George is the son of Tunis H Vandeveer and Susan P Vedder born 24 January 1842 at Raritan, New Jersey George enlised as a private in CoK, First Iowa Vol infantry, on April 24, 1861, serving three months He was mustered out when his term expired and enlisted in Capt Kittle's Company A, 15th Regiment, Iowa Vol Infantry, 12 February 1862 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa for a period of three years According to George's Military records from the National Archives he was mustered in at Keokut Iowa on March 14 1862 On 28 May 1863 George was listed as a deserter from a march to Mechicsburg, Mississippi and returned 17 November 1863 It was later learned that he was a straggler and captured by Confederate forces on 15 June 1863 at Deer Creek, Mississippi Then taken to and confined at Richman, Virginia from June 24 to July 2 1963 Then paroled at City Point, Virginia on 8 July 1863 and reported at Camp Parole, Maryland on 9 July 1863 After that he was at Benton Barracks, Missouri where he was again absent without leave on 30 August 1863 and was arrested and returned 23 September 1863 to Camp McClellan, Davenport, Iowa as a straggler / paroled prisoner of war On 28 October 1863 George was forwarded to the Regiment at Vicksburg, Mississippi, where he rturned 19 November 1863 George was tried and sentenced by General Court Martial to forfiet all pay and allowance from 29 May 1863 to 19 January 1864 also the sum of $10000 to pay for a Springfield Rifle Musket, and $2278 for accoutrements and amunition Under General Order # 191 Series 1863 War Department, on 19 February 1964 George was mustarded out and received $6807 George reenlisted on 20 February 1864 at Vicksburg, Mississippi as a Private in Company A, 15th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Veteran He served untill he was mustarded out on 24 July 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky George and family moved to the Greeley County area in 1889 On 3 April 1864 George married Mary Carpenter at New Brunswick, New Jersey while still serving his second enlistment and had a son George C on 5 Jan 1865 George was out of the Service in July 1865 He and Mary had two daughters named Grace on 1 August 1866 and Mary on 15 August 1868 How this marriage ended is not known but George remarried to Alice Lugenbell on 14 June 1872 They had eight children 1890 Census Special Schedule- Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines, and Widows, Ect in Logan township of Greeley county, Nebraska, George F Vanderveer listed three times; (1) private in Co 'K' 1st Iowa Inf from 25 April 1861 to 25 August 1861 serving 4 months (2) private in 'A' Co 15th Iowa Inf from 10 January 1862 to 10 February 1864 serving 2 years and 1 month (3) private in 'A' Co 15th Iowa Inf from 10 February 1864 to 4 August 1865 serving 1 year, six months and 10 days The mailing Postoffice was Enfield, Greeley county, Nebraska.
