Kelsey Lynn McQueary and Taylor Rowe McQueary.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
