OLD TIMER HENRY BUCKLES
Henry Edward Buckles is now on his thirtieth year of employment with The Union Pacific Coal Company at Reliance. He is known to most of us as "Buck", "Harry", or "Sheriff."
"Buck" is an old-time baseball player, and said he thought it was time to quit when his first grandchild was born in 1927.

His first employment with the Union Pacific was in 1920 when he started as steam fitter foreman remodeling the roundhouse at Rock Springs.

Early the following year, Tom Bainbridge, then construction supervisor for the Railroad between Ogden and Rawlins asked "Buck" to become a permanent member of his force head quartered at Green River as a maintenance mechanic. Soon after, the railroad business hit a slump, and Harry decided that he had better tie up with something having more employment stability and accepted Tom Foster's invitation to work at the Reliance coal mine of The Union Pacific Coal Company. Buckles' first job was as pipe man under Matt Marshall, mine foreman at old No. 1 in Reliance. Tom Foster is now retired and lives in Rock Springs, and Matt Marshall resides in Salt Lake City, Utah.

At this time, a steady year-round job was an innovation for Buckles since he had played both semi-pro and professional baseball in the Western Association, Western League and independent leagues since 1905. He switched back and forth from manager to catcher, dependent upon the expedience and which paid the most.
In 1905 he played pro ball under the Western Association banner for the Springfield, Missouri club, in 1906 under the Western League banner for the Pueblo, Colorado club, which incidentally was managed by Sallee, the former manager of Chicago and the National League Club at Boston. Until 1909 "Buck" caught for the independent club of Cripple Creek and Telluride, Colorado, then going to Pittsburgh, Kansas and Joplin, Missouri as manager under the Western League Association. The Joplin club was sold to Muskogee, Oklahoma, which he managed until 1911. "Buck" said he didn't like the new arrangement and jumped his contract to manage independent teams in Flagstaff, Arizona and Las Vegas, New Mexico, until 1915. "Buck" said he missed his big chance in 1909 when an injured arm prohibited him from fulfilling an option with the St. Louis Americans.

After 1915 he gave up baseball as a full-time vocation and learned the steam-fitting trade while employed at the Utah Copper (Arthur Plant) at Salt Lake City, Utah, where he remained until 1919 with brief employment at the A. S. and R. smelter at Salt Lake City.

He continued with summer baseball after 1915, however, playing at Salt Lake City, Rock Springs, and Reliance until 1927. When asked why and how he happened to come to Rock Springs, he smiled and said he came to play baseball for the old Rock Springs Lumber Company and incidentally managed the Rock Springs Plumbing Company (a subsidiary) for Henry Utzinger, then manager of the Lumber Company.

"Buck" said there are still quite a few old-time ball players around Rock Springs and nearby with whom he played. Some of them are: Mike Maher, present Sweetwater County Sheriff, Henry Carr, retired miner, Rock Springs, "Doc" Gaston, working with the Union Pacific at Green River. Andrew (Ding) Spence, Mine Foreman, Winton, Wyoming. Claude Hiner and Dick Haag, Superior, Wyoming. D.O. Clark, Tom Lavery, Deputy Sheriff, Superior, Wyoming, Howard McComas, retired Old Timer, Salt Lake City, Utah, Bob Reay, presently employed as a mine inspector by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Denver, Colorado. Bill Treseder, Deputy U.S. Marshal, Salt Lake City, and Emil Droege and "Boots" Dankowski of Green River, Wyoming.

"Buck" was born on a farm near Sedan, Kansas, June 5, 1884, moving to Colorado Springs at 6 years of age, where his father engaged as a contractor and prospector in the mining game. He attended both grade and high school in Colorado Springs, Colorado, marrying Sarah Ellen McConaghy, September 6, 1906.

Mrs Buckles' father was manager and owner of an investment company in Colorado Springs for many years and traveled extensively as a mining engineer.

