Catherine Yates was born on 4. May. 1836 at Augusta, Hancock County, Illinois. She was the daughter of Christoper E. Yates and Catherine Couwenhoven Van Horn. Catherine Yates married Patterson F. Harry on 6. Jul. 1858 at Carthage, Hancock County, Illinois. Catherine Yates died on 20. Jul. 1888 at Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, at age 52. Article in the Daily Nebraska State Journal, Saturday July 21, 1888.

The first fatal accident on the Rapid Transit railway occurred yesterday morning at half past nine o'clock about 300 feet north of the Salt creek bridge on north fourteenth street. Mrs. P.F. Harry, a woman a little past middle life, stepped on the track in front of the approaching motor to avoid a plunging horse in the road, and was instantly run down. She died in less than an hour after the accident.

It is difficult to give an exact account of the cause of this lamentable affair. At 8 o'clock last night the coroner's jury began an investigation under the direction of Sheriff Meliek, Dr. Shoemaker having been called out of the city. The jury was composed of R.B. Graham, N.C. Broek, Neal Johnson, L.K. Jenny, W.M. Herdman and Alba Brown. The following witnesses were examined during the evening: H.C.Mc Arthur, E.M. Allen, D.B., B.F., Mrs. B.F. and Nettie Ryman, B.F. Brew, James Malloy, C.H. Kirkpatrick, S.P. Munn and Dr.Hart.

There was so much confusion after the accident, and it came about so suddenly, that few of the witnesses had a distinct recollection of what had really happened. On material points contradictory statements were made by witnesses who had no intention of perverting the truth, and the work of the jury was therefore of unusual difficulty. The main points upon which there is no controversy are that the dummy train was running north at the usual rate of speed. A short distance beyond the Salt creek bridge. H.C. Mc Arthur and E.M. Allen were encountered, driving a single horse. The animal was afraid of the motor, and plunged into the ditch at the side of the track. At about the same instant Mrs. Harry stepped from the road over the first rail and was struck by the dummy.
She fell under the train and the wheels passed over both thighs, crushing the flesh and bones but not lacerating the skin except on the right limb, which was torn open. The face was bruised severely and one hand was cut.The engine was stopped before the second drive wheel had reached the woman and the train crew and passengers crowded around to give such assistance as was in their power. It was first thought that the lady was fastened under the wheels, but she was soon extricated. Kind hands then lifted her to one of the seats of the car and she was taken a short distance south to the home of D.B. Ryman. Here a mattress was brought out to the track and she was carried to the house and given all the attention possible. Messengers were sent for her husband and children and Dr. Hart was called. Mrs. Harry was conscious and spoke a number of times concerning the accident. She said that she was afraid of the horse, and thought that she would be able to clear the track before the dummy came up to her. When the doctor arrived she was dead. His examination showed that the shock was the immediate cause. Although she was fearfully injured, there had not been enough loss of blood to cause death. The testimony varies with regard to the relative positions of the engine, the horse, the woman and other means in the immediate vacinity. Some witnesses testified that the body was dragged a distance of fifteen feet. The engineer of the dummy is positive that he stopped in four feet after applying the brake, and it was applied immediately when danger was sighted. M. Mc Arthur and Allen stated that the woman was not between them and the dummy when their horse went into the
ditch. A passenger testified that when his attention was first drawn to the front end of the train the woman was stepping onto the track from the east, and was about ten feet in front of the engine. About fifteen feet behind her was the rearing horse, which she was evidently trying to avoid. The physician was positive that the body had not been dragged along the ground. It was further explained in justification of the engineer that his view of the road was obscured by a load of hay that made it impossible to see the trouble in advance until he was upon it.

After hearing the testimony the jury decided that in view of the importance of the case and the rather conflicting nature of the statements presented a thorough investigation would be proper, they adjourned at 12 o'clock until 10 o'clock this morning.

Mrs. Harry was fifty-two years of age. She lived with her husband, a carpenter, in their new house in Belmont. The couple have five daughters and two sons, all living in the city except one daughter whose home is in Denver.

The funeral will probably take place tomorrow.

Yates married Catherine Couwenhoven Van Horn, daughter of Rev. Abram Van Horn Jr. and Anna Covenhoven, on 6. Jan. 1819 at Fultonville, Montgomery County, New York.
Christoper E. Yates was shown in the census on 17. Sep. 1850 as a farmer.

