Morillian Wilson Sortore married Alice Norton, daughter of Francis Norton, on 17. Oct. 1866. Morillian Wilson Sortore was Grocery Store Operator at Belmont, Allegany County, New York. He was Superintendent of Cemetery; The Town Cemetery. Interments were early made in various localities. Many of the older citizens believe that the first burials were in the old burying-ground of the Dea. Harry Davis farm south of Belmont, and it is the opinion of the veneralbe Jesse Sortore, that Deacon Davis' father was one of the first there buried....In 1873 a vault was constructed at an expense of $500, and by 189\79 nearly $2,000 had been expended in the purchase and fitting up of the grounds, which still continue to receive proper attention, and show the tasteful skill of Mr. M. W. Sortore who has been a very efficient superintendent. At Amity Twp., Allegany County, New York. He died on 13. Dec. 1917 at Allegany County, New York, at age 74. He was buried at Forest Hills Cemetery, Belmont, Allegany County, New York.

He was discharged because of tuberculosis contracted during his enlisment on 5 May 1865. He received a pension of $30.00 per month for his services in the Civil War. Thomas Wakeley Sortore began military service on 29. Dec. 1863 at Elmira, Chemung County, New York; Thomas W. Sortore served as a Private in Co. I, 141 Regiment, New York Infantry. He was mustered in a Elmira, New York of 29 December 1863. He was described as being 5 feet 7 inches tall, having a light complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. Thomas was discharged with a certificate of disability because of Tuburculous contracted during his enlistment on 5 May 1865. He was Farmer on 29. Dec. 1863 at Amity Twp., Allegany County, New York. With Co. I, 141st Regiment, New York Infantry on 29. Dec. 1863 at Amity Twp., Allegany County, New York. With Co. I, 141st Regiment, New York Infantry, discharged due to tuberculosis contracted since his enlistment, he was admited to the hospital 28 June 1864. He first was admited to the hospital in Nashville, Tennessee for scurvy on 5. May. 1865 at New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana. He married Phylanina Davis c 1870. Mar. 1823. William M. Sortore Sr. was lumberman and farmer. He was buried at Fairlawn Cemetery, Scio, Allegany County, New York. William owned and operated the original homestead of his father. The house he built on the land was still standing in 1964. He was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. William was also an
avid abolitionist leaving his church in 1860 because of their stand on slavery. He was a member of the underground railway hiding as many as 10 or 12 slaves in his house at one time. One of these slaves was George Harris who would be the model for one of the major characaters in 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'. Operated Undergroung Railroad Station; Arch Merrill in The Underground and Freedom Road say that William Sortore's station (according to the Allegany County Historian William Greene was in a big barn still standing on the family farm about two miles south of Belmont) was linked with the one in Friendship and the one in the village of Short Tract operated by minister, Alanson A. Richmond. This would suggest that Almond Station was connected with another route, perhaps the station operated by Thomas McGee on the McBurney property between Hornell and Canisteo. Again interestingly enough, McBurney himself came to his area with slaves. He did not keep them long, however. William Still of Philadelphia mentions "trains from Adams County (Pennsylvania) to Harrisburg to Canada via the Susquehanna Valley" but does not pinpoint the stations.

As is almost always true about these stations, there is very little in writing about Sortore's operation. He is breaking the law and "the least known the best" to him, and as were men like Calvin Faribanks, he felt he was obeying a moral law. The fact that the 1850 Compromise made everyone guilty of breaking the Fugitive Slave Act subject to heavy fines or impresionment, seeded to encourage the traffic. Aech Merril describes Sortore's children going to the barn to find evidences of nights journeys with tired horses and wagons showing the dirt of hard driving on country roads. Neither they nor his neighbors were ever told the reasons why, though they must have guessed.

Sortore, who died in 1863, sired fourteen children, tow of whom served in the Civil War, and he also served with the group espoused by A.N. Cole whom the Allegany History describes as "holding radically anti-slavery opinions." He died on 21. Jun. 1864 at Belmont, Allegany County, New York, at age 63.
