Flora Bele Gulley was born on 5. Oct. 1867 at LeRoy, McLean County, Illinois. She was the daughter of
G. William Gulley and
Sarah A. Land. Flora Bele Gulley married
William Franklin Buckles, son of
Robert Franklin Buckles and
Harriet Eliza Howard, on 23. Dec. 1890 at LeRoy, McLean County, Illinois. Flora Bele Gulley died on 8. Jun. 1949 at Knoxville, Marion County, Iowa, at age 81.
Flora Belle Gulley was born at Leroy, Ill., October 5, 1867, and spent her young life there until 1890. At the age of 23 years she was united in marriage to William F. Buckles, December 23, 1890, and came with her husband to Iowa in 1891 where they resided on the Covey farm south of Knoxville for six years.
To this union there were born three children Mrs. Grace B. Wake, of Memphis, Tenn., Roy Edgar Buckles and Lloyd (Bud) Buckles, of Burlington. Mrs Buckles also raised and cared for three children of her sister, Fred, Lizzie, and Zella Busaid. Zella remained at home as a member of the family until her death in 1938. At that time Mrs Buckles took the infant son and tenderly cared for him until his adoption by Martin and Bernice Manafield in 1946.
The Buckles have been prominent in Knoxville business circles, spending approximately twenty years in the restaurant business. They were proprietors of the Parson House hotel which burned out in 1923. The then purchased the Elliott home on Montgomery street, living there for twenty three years, where they served meals and catered to parties and other gatherings.
In 1937, Mr. Buckles died, at which time Mrs. Buckles sold her big house and retired to a smaller place.
Mrs. Buckles was a member of the Christian church and Rebekah Lodge No. 70. During the past six months, Mrs. Buckles health failed rapidly. During this last illness all that tender and loving hands could do was done for her, She died June 8, 1949, after attaining nearly 82 years. Preceding her in death were her husband, William F. Buckles, one son, Roy and a niece, Mrs Zella Mae Moore. Surviving are the daughter Grace, and son Bud, seven grand-children and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, from the Bybee & Davis funeral home, conducted by Ray E. O. Barrow. Interment was made in the Graceland cemetery.