Christoper E. Yates and Catherine Couwenhoven Van Horn appeared on the census of 17. Sep. 1850 at Hancock County, Illinois,
; real estate value 21,000.00.
Christoper E. Yates was shown in the census on 10. Aug. 1870 as a land agene "reting."

Christoper E. Yates and Catherine Couwenhoven Van Horn appeared on the census of 10. Aug. 1870 at Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois,
; real estate value 2,000.00 personal property 1,000.00. Christoper E. Yates died on 24. Jun. 1883 at Fowler, Illinois, at age 85. Christopher E. Yates is listed as an early settler of Hancock County (Nauvoo) following the Mormon's departure in Gregg's History of Hancock County - Page 959. According to the 1874 Historical Atlas of Hancock County he came to Nauvoo in 1832 predating the Mormons.

He commented in 1834 about the court. A certain jury got "hung" under a cottonwood tree which had been appropriated for a jury room. Mr. Constable Duff was deputed to watch them - they couldn't agree. One of them said he was going home but Duff said he couldn't go until he whipped him. He did and the jury was still hung. The guy tried to leave again and was whipped again until a verdict was rendered. (page 420-1 in History of hancock County IL 1889 by Thomas Gregg).

C. E. Yates owned a plat of land next door to John Yates in Appanooce Township, Hancock Co, ILl. in 1859. It was his father.

Ireland was seen as the birthplace on the 1850 census, and NY on the 1880 census. He is listed as C. E. Yates on the 1880 census.

Christopher owned "some of the finest specimens of petrifactions and aboriginal curiosities in the county" according to the 1874 Historical Atlas of Hancock County.

Christopher tried to remain neutral during the high tensions of the Mormon movement in Nauvoo. He personally believed the Mormons to be an inquitous people whose practices and teachings were dangerous to the best interests of the commonwealth. He did not, however, believe in mob violence. He was appointed by Governor Ford to arrest Joseph Smith which he did and took him to Carthage where he was later murdered by the mob. Because of his stance he lost considerable property by the hands of "wicked incendiaries". This information came from the 1874 Historical Atlas of Hancock County.

Christopher was, according to the 1874 Historical Atlas of Hancock Co, an aide-de-camp for Governor Ford and was instrumental in pursuading the Governor to not issue his proclamation of extermination.

Christopher was a strong Democrat and very much against monopolies. He was a real estate dealer in Nauvoo City.

John Putman Yates was born on 12. Feb. 1825 at New York City, New York County, New York. He was the son of Christoper E. Yates and Catherine Couwenhoven Van Horn. John Putman Yates married Cloe Ann Josephine Henry, daughter of Milo Henry and Chloe Ann B. Osborn, in 1853 at Madison, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. John Putman Yates died on 30. May. 1894 at Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois, at age 69. He died on 30. May. 1895 at Ceresco, Saunders County, Nebraska, at age 70. John's middle name has been seen as Putnam and Pulman, but most of the references just show JP Yates. In the 1874 Historical Atlas of Hancock Co, it is listed that John P Yates came to Appanoose Township, Hancock County in 1834 making him one of the very first settlers (with his parents).

John's plat is shown on the plat map from 1859 in Appanooce (?) Hancock Co, IL. It is next door to C.E. Yates, his father Christopher E. Yates.

John's middle name is seen as Putnam or Putnaman in other family trees such as the Broderbund WFT Vol 5, Ed 1, Tree#3981.

John had a farm hand at his farm at the time of the 1870 census named Frederick Hager from Switzerland (he was 22). In 1874 he owned land on the northwest corner of section 33 in Appanoose Township.

John was an early settler of Ceresco, NE. In the Centennial issue of the Ceresco newspaper the following was written regarding some of his influential opinions:

"On June 10, 1886 the Townsite Company bought the original 160 acres of land where part of the present community is located for a total of $3000. Another difference of opinion developed when the location of the main street was discussed. J. P. Yates wanted it to run east and west past his farm home, the only home on the new town site. His position prevailed, and the post office was moved.

Yates also attempted to convince railroad officials that the depot should be built on Main Street. Those responsible for its construction believed otherwise and built it three blocks south of Main Street. That decision once again caused the railroad to be a major factor in the development of Ceresco because it influenced the location of the business section of the town. The core of the business section is three blocks south of Main Street and the main street of Ceresco runs north and south and is not Main Street."

In 1887 JP Yates owned the feed stable in Ceresco as seen in the 1887 Business Directory:

Contractor Gilbert Rouse
Ceresco Hotel A. Andrus
Livery & Feed Stable J. P. Yates.