Mr. and Mrs. Buckles have five children: Ione, now Mrs. Rene Jacobs, Kremmling, Colorado, Harry, formerly with Patton's Third Army in Europe and now in service overseas in the Pacific, Rachel, Mrs. Carl Jorgensen, Pinedale, Norma, Mrs. Bob Gamble, Burntfork, and John Warren, in the hotel business in La Jolla, California. There are seven grandchildren.

"Buck" said he has the best wife in the world, saying she has never complained in all of the ups and downs of their life together.

Henry Edward Buckles is a SAFE workman, having never suffered a lost-time accident.

Henry Edward Buckles was my father so I have a more complete history of him. He was born June 5, 1884 in Sedan, Kansas. When he was a boy of 6 his parents moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he attended grade school and high school. As a young man he played professional baseball in Colorado Springs, and Pueblo. Later he was manager of the baseball team in Joplin, Missouri. In 1905 he played pro ball under the Western Association Banner, for the Springfield Missouri Club. He missed his big chance in 1909 when an injured arm prevented him from fulfilling an option with the St. Louis Americans. He gave up baseball as a career in 1915 and learned the steam fitting trade while employed at Utah Copper. He moved to Rock Springs, Wyoming in 1919. In 1920 he moved to Green River, Wyoming where he was a steam fitter for the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1921 he moved to Reliance, Wyoming, where he was employed as a plumber for the Union Pacific. He remained in Reliance for the rest of his life. He was deputy sheriff for nearly 30 years and was special agent for the Union Pacific during the war years guarding the Union Pacific payroll and other duties that went with being a special agent. He was secretary-treasurer of the United Mine Workers Local 905 for 25 years. He retired in 1952. He wintered several winters in California but didn't like the hustle and bustle of the city. He preferred Reliance where he said, "even the dogs know me." He knew everyone and everyone knew him. He never met a stranger. Just before his death he said, "I don't have many riches to my name but I do have many friends , and that is far more important to me." He died October 17, 1954 at his home in Reliance, Wyoming, of a sudden heart attack.

History of Ione Belle Buckles Jacobs
Written by Ione Belle Buckles Jacobs
This was in the Middle Park Times, August 20, 1981.

Ione Jacobs regularly attended the Senior Citizen's meeting and nutrition dinners up to about a year ago. She has been unable to attend recently, but is kindly remember by all. Mrs Jacobs presented the group with the following sketch of her life history, which was read at the Senior Citizen Nutrition Center dinner on August 11, 1981.
Ione wrote extensively for the Middle Park Times ( Colorado) for many years and her many friends want to extend a wish for many happy returns on her birthday.
I was born in Colorado Springs at the Deaconess Hospital ( no longer in existence) on August 3, 1908. My father was Henry Edward Buckles. He was born in Sedan, Kansas and came to Colorado with his father at the age of 15 to prospect for gold.
My Mother was Sarah Ellen McConaghy, whose father was general superintendent for Woods Investment Company, who owned the Cripple Creek and Victor mining fields. She was born in Robinson, Colorado, which is now completely covered by the tailings of the Climax Mine.
My father then became a professional baseball player. In those days, salaries were seldom paid except by the larger cities. He played for Muskogee, Oklahoma and Tulsa, Oklahoma. In those days, baseball strikes were unheard of and Mother told of watching Dad have a whole month's salary fined away because he argued with the decisions of umpires. Dad knew his baseball rules and was usually right but this didn't stop the umpire from fining a player who dared to argue with him.
Dan and Mother moved back to the western states and Dad began to do assessment work by contract for absentee owners. Mother became ill and the doctor advised Dad to take her with him on his next trip. Dad bought a covered wagon and a team which consisted of a big black mule named Jumber and a horse called Dexter. The horse had gotten into loco weed and was completely unpredictable, but it was the only team which Dad could find.
We were gone for many months and had many weird and exciting adventures. The trip took us from Silver City, New Mexico, to Prescott, Arizona and back, and while the details are engraved on my memory, this article is too short to relate them all.
We lived in many places during the ensuing years and I attended many schools. We finally settled down in Reliance, Wyoming. I was the oldest of five children and had to help with the younger children since my mother was never strong.
I married Rene L. Jacobs on May 5, 1927, in Manila, Utah and after a brief honeymoon in Cora, Wyoming, we went to Laramie, Wyoming where my husband filed on a homestead of 640 acres, a grazing section. It was quite a job to fence this and we lived on the place until we proved up on it, which took three years. We had three children, two boys and a girl. All of these children were born at home and in Laramie. We sold the homestead and moved to Boulder, Wyoming where we leased a ranch and spent the next several years there.
We moved to Colorado in 1947 and to Kremmling in 1948. Donald and Jean both graduated from Kremmling Union High School before it became West Grand High School. My husband was a meat cutter for Brown's until we moved to Buena Vista where we spent the winter and then moved back to Kremmling where he cut meat for Dave Sailor.
I was a telephone operator and bookkeeper for an independent telephone company in Pinedale, Wyoming, during World War II. I worked as a secretary for a lawyer in Pinedale and when we came to Kremmling, I worked as a telephone operator, then in The ASC office and later became a secretary for the Grand County Extension Service, a position I held for 14 years. Then, I resigned and went to work for the Middle Park Times as a staff writer and Photographer. I resigned in 1973 to be with my five grandchildren, daughter and sons of my daughter Jean, whom we had lost in a car accident in 1966. My husband passed on in 1968 and my mother in 1969.
I wrote a column for the Middle Park Times for 17 years, had written for the Rocket and Miner, in Rock Springs, Wyoming, and the Pinedale Roundup, in Pinedale, Wyoming.
I love Kremmling and the many friends I have throughout both Grand and Summit Counties.
I have been active in Eastern Star, V.F.W. Auxiliary and am now a member of the Kremmling Senior Citizens.
I love to play bridge and spend time writing poetry and articles and a few stories. I plan to stay in Kremmling for the rest of my life.

