SUNDAY MORNING TRAGEDY ON TROLLEY LINE AT HERKIMER

--------------------

Albert Conover Killed by Car For Which He Was Waiting at Protection

Avenue When He Attempts to Cross Tracks in Front of it.

---------------------

Albert Conover of Ilion was the victim of a trolley line tragedy which occurred at Protection Avenue in this village at about 1:30 Sunday morning. Struck by the car for which he had been waiting. His death was instantaneous. It appears that Mr. Conover had been standing on the wrong side of the track while waiting, and upon noting the approach of the car undertook to cross ahead of it so as to be ready to get on board. He evidently miscalculated its distance and speed when he stepped on the track, and was hit before he could reach safety. It was a westbound car on which he had intended going home. An immediate stop was made and Coroner James W. Graves was summoned. The dead was found to be badly crushed about the head sustaining no other injuries. Letters found in his pocket were the means of identification. Deceased was 52 years of age and leaves his wife, three small children, Rachel, Charles and Russell: his mother, Mrs. Emeline Conover of Howe's Cave; one brother Charles Conover of Detroit, Michigan; four sisters, Mrs. Minnie Heinig of Herkimer, Mrs. George Nagle, Mrs. Ada Pratt, both of Albany, Mrs. Ida Nethaway of Howe's Cave, Mrs. Frank Heinig of Russia, and three children by a first wife, Leon Conover, Mrs. Robert Van Nort of Ilion and Mrs. Charles Cross of Herkimer.

The funeral will be held from the home of Mrs. Garrison Smith, 209 South Bellinger Street, Wednesday with Rev. W. M. Thompson of the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be made in Oak Hill Cemetery.

(Note: Albert's obituary says he was survived by four sisters and then it goes on to name 5 names.)
