Garrett Conover was born on 3 February 1817 at Hightstown, Mercer County, New Jersey. He was the son of
John P. Conover and
Lydia Duncan. Garrett Conover was baptized on 10 May 1817 at First Presbyterian Church, Cranbury, Middlesex County, New Jersey. At the age of 12 he came to New Brunswick and was apprenticed to learn the tailor's trade with William Owen, and at that youthful age started out in life for himself, and since this beginning in 1829 he has been continuously identified with the clothing trade in New Brunswick. In 1829. He finished learning his rade with John Stryker, who left the place in 1835 in 1835. He was he started business as a merchant tailor and established himself on Commerce Square, where, after he had been in business for about one year, his goods were destroyed by fire, leaving him in debt. The donfidence of New York merchants from whom he purchased his goods in his integrity and honesty of purpose enabled him at once to start again, and form that time his trade rapidly increased until in 1851 he added to his business the manufacturer and sale of clothing, which he has carried on successfully since.
