The executrs were his son Johannes, his friend Aert Van Pelt, son of Petrus, and his daughter Sarah Covenhoven. The witnesses were Petrus Van Pelt, John Van Kirk Van Nuys, yeoman, and Nicholas Covenhoven, Esquire. Garret Couwenhoven died on 17. Nov. 1783. His estate was proved on 5. Feb. 1784.

He was the son of Nicasius Van Kouwenhoven and Elsje Staats. He lived all of his life in Brooklyn, Kings County, NY and was an extensive land owner. John Couwenhoven married Catharina Remsen, daughter of Rem Remsen and Dorothy Lott, c 1730. In 1775, one of the defenses of this city was erected on the hill now known as Fort Greene Park: this plot was then owned by John Covenhoven, his son Rem, and Caspar Wooster, and was known locally as Covenhoven Woods. In his will dated Aug 28, 1775, John Covenhoven of Brooklyn, Kings County, mentions his wife (but not by name); his sons Rem, Nicholas, and John; and his daughters Dorothea, wife of Leffert Lefferts, Catharine, wife of Abraham Luqueer, Elsie, and Dinah Covenhoven. It was witnessed by Johannes Vanderveer, Simon Lott, and Engelbert Lott. John Couwenhoven died on 1. May. 1778 at age 69. His estate was proved on 29. May. 1778.

Joseph Couwenhoven left a will on 24. Dec. 1800 at Franklin Twp., Somerset County, New Jersey.

In his will, dated Dec 24, 1800, Joseph Covenhoven of Franklin Twp, Somerset County, mentione his sons John (eldest), Joseph, Garret, Jeremia (youngest); and his daughters Elizabeth, Elsie, Mary, and Ellen. The executor was his son John, and the witnesses were Robert Boggs, Sarah Thompson, and Ann Dunham.

He wrote a codicil on 14. Oct. 1811; he revoked some clauses of the preceeding will due to the fact that his son Garret was then dead. The witnesses were William P. Deare, Benjamin Runyon, and Robert Boggs. He died on 6. Apr. 1814 at Bound Brook, Somerset County, New Jersey, at age 74. He was buried c 7. Apr. 1814 at Wells Farm, North Brook, New Jersey. His estate was proved on 23. May. 1814.

The following day he was buried in a vault in Collegiate Church Cemetery, then on Houston Street between Forsyth and Eldridge, but in 1868, his remains were removed to Cypress Hills Cemetery in Queens County.