Ione Belle Buckles was born on 3. Aug. 1908 at Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado. She was the daughter of Henry Edward Buckles and Sarah Ellen McConaghy. Ione Belle Buckles married Rene Leo Jacobs, son of James Houston Jacobs and Amy Sophia Tabor, on 5. May. 1927 at Manilla, Daggett County, Utah.

The interment will be in the Steenbergen Cemetery, where in 1878 he purchased a lot twenty-six feet square and, at the cost of $2500, prepared it for the burial of himself and family, placing in the center a vault for the reception of the bodies of himself and wife.

The life history of John Buckles is an interesting one and a bound autobiography was published in 1897. When but three months old, his father moved to Logan County, and he was reared to manhood in this unbroken country, in the forest close to Lake Fork. In 1847 he married the daughter of a neighbor, Esther J. Scroggin, and to them were born four children, of who three sons survive, Elias B. and John M. of Mt. Pulaski and Derius of Niantic.

Mr. Buckles early engaged in farming and in stock raising and was very successful, accumulating during his long life a large fortune, represented mostly in Logan County land. Mr. Buckles was one of the most prominent figures of the old settlers' reunions, being one of the few "snowbirds" remaining to tell of the great snow of the winter of 1830-31, and over ten years ago was awarded the gold cane at the Atlanta fair for being the oldest settler present who lived on land homesteaded from the government.

He was buried at Steenbergen Cemetery, Mount Pulaski, Logan County, Illinois.

In 1822, when John Buckles was three weeks old, his parents left White County, Illinois, to find and make a home in that part of central Illinois now known as Logan County. John was the third child, and on this journey was carried in the arms of his mother, who rode on horseback. The distance was about 150 miles as the crow flies. The hardships of such a trip are unknown to most people of this day.

At that time there were only six families living within the present boundaries of Logan County. John's father, Robert Buckles, was a man of iron mold. Without the education of schools, he answered clearly all the questions that pertained to his business and life. At the outbreak of the Black Hawk War he was one of the first to enlist, and bunked with and fought side by side with Abraham Lincoln.

