Harold England Killed Tuesday In Chicago Plant

Son of Mrs. Tillie England Is Victim of Accident

Harold England, a native of Mount Pulaski vicinity, who had been employed in Chicago for about 25 years, was killed at 8:10 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, 1948, in a factory accident at the plant of Bethlehem Steel Co. His mother, Mrs. Tillie England, left for Chicago immediately upon receiving word of her son's untimely death.

Harold England was born on July 31, 1902 on a farm near Mount Pulaski, a son of John and Tillie Horn England. He attended the Mount Pulaski schools, and many years ago went to Chicago to work. In that city on June 13, 1925, he married Miss Hester Showalter.

Decedent is survived by his wife, and one daughter, Lois, of Chicago; mother, Mrs. Tillie England, Mount Pulaski; one brother, John England, Chicago; and a half-sister, Mr. Huber Zimmerli of San Pablo, California.

Following funeral services in Chicago Friday afternoon, the remains will be brought to Mount Pulaski that evening and taken to the Schahl Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 19, conducted by Rev. Ray O. Zumstein, pastor of the St. John's Lutheran Church. Burial will be made in Mount Pulaski Cemetery.

He was buried at Mount Pulaski Cemetery, Mount Pulaski, Logan County, Illinois.

JOHN C. ENGLAND DIES IN TEXAS

MOUNT PULASKI, Mar. 31 - John C. England died Saturday morning, March 29, in a hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas, according to a message received by relatives on Saturday evening. Mr. and Mrs. England went south last fall to pass the winter and news of his short illness and sudden death was a shock to his friends. His wife and two sons were at his bedside when death came which was caused by a paralytic stroke. Mr. England was widely known and a life-long resident of Mount Pulaski Township. He was raised on a farm and followed that occupation until about 20 years ago when he moved to this city. He was an ardent sportsman, his favorite diversions being hunting and fishing. He was a noted and expert trap shot and was a familiar figure at most tournaments held in this country some 20 years ago. He was active also in the civic and business life of the community, being one of the incorporators of the Mt. Pulaski farmers' Grain and Elevator Co. in 1903, being a member of the board of directors almost continuously until the present time. He was also one of the incorporators of the Mt. Pulaski Independent Telephone Co., which was later absorbed by the present company. He was active in many other enterprises and served the township on the board of Logan County supervisors from 1902 to 1904, being a member of the courthouse building committee which had charge of bids and plans of the present courthouse. He was a charter member of Lincoln Lodge of Elks No. 914.

John C. "Deacon" England was born in the southern part of the township and would have reached the age of 73 years on April 3, 1930. He was a son of Elder John England, a pioneer preacher of this section, who organized the Copeland Christian Church in 1866 and dedicated the church the following year. Decedent was twice married, his first marriage to Miss Mary Francis Buckles, daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth Buckles, occurred about 48 years ago. She died in 1897. They were the parents of two daughters and one son, one daughter dying in infancy and one son, Forest, dying a few years ago. The other daughter is the daughter of Hubert Zimmerli of Mt. Pulaski. His second marriage, to Mrs. Tillie Horn Weller, occurred about 29 years ago. Two sons were born to this union, Harold and John, both in Chicago. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, two sons, and five grandchildren.

The body is expected to arrive in Mt. Pulaski some time on Tuesday, when funeral arrangements will be completed.

He was buried at Steenbergen Cemetery, Mount Pulaski, Logan County, Illinois.

John Edward England, of Chicago, who had been in Mount Pulaski for several weeks, staying with his mother, Mrs. Tillie England, and receiving medical care, was removed to the Deaconess Hospital, Lincoln, Wednesday, July 4, in the Schahl ambulance. He died there at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, July 8, 1951, aged 41 years, 1 month, and 26 days. He had been in failing health for many months.

Mr. England was born May 12, 1910 in Mount Pulaski, Ill., a son of John and Tillie Horn England. He attended the Mount Pulaski schools. In Bowling Green, Ky., 12 years ago, he married Miss Emogene Combs of Mount Pulaski. They lived in this city for two years and then located in Chicago.

Decedent is survived by his wife; his mother, Mrs. Tillie England, Mount Pulaski; and a half-sister, Mrs. Hubert Zimmerli of San Pablo, Calif.

The remains were removed to the Schahl Funeral Home, Mount Pulaski, where funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9, by Rev. Ray O. Zumstein, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church. Two hymns, "Heaven is My Home" and "Asleep in Jesus", were sung by Paul R. Moore, with piano accompaniment by Mrs. J. H. Stuart.

Burial was in the Mount Pulaski cemetery. Pallbearers were Edward Gulso, Frank E. Turley, Delbert Horn, Ennis Downing, Roman Romer, and Howard Horn.

He was buried at Mount Pulaski Cemetery, Mount Pulaski, Logan County, Illinois.
