J. LYMAN SNYDER-One of the leading merchants of Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, J. Lyman Snyder, of Eldredsville, is also active as a dairyman and farmer as well as being prominent in the civic life of his community and county.
J. Lyman Snyder was born at Elkland Township, Pennsylvania, on May i8, I873, a son of Christian and Alice (Bahr) Snyder. Christian Snyder, who passed away in 1923 spent his life as a farmer, being a member of a family established in Pennsylvania by Adam Snyder, a native of Bavaria who migrated to the United States in 1836. Another member of the Snyder family, Nicholas J. Snyder, served in a volunteer regiment of the Pennsylvania infantry during the Civil War. Alice Bahr Snyder, wife of Christian Snyder, passed away on July 16, 1873.
After attending the public schools of Forksville, Pennsylvania, and graduating from the community's high school in 1892, J. Lyman Snyder became a school teacher and spent the following eight years, from 1892 through 1900, in that capacity. Late in 1899, however, Mr. Snyder purchased the general store at Eldredsville, which was established in 1877 by G. A. McIlwain, and, in igoo, he resigned as a teacher to take over the management of the establishment which he has operated during the past forty-odd years under the name of the Snyder General Store. In addition to his merchandising, Mr. Snyder, who is also a director of the Sullivan County Telephone Company, owns and operates a farm of one hundred and fortyone acres, practicing general agriculture and specializing in dairying, having his pastures stocked with a herd of thirty-one Holstein cattle. A member of the Democratic party politically, Mr. Snyder is deeply interested in municipal and county affairs and gives generously of his time and talents to public service, having been a justice of the peace since I923 and at the present time serves as a school director and a member of the Sullivan County Draft Board. Mr. Snyder attends the Methodist Church in the vicinity.
J. Lyman Snyder married, at Millview, Pennsylvania, on April 16, 1896, Sara Molyneaux, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Eleanor (Huckel) Molyneaux. Mr. and Mrs. Snyder are the parents of three children: 1. Kenneth Lyman, a graduate of the Estelle High School and associated with his father in business. He married Lela Norton and is the father of two children: Kenneth Lee (deceased) and Helen Elizabeth. 2. Elizabeth Eleanor, a graduate of the Mansfield State -Teachers College and Bucknell College with the degree of Master of Education; she has devoted herself to education, having taught for fourteen years at Wellsboro. 3. Alice Louise, a graduate of the Mansfield State Teachers College, who married Ralph Monroe Loomis, a wholesale meat dealer; prior to her marriage she taught four years in East Smithfield High School.
