According to the 1860 Census of Empire Township of McLean County, IL, Ellen Stewart is listed as a member of the John Downing household. She was age 16 and was born in Scotland. Apparently she was not related to William or Margaret Stewart also listed in the 1860 census because neither of them were born in Scotland.

According to the 1870 Census of Shoals Creek Township of Newton County, MO, Ellen was listed as 28 years old and was born in Scotland. She was buried at Union Chapel Cemetery, McDonald County, Missouri.