John's mother, Mary ("Polly") Birks Buckles, was one of the uncrowned heroines of history. She was the mother of fifteen children. The family residence was a mud-daubed cabin. In this for many years she did all the cooking before an open fireplace, made all the clothing for her family from the raw materials, and when her husband was absent from home at some distant market, or at war, she would fell the trees and cut the wood for use during the cold winters. It was a new land upon which the Buckles babies first looked out. Small growths of trees skirted the streams of water, and the wide prairies, reaching out in every direction to the horizon, were seas of grass and wild flowers. Wolves howled, foxes stole and wildcats screamed. Great herds of agile deer moved gracefully hither and thither, and countless thousands of wild chickens made the prairies vocal with their thrummings in the early mornings of spring.

And there were ‘coons in those days. Later in his life, John Buckles said: "Well do I remember the winter I captured thirty of these midnight travelers, and the day I received my first money--fifteen dollars in silver--for their hides. It was one of the happiest events of my life." He attended school altogether about one year. The house was made of logs, with the ground for a floor, split logs for seats and the children's knees for desks.

In his early manhood he assisted his father in driving hogs to Racine, Wisconsin, and sheep to St. Louis, Missouri. In his twenty-second year he helped a neighbor drive a herd of cattle to the New York City market, and again in the following year, 1845. It was he who led the largest ox before the drove. The time required for the round trip was 130 days--one hundred in going and thirty in returning. His pay was twelve dollars per calendar month. Such experiences cultivated his inbred industry and thrift, taught him independence of judgment and self-reliance, and developed his sagacity, courage and force.

By commendable methods as farmer and stockman, he accumulated good property and lived a long and useful life. He was an open foe of the organized liquor traffic, a helpful friend of our college and a sincere disciple of our Lord. His life is a heritage to his children and his children's children.

John A. Buckles, 92, Died Sunday; Pioneer Resident

Services Held Tuesday at Schahl Funeral Home

John Andrew Buckles, residing on North Belmont Street, Mount Pulaski, Illinois, a great many years, and one of the city's best known aged residents, died at 6 a.m. Sunday, May 2, 1948, in the Deaconess Hospital, Lincoln, Illinois, where he had been a patient almost five weeks. His health had been failing for several months. He was aged 91 years, 2 months, and 14 days.

Mr. Buckles was born Feb. 18, 1857, on a farm about two miles southwest of the Mount Pulaski public square, on the place now occupied by the John Bates family, a son of Jeremiah and Mary Copeland Buckles, pioneer residents of this community. His grandparents came to Mount Pulaski township several years before the city was founded in 1836. After attending school in his home surroundings, he devoted his time to farming.

In Mount Pulaski, on Feb. 5, 1880, he married Miss Lemyra Jane Mier, a daughter of George and Rebecca Laughlin Mier, who were also pioneer settlers in this area. Following the wedding, Mr. and Mrs. Buckles started housekeeping in the home where he was born. They then located in Lake Fork, where he was postmaster and merchant. After farming west of Mount Pulaski for a number of years, they moved into the city, where he was identified with the business interests for a time. They also lived in Kenney and Decatur before retiring and locating at the present family home. His wife preceded him in death Dec. 11, 1932. During the past two years part of his home has been occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Amos Tyler and family. Mr. Buckles was a member of the Christian Church.

A reader of the Chicago Tribune for a long period of time, he made daily trips of eight blocks to the post office to get his paper and other mail, as long as his health would permit. Being quite a reader, he kept up to the minute with the news of the day, and although advanced in years, took much interest in the big league baseball news.

Decedent is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Charles Kemmer and Mrs. Zolla Hukill of Mount Pulaski; two sons, Aaron Buckles, Webster City, Iowa, and Orville D. Buckles, Evanston; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Peter W. Buckles, Mount Pulaski; and a sister, Mrs. Martha Scroggin, Webster, Mo.

The remains were removed to the Schahl Funeral Home, where funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, conducted Rev. Carroll Langston, pastor of the Christian Church. Appropriate piano music was rendered by Mrs. Frank E. Turley. There were many beautiful floral tributes.

