Brazoria Oakie Bennett daughter of James Madison and Maranda C. Dye Bennett was born 23 Feb 1864. Her unusual name was given to her because she was born while the family camped near the Brazos River, as they were returning from a trip to Parker County, Texas. She married Jasper Jeff Robins Caldwell (b. 06 Mar 1861 in Dallas County, Texas) on 03 Apr 1883 in Dallas County, Texas.

Oakie and Jeff attended the Tripp Baptist Church. They were cotton farmers and apparently quite successful. At one point they owned over 400 acres but lost most of it after 1920 during the depression , when cotton prices fell disastrously.

"Oakie" was a midwife and was something of the community nurse. She never became sick herself. She was so successful in bringing people through typhoid fever epidemics that even the doctor would come by to get her to help. She nursed many people through the 1918 flu epidemic. She also served at the first President of the Long Creek Cemetery Association.

She was an excellent seamstress, made her own soap, gardened and canned all their vegetables, had a hen house with about 50 hens, raised and slaughtered calves and hogs, and got money for Christmas by selling half a dozen turkeys each year.

Jeff and Oakie had four children; Sara Elizabeth, Robert Benjamin, William Carson and Rachel May Caldwell. In addition to these they took in at various times numerous children, who at one for one reason or another were in need of care and mothering, a total of up to 25 in all. These included; Oakies younger twin sisters,Minnie and Maggie Bennett; grandniece Evelyn Wilson (daughter of Jonathan Buckalew and Daily Violet Bennett Wilson), nieces Essie Florence and Rosa Jacobs (daughters of Samuel Benjamin and Florence Vitula Bennett Jacobs); and grandchildren; Albert Lawrence, Richard Edwin, Walter, Gerta and Stella Mae Gray (children of Alfred King and Sara Elizabeth Caldwell Gray).

From Unknown Newspaper Feb 2, 1910: GREAT-GREAT-GRANDMOTHER Mrs. Cornelia Simmonds Dies at the Age of Ninety Six - Husband Survives Cornelia S., the wife of Joseph Simmonds, for fifty-five yearsa resident of Brooklyn, died yesterday of old age at her residence, 476 Twelfth street. She was 96 years old and was a great-great-grandmother. Until she was taken Ill two weeks ago, Mrs. Simmonds had been remarkably well and active forone of her many years. She was up bright and early every morning, and always took a great interest in the household doings around her. The last time she was out of the house was the night after Christmas, when she went with her daughter to see the Christmas tree of her great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, who is in his eighty- fourth year, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs Joseph N. Chapman, with whom she made her home; twelve grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The funeral services will be held this evening at the late residence and will be conducted by the Reb. Dr. JohnMoore, pastor of Mrs. Simmonds. Edward Benjamin Bennett was born on 8. Jan. 1879 at Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. He was the son of Isaac Bennett and Mary Kelly. Edward Benjamin Bennett married Anna Mary Utter, daughter of Sylvester Utter and Maria E Banta, on 23. Mar. 1898 at Newfoundland Methodist Church, Franklin, Sussex County, New Jersey; by Rev Milton E Grant. Edward Benjamin Bennett died on 5. Dec. 1934 at Goshen, Orange County, New York, at age 55. He was buried at Warwick, Orange County, New York. 1910 Census, he and Annie are living in West Milford. Surrounding them are Sidney Utter and his family ( Along with many other Utters nearby), John H Montross and his wife Lousia, and James H Weeden with his wife Catherine Widowed Daughter in Law Ester and grandchild Eunice. Unknown Newspaper, 6 Dec 1934: Edward B. Bennett died suddenly at the Goshen Hospital yesterday morning from ablood clot. He had been at the hospital since the morning of November 18, whenhe suffered a broken arm in an auto accident on Denton hill on Route 17. A chonic arterial condition aggravated by the accident and the shock prevented him regaining the strength necessary before leaving the hospital. Mr. Bennett was born at Brooklyn on Jan. 8, 1879, a son of Isaac Bennett and Mary Kelly. For anumber of years he had been a resident of this town and had been employed in the shops of the L. & H. For some time past he had also been carrying the mail between this village and New Milford and had conducted a road stand at his home on the New Milford road. He married Annie Utter whose death took place in 1922. Surviving are eight children: Harold, at home; Edna, wife of Seely Weeden of Warwick; Wilfred of Middletown, Edward of Sussex, Inez, wife of Walter Morrisof New Milford; Hubert of New milford, Kenneth, now in a C. C. C. camp at Sloatsburg, and Ronald at home; also by seven grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. A. H. Shuart of Suffern, N. Y. Funeral Services will be held at the late home at two o'clock on Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Seely Quackenbush. Interment will be in Warwick Cemetery.
