Sallie Stagg was born October 31, 1836, near Harrisburg, KY and passed from this life at Aulne, KS Feb. 27, 1923, at the ripe age of 86 years, 8 months and 27 days. She was united in marriage to Jacob Carney, April 8, 1854. To this union were born two daughters and three sons. The husband and daughters have preceded her to the better world. The sons are J. H. Carney living near Peabody, KS, W. H. Carney of Aulne, KS, and John Carney of Carlton, KS. On Nov. 5, 1868 she was married to W. C. Gilliland, who has been her faithful companion for 55 years. One daughter and two sons were born to this union, Frank Gilliland of Eldorado, KS, Charles Gilliland of near Peabody, KS, and Mrs. H. D. Wilson of Rustan, LA, who with the husband still survive her, also a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and friends. "Grandma" as she was known to all, was a sweet and lovable woman. She dearly loved her children and her children loved her. They were always fir!
st in her thoughts and she loved to have them near her. In speaking to a dear friend a short time before her death she said " I have no choice." "I love them all alike." Although handicapped by deafness her memory remained clear until the last. She chose her own text and songs to be sung at her funeral. She united with the Methodist church early in life and lived a righteous life until she was called home. The funeral service was held at the Aulne Methodist church, Friday afternoon, March 2nd, conducted by Rev. Henry T. Davis, assisted by Rev. R. W. Kohr of Peabody, KS. Burial was in Prairie Lawn Cemetery.