Burial was in the Mount Pulaski Cemetery. The pallbearers were Amos Tyler, M. J. Schafer, Edward Michel, Austin Schaffenacker, Ennis Downing, and George Underhill.

JOHN BUCKLES IS DEAD

Retired Farmer of Mt. Pulaski Dies After a Brief Illness

John Marion Buckles, a wealthy retired farmer, died at his home in Mt. Pulaski at 5 o'clock Tuesday morning. Mr. Buckles loaded a car last week with building materials for his Minnesota farm and contracted a cold, which developed into pneumonia. He had been confined to the house since last Thursday. His death came as a shock in the Mt. Pulaski community, in which he was well-known and had many friends. A little over a year ago he built a handsome modern house in Mt. Pulaski and had made his home there ever since. He was in the prime of life. His wife, who was formerly Miss Alice Rankin, survives him. Mr. Buckles was born March 16, 1858, and was at the time of his death aged 51 years, 11 months, and 20 days. He was a son of the late John Buckles.

He was buried at Steenbergen Cemetery, Mount Pulaski, Logan County, Illinois.

Living the quiet life of the agriculturist, conscientiously and ably performing the daily duties which devolved upon him, the years passed and John Marion Buckles wrote upon the pages of life's history an honorable record which causes his memory to be cherished by all who knew him. He had a wide and favorable acquaintance in Logan county, where he always made his home.

His birth occurred in Mount Pulaski township, March 16, 1858. His parents were John and Esther Jane (Scroggin) Buckles. Although nothing is definitely known concerning the founding of the family in this country, it is determined from the disposition and character of their descendants that the ancestors of our subject were akin to the sober-minded Pilgrims of New England or the industrious Puritans of the middle and southern colonies. "They were a substantial, religious, industrious and self-reliant people," writes a contemporary biographer. "His immediate ancestors were good representatives of the average men and the energetic, strongminded middle class who settled the wilderness of the Prairie state. They belonged to a family who were never reduced to a state of poverty and who have never acquired great riches, although they have always been comfortably situated according to the times as far back as tradition extends."

The first of the name of whom we have definite record was John Buckles, who is thought to be of English lineage. He was born in Virginia, in 1782, and married Anna Vandeventer. Their children were Robert, Abraham, Abigail, Sarah, Thomas, Andrew, William, James and Washington, four of whom were a born in White county, Illinois, when this state was still under territorial rule. In 1822 John Buckles became a resident of Logan county and ten years later removed to McLean county, residing near the village of Le Roy until his death in 1842. His wife passed away in 1857.

Another of the great-grandparents of John M. Buckles was Jeremiah Birks, who was born in Georgia and married Elizabeth Brown, by whom he had eight children, Polly, Rial, Riley, Levina, David, Rolland, Sarah and Betsey. His second wife was Rhoda Collins, daughter of Hugh Collins, and their six children were Isom, Sarah, Riley, Ann, Permelia and Richard. Jeremiah Birks removed to White county, Illinois, in 1812, and four years later went to Missouri, but in 1822 returned to Illinois, settling in Logan county, where he lived until his death.

Robert Buckles, grandfather of John M. Buckles, was born in Tennessee, April 29, 1796, and with his father came to Illinois when the state was largely a wilderness. In 1818 he wedded Mary (Polly) Birks, who in 1812 had accompanied her parents to White county, Illinois. When they removed to Logan county in 1822 there were only six families living within its present boundaries. Many Indians still inhabited the state and the forests and prairies were the haunts of wild beasts and of wild game. Robert Buckles was fond of hunting and was particularly skillful with the rifle. The family met the usual experiences and hardships of frontier life. Mrs. Buckles did all the cooking in the open fireplace, made all the clothing for the family from the raw material, and when her husband was necessarily away on long trips taking stock to market she would split the wood for the fireplace. The death of Robert Buckles occurred when he was seventy years of age and twenty-three years later his wife was laid by his side in Steenbergen cemetery, where the words "Father" and "Mother" upon their tombstones indicate the affectionate remembrance of their children. They had a family of fifteen sons and daughters: William R., Jeremiah B., John, Elizabeth, Levina, Andrew, Peter, Chalton C., Mary, Robert, Wiley, Henry H., Sarah J., Elmira and Lucinda M.

