In the late winter and early spring of 1831, a number of clerks were appointed to copy the old patents into record books as required by the Act [Pg 86] of 1793. One of the clerks so appointed was William Augustus Weaver (1797-1846), a former naval officer. He said that all of the clerks were housed in a barn of a room, without seats, entirely unheated in the depths of winter, at times with snow on the ground. Captain Weaver asked Craig that they be provided with fire and said he "was denied rudely and churlishly." He next asked Secretary Livingston, who then came to the Patent Office, indicated where stoves were to be put, and provided the necessary funds to Dr. Craig. Craig refused to provide the stoves, even after being ordered to do so by the Secretary of State and provided with the necessary money. He dismissed three copy clerks for not performing their work well under these conditions.

FORT BIRD. After the battle of Village Creekqv in May 1841, Gen. Edward H. Tarrantqv ordered the construction and garrisoning of a fort near the site to protect the extreme northwest corner of the Texas frontier. Fort Bird (or Bird's Fort), constructed by a hundred volunteers of the Fourth Brigade of Texas Militia under Maj. Jonathan Bird in September and October 1841, consisted of a blockhouse and several smaller buildings enclosed in a picket stockade. Bird's company and that of Capt. Alexander W. Webb occupied the fort until March 1842, when it was apparently abandoned. The Sniveley expeditionqv was disbanded at Fort Bird in August 1843, and in September the fort housed a council between representatives of the Republic of Texasqv and nine Indian tribes. Fort Bird subsequently became the site of the Tarrant County community of Birdville, now part of northeast Fort Worth. In Arlington a stone marker, seven miles to the south, commemorates the fort.

Mesquite, Tx. April 8- The following persons have died in and near Mesquite within the past 12 days. Mrs. J. L. Hall and 2 children, Mrs. J. a. rice, Tom Quinn's 2 children, George Quinn's child; T. J. Moon, John Brisendine and A. W. Webb, making a total of 12 deaths. With the exception of A. W. Webb, the deaths resulted from what is pronounced meningitis or spotted fever. There are several more cases and this town is extremely exercised on account of it. Some four or five families have left town. Physicians have stated it is not contagious.

Long Creek Cemetery and Association said goodbye to a dear friend Nov. 28.

Alfred David Webb, great grandson of Capt. A.W. Webb, an old Texas pioneer and one of the original settlers of the community of Long Creek, passed away at his home in Mesquite.

Webb worked hard all his life to keep the memory of the ancestors of Long Creek alive. Several years ago, when he was diagnosed with ALS, it seemed that Webb’s biggest desire was to be given enough time to have Long Creek Cemetery in Sunnyvale designated as a Texas Historical Cemetery. July 18 (Webb’s birthday), the Texas Historical Commission signed the Affidavit of Dedication fulfilling Webb’s dream.

Webb fought a courageous three-year battle with ALS and was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. No matter how bad his conditionwas, he wanted to be part of the work at Long Creek Cemetery. Webb was extremely proud of his family’s heritage and of his great-grandfather’s legacy in giving a part of his land for a cemetery and school in the community of Long Creek in 1874.

Webb served as a president and trustee of the Long Creek Cemetery Association for 2004 and 2005. He often talked about how his great-grandfather and the families of the past would be proud of the work being done to honor their memories. He was especially proud of the recent placement of the permanent flagpole to honor our veterans, the Texas Historical Cemetery designation and the 2004 agreement between Long Creek Cemetery and New Hope Funeral Home to provide lifetime maintenance, among other benefits, to the cemetery. To Webb, being a part of these projects was his way of helping to prepare for the future of a place he loved so much.

In the time I knew Webb, I came to know the three things he cared for most were his family, friends and the Long Creek Cemetery. We all became better human beings the day he came into our lives. I know I will miss our spirited debates the most.

We laid our friend to rest among his ancestors Nov. 30 on the historical grounds at Long Creek Cemetery. Now it is up to each of us to continue Webb’s work and make his dreams our own. Rest well, my friend, you will surely be missed.

Chapel services were held Tuesday for Daniel Alexander Webb, 78, of 1907 Hickory in Dallas County, at Dudley M. Hughes Funeral Home, Revs. R. W. Deyo and A. M. Witter officiated with burial at Long Creek Cemetery in Mesquite.
A retired farmer, he had lived in Dallas County all of his life.
Mr. Webb is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cora D. Webb and six sons, O. D. and Clinton E. Webb of Mesquite, R. E. and Luther Webb of Dallas, R. C. Webb of Kingsland and A. B. Webb of Glendale, Ariz.
Other survivors include dive daughters, Mmes. James F. Qualls, J. E. Frazier and Clarence E. Landers, all of Dallas; Elvis Ottwell of Mesquite and L. H. Morris of Downing, Calif; 30 grandchildren and 28 greatgrandchildren.

He was buried at Long Creek Cemetery, Sunnyvale, Dallas County, Texas.
