Don Albert Starry was born on 11. Jan. 1897 at Ely, Linn County, Iowa. He was the son of
Joseph Albert Lacock and
Albertine Bishop. Don Albert Starry was adopted by Emma J. Starry after the death of his father c 1905. He was graduated in 1918 at Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Linn County, Iowa. He began military service at World War I; Don served as a Sergeant with Company C, 329 Battalion Tank Corp AEF during World War I. He married
Edith Sortor, daughter of
Frederick Sortor and
Ida Loretta Horstman, on 25. Dec. 1920 at Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas. Don Albert Starry began military service bt 1926 - 1940; Don served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Kansas National Guard. He began military service bt 1940 - 1946 at World War II; Don served as a Colonel in the Army Air Force during World War II. He died on 7. Nov. 1984 at Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas, at age 87. He was buried on 10. Nov. 1984 at National Military Cemetery, Fort Leavenworth, Leavenworth County, Kansas. Don enlisted in the tank corp and caugt the tail end of World War I in
France. When he returned home he went to work for Dr. Helms, who
started Goodwill Industries. From there he went to work for Marshall
Fields Department Store and eventually with Kraft Cheese Co. After the
birth of their first child Don and Edith decided that they would like
to rais there family in Kansas. In Kansas Don went into the real
estate business with his brother-in-law, Ralph Sortor. With the crash
of 1929 the bottom went out of the real estate business so he went to
work for a newspaper and then into the furniture business. He had
remained with the National Guard and was called back to active duty
for World War II. He served in Washington, D.C. and retired out as a
Colonel. After the war he returned home and to the furniture business
where he became part owner with the Anderson family.