John Buckles, father of John Marion Buckles, was born in a small log cabin in White county, Illinois, October 7, 1822, and three weeks later his parents removed to Logan county, the father erecting a cabin in the forest near the stream now known as the Lake Fork ditch. Roaming over the prairies and through the woods, he spent his boyhood days and learned to use the rifle to good effect, his prowess being indicated in the many coons, prairie chickens and other game which he killed. His educational privileges were extremely limited, probably covering not more than a year altogether. In school he sat upon the log bench with the ground for a floor, whip the knees of the pupils served as their desks. It was thought that the only thing necessary for instruction for the boy was arithmetic and his real training came to him in the school of pioneer experience -- a school that develops force and foresight, strengthens courage and resolution, cultivates sagacity, teaches independence of judgment, promptness of action and anticipation of danger -- in fact, it brings forth all the qualities of mind necessary to a frontiersman or a successful trader. In 1846 he was employed by John Slaughter to aid in driving cattle to New York and for this service he received twelve dollars per month. A similar trip was made the following year, one hundred days being required on the outward journey and thirty days on the return. Previous to this he had assisted his father in driving hogs to Racine, Wisconsin, and sheep to St. Louis, Missouri, for Chicago at that time had not become recognized as a stock market.

On his return from New York in 1847 John Buckles wedded Esther J. Scroggin, a daughter of Carter T. Scroggin, who was born in Kentucky in 1796. When fifteen years of age he went to Gallatin county, Illinois, and later married Phebe Shelby, who had settled in Pope county with her parents a few years before. In 1828 Mr. Scroggin and his wife removed to Logan county, where he built a log cabin and began the development of a farm. He and his wife were devoted members of the Baptist church and he was a firm supporter of democratic principles. He was of Scotch parentage and his wife of Welsh descent. His death occurred in 1859 and Mrs. Scroggin passed away in 1876. Their ten children were Leonard K., Mary A., Russet L., Humphrey, Esther J., Sarah E., Carter T., Pleasant M., Thomas J. and Ellen C.

A few days after the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. John Buckles they removed to a small frame house, which he had built -- one of the first frame buildings in the country. It stood on a tract of forty acres, three miles southwest of Mount Pulaski, which had been entered by him in 1843 at a cost of a dollar and twenty-five cents per acre. He made the rails that fenced the land, the shingles that covered the house and, in fact, all of the improvements upon the place. In limited financial circumstances at the outset of their married life, they achieved success in the course of years, their land grew in value and in time they came to be recognized as among the most substantial citizens of the county. From time to time Mr. Buckles added to his land and as opportunity offered secured the comforts of the older east. Clapboard roofs, a fire-place, the walls of which were made of clay, hickory bottom chairs, a slab table were all features of the pioneer homes. As there were no gristmills corn was ground in a hollowed out block, honey and maple sugar served for sweetening purposes and corn husking was one of the favorite amusements of the people. All clothing was homemade, tallow candles were generally used and, in fact, the settler had to provide almost all of the necessities of the household. As time passed on John Buckles began raising and dealing in cattle and in time became one of the most prominent stockmen of this section of the state, shipping thousands of cattle and hogs to different markets throughout the entire country.

At the age of nineteen he became a member of the Christian church, remaining one of its loyal advocates and liberal supporters from that time forward. He has been interested in every department of church work and in 1890 he donated two thousand five hundred dollars for the founding of Eureka College for the education of ministers. Until 1875 he was a firm advocate of republican principles but in that year became a stanch prohibitionist, supporting the party which upheld his opinions concerning the temperance question. A biography written of him in 1897 said: "He is of a robust constitution, invigorated by long outdoor occupation, rigid temperance and orderly habits. In all business transactions he is and has been just and impartial. His friends are innumerable, made as fast as acquaintances, and whenever a name is added to his list it is taken therefrom only by death. Though nearly seventyfive years of age, he still assists in driving stock and makes one daily trip to the city of Mount Pulaski, a distance of three miles." His wife was born in Logan county, February 29, 1828. Her duty in girlhood was the spinning of seventy cuts of wool per day or in weaving cloth from early morning until late at night. Always a lover of the beautiful in nature, she has ever cultivated fine flowers, has done much fancy work and has secured an excellent collection of beautiful shells and rocks on her travels in this country along the seashore.

Unto Mr. and Mrs. John Buckles were born four children. Elias, born in 1848, was married in 1868 to Betty Dyer, and they became parents of ten children. Elias Buckles is now in the grain business, his residence being near the old home farm. Derias, who was born February 18, 1850, is an extensive stock-dealer and shipper of Niantic township, Macon county. Phebe C., the only daughter, born in 1851, was married in 1851 to Louis Phipps, who took his own life probably in a fit of temporary insanity. His widow in 1876 became the wife of Ode Turley, and to them were born two children, the surviving child being Elmer, who owns and occupies a good farm in this county. The death of Mrs. Turley occurred in 1889. John Marion Buckles was the youngest son of the family.

When success had crowned his efforts the father allowed himself the privilege and pleasure of travel and, accompanied by his wife, made various trips to different parts of the country, visiting the expositions at Philadelphia, New Orleans and Chicago in 1876, 1885 and 1893 respectively. In 1894 he visited the Pacific coast and previously had visited various noted winter resorts of the south. The commodious two-story brick residence which Mr. Buckles erected in 1864 is still one of the finest and most substantial farm residences of the county. The place which John Buckles has ever occupied in public regard is a most enviable one. His name is associated with all that is honorable in individual relations and in citizenship and his business integrity has never been questioned. He has thus provided for his family not only a handsome competence but also that good name which is rather to be chosen than great riches.

The youthful days of John Marion Buckles were not unlike that period in the lives of other farm boys. When age and strength permitted he worked in the fields and was trained to all the practical and arduous duties connected with the cultivation of the crops. In his early boyhood he attended the district schools arid afterward received the benefit of instruction in the Lincoln high school. Subsequently he spent two years as a student in Notre Dame University and when his education was completed he returned to the farm with his father. After his marriage he assumed the management of the home place, consisting of six hundred and sixty-six acres of rich and productive land. He was a grain farmer, devoting his attention largely to corn. Acre after acre was planted to that cereal until the stretch of well kept fields formed a sea of billowy green. Soil and climatic conditions being favorable, and intelligent discernment being brought to bear in his labors, he won success in his undertakings and continued to engage in farming until April, 1909, when he took up his abode in the handsome new residence which he had that year erected, at the corner of South Spring and Marion streets in Mount Pulaski. As the years passed and he prospered he made judicious investment in property until he possessed many landed interests.

On the 24th of December, 1879, Mr. Buckles was united in marriage to Miss Alice G. Rankin, who was born in this county in 1860 and is a daughter of Isaac N. and Nancy (Heaton) Rankin, early settlers of Logan county. Her father devoted his attention to farming for many years but afterward became a merchant of Mount Pulaski. He was a Kentuckian by birth, while his wife was a native of Missouri. Their family numbered five children, including Mrs. Buckles, who, since her husband's death, has continued to occupy the handsome new residence which he erected and which is one of the finest homes in this part of the county.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Buckles held membership in the Christian church, taking an active part in its work and contributing liberally to its support. Mr. Buckles was also a loyal member of the Modern Woodmen camp and the local lodge of the Odd Fellows society, while his political allegiance was given to the republican party. He never allowed the accumulation of wealth in any way to affect his relations toward those less fortunate and he enjoyed the respect of all who knew him. The character of the individual is determined by his utilization of opportunities, his employment of his powers and his fulfillment of his obligations to his fellowmen, and in these respects Mr. Buckles at all times measured up to the highest standards. His death occurred on the 8th of March, 1910.
